Two steps forward, one step back. This was one of those weeks in the life of a local elected official. We got to celebrate Pride Month with a great story hour at the Bedford Gallery which was a chance to celebrate our shared humanity and help the kids with the idea that despite our differences, love is always stronger than hate. We talked to talented architects who are ready to help us build the new pool and community center at Heather Farm. We are going to build a place for everyone from the 5 year olds who finally learn how to put their face in the water all the way to the Masters swimmers who glide through the water effortlessly. We issued proclamations celebrating Juneteenth and recognizing our African American residents and all they bring to the city. We are working on a city budget that helps keep all of us safe through a data driven crime prevention program, extra officers on the beat, innovative mental health response programs, and so much more. And then there we were at the council meeting Tuesday night…four callers in public comment who have gone down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole and come out the other side full of some truly horrifying anti semitic hate. I value the First Amendment and everyone has a right to speak their mind in a public meeting, as long as they follow the rules. But it was so sad to realize these callers hadn’t been able to grasp the simple idea that the kids who gathered to celebrate at drag queen story hour had learned. Love is stronger than hate.

Walnut Creek Downtown did a great job organizing Uncorked last night. And the boys were particularly pleased to find great beer on the menu along with all the great wine.

It was a spectacular day up on Shell Ridge. Flowers in bloom. No pesky rain. And recognition of our beloved oaks as an old growth forest.

The Sunday Walnut Creek Farmers' Market will be open this morning in spite of the sprinkles and as an added bonus I will be in the City Council booth so swing on by to say hi and see what’s going on in our city.

Your will be Open tomorrow. Why is your market open in the rain? Many farmers’ markets are open rain ☔️ or shine ☀️ Why would we be open when surely we are in for a soaking? Doing so keeps our vital local food system moving. These days we are all feeling the effects of supply chain difficulties resulting from the the Covid stoppage. Fortunately farmers’ markets were deemed essential when many other businesses slowed or stopped production. Staying open kept farmers farming and locally produced nutritious food plentiful. Even one missed market day, like a rain day, results in big losses for small farms. Dedicated to bring you fresh picked produce, anything not sold must be donated or turned into compost. So grab you umbrella ☔️ and break out those cute rainboots and join us, free puddles for splashing in available.

Next time you are on a Target run, check out our city’s latest mural. It was designed to reflect the life experiences of youth at Trinity Center who are aging out of foster care and learning to make their way in the world. Some of them came to share their stories and their resilience is awe inspiring. We are lucky to have Trinity Center in our city.

Editorial: For Walnut Creek council, Francois and Silva far superior 29/10/2022

A thoughtful editorial today about the Walnut Creek City Council. The East Bay Times summed up our commitment to sound fiscal policy “The city has been exceptionally well-managed financially. Council members are mindful of keeping spending in check, the need for saving money to upgrade aging facilities and paying down retirement-debt obligations. They’re ahead of most cities in the state in covering their public employee pension liabilities.” I’m proud to serve on a council that takes financial health seriously.

Editorial: For Walnut Creek council, Francois and Silva far superior With city well-run, both deserve reelection in race against challengers who lack knowledge of important issues.

One of my absolute favorite parts of city council is working with our Youth Commission. Tonight they brought us a proposal they’d worked on for more than a year to have a youth representative on three city commissions. I was proud to support the proposal and look forward to bringing young voices into the discussion of our city’s future.

I am proud of our Youth Commissioners who are helping to register new voters at Moraga Commons this morning. With great people like this, our future is bright here in Walnut Creek.

Have questions, thoughts, comments about our city? Or do you just need fresh spring veggies? I’ll be at the downtown farmer’s market this Sunday from nine to noon. Stop by and say hi!

20/02/2022

Last night I did a ride along with Walnut Creek Police Department to see what happens in our city after my usual bed time. The results? Downtown nightlife was hopping but felt safe with several officers patrolling. A couple service calls to deal with noise and alarms. And one more serious call where officers were able to head off the potential for criminal activity. I was glad to see an emphasis on equitable community policing and service. It’s important to have a city that feels safe for everyone who lives, works, and plays here.
