Fresh-cut, locally-grown seasonal flowers grown on a quaint, well-loved plot in Michigan zone 5 π±
And just like that, Summer seems real, and bouquets are on a regular schedule.
Man, it seems sooo late in the season to be making bouquets. Almost like Summer is over. That's what I get for an insanely busy Spring π₯΄ I keep telling myself that it's still somewhat early-mid Summer, and the garden still has time to grow (as I look at the dahlia garden and wonder why it looks so behind).
Whether it's late in the season, or rather early, I am pretty excited to be back in the swing of subscriptions ππ₯°
Let's pause a moment and just stare at this pretty bunch of flowers π
πΈ I've fit more Dahlias in this space this year, than any other year before.
How many? About 1,200. Now quite a few tubers have rotted due to a variety of reasons.... But I am not worried -- the overflow garden has 300-500 dahlias, and will surely make up for anything lost in the main dahlia garden.
Yesterday was spent staking and netting all the garden rows. I'm not a huge fan of netting with Dahlias, but I ran out of my string, so no corralling this year... Just netting. Even if I'm not a fan of netting for Dahlias, the LOOK of the Dahlia garden when it's all set up, is just amazing π I love how efficient and productive it looks π€
β¨ Key piece of information: I am growing Dahlias pretty untraditionally. Lots of Dahlia growers will have strict guidelines for care and planting, which is fine - but I need a LOT of flowers, and I have such limited space. I planted my dahlias 3-tubers wide in a row. A 3' wide row gave me 3 30-foot rows within one main row, therefore allowing me to plant 90 tubers to a row.... At 12" spacing. It works for me, and I go with it. The key to gardening is finding what works for you, and stepping confidently in that direction until you can dance through it with ease. And this year, I'm learning a whole new, intense, dance routine π
So enjoy this pretty photo. At least I think it's gorgeous π π±
Have a wonderful day, friends!

Let's take a moment and talk about flower preservation.... Aka vase life.
I haven't spoken much on this, because honestly, by the time I had a chance to sit down and say something about it, the cut flower season was over.
β¨ππΌ But not this year! ππΌβ¨
As the flower subscriptions take off in the next few weeks, and you wonderful people buy bouquets from me this season .... Here are a few key things to remember to help your flowers stay fresh as long as possible :
π Trim stems at an angle daily - this allows the flowers to have a fresh surface to drink in water.
π Fresh.water.every.day! Rinse out the vase and fill it with fresh, cold water so your flowers can be refreshed to live a bit longer.
π Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight! I know it may seem like it'd be helpful... Sunlight is helpful when the flowers are growing in the garden, but an early death for cut flowers. So keep the flowers out of direct sunlight, and in a nice cool area.
π I've heard people keep their flowers in a fridge overnight, but who has that fridge space to spare?
π Pick off any spent flower heads so that energy is wasted in trying to resurrect a dead bloom - the other flowers and blooms can use that energy.
π Flower deliveries can get pretty warm... If you plan on flowers delivered to your house, and you won't be home, please set out a vase/jar of fresh water, or let me know if you won't be able to directly receive the bouquet - that way I can leave the flowers with some water in a jar.
β¨π» Understanding that different flowers have different vase lives, is crucial. I try my best to grow things with a long vase life, as well as cut at the right time/stage for a longer vase life... So some flowers may have 3 days, while others may have 3-6 days. It varies, but regardless, I try my best to produce a product that will last as long as possible.... But a long vase life isn't merely a result of the farmer-florist, it's also what YOU do to keep the flowers in an environment to thrive in the vase.
Anything to add? Feel free!
Happy flower season... And have a wonderful day!

This row is so pretty to me. Of course, the photo doesn't accurately display that.
I'll be honest... If there is one thing that I just have not been able to get into the groove of, it's sunflower successions. I made a note on my 2024 calendar every month : "MASTER SUCCESSIONS".
Did I? You'd think. But there hasn't been a year so awful for growing sunflowers than this year. This is specific to me. I'm not even going to post a photo of the earlier sown sunflowers. Laughable and depressing.
This time last year, I was about to cut the first sunflowers for my subscriptions. This year, it's looking like I'll cut the first sunflowers the end of August.
I always thought as though sunflowers were a late-Summer flower. This year, I have no other choice than to believe that they really are a late-Summer flower π»
I've been planting sunflower seeds everywhere. A last ditch effort to get those bright, cheery blooms, no matter the season. Even if it's late Summer.
So what you see in this photo, is a chunk of happy little sunflower seedlings.
I'm learning (and it seems like I am always relearning this ...) that just because it doesn't bloom when I expected it to bloom, doesn't mean that the timeframe God has in mind, won't be even better. Sunflowers this season are proof that no matter how hard I try to master something, the Master Gardener always has a way to teach me something even better π»β¨
Have a wonderful day, friends!

I've been thinking...
Do you know what makes growing and arranging flowers amazing? πΈππΌ There are no set rules or formulas to apply in order to produce something lovely.
There are styles, preferences and inclinations that are specific to each individual.
β¨ I l o v e how unique this is. One florist may arrange in a more formal way, while another may embrace the wildflower-esque vibe β¨
When it comes to the "farmer"-florist - the ones that grow, arrange and sell their own products - it becomes a league all its own. Brides, event coordinators, customers and flower-enthusiasts seek out those with styles similar to their preferences.
So when someone chooses us to work with, to provide flowers for their special moments, it's a great blessing to know that we can offer something that's their cup-of-tea.
When I grow flowers, I truly love the look of it all.
When I truly love what I grow, it makes the next step - meeting fellow flower fanatics - even better. Why? Because people come to me when they share the love for the style offered. It's not about being the best florist or grower around ... It's about finding the people that get those same sparkling feelings when they see our style of flowers.
This season finds me in the "I didn't plan on it happening this way... But it's still gorgeous" phase.
Let's be honest. We have our favourite coffee shops, our favourite colours, our favourite pizza shops (maybe just me....) and so many other favourites. Not because it's random, but because it makes us, us. It's no surprise that we have our own styles and therefore our own way of doing things.
π₯πΌβ¨ So this is for all you fellow flower friends that love the wild, whimsical, wildflower, gardens-in-a-sleeve. Thank you sooo very much for being my peeps and loving all the styles and "vibes" that this season brings.
You're the best π

I know there will always be w**ds.
But this year is different. I swear I just planted everything... I thought I just w**ded that row?
I'm half tempted to just let nature take its course and grow alongside all the flowers. Buuuuut the wimpy Lisianthus is proof that the w**ds are like a toxic friend that you think is supporting you, but when taken away, you realise that they were sucking the life out of you ( ). So the w**ds definitely have to go. Thankfully the Lord sent rain and softened the soil, and the w**ds pull up like a dream. So do the plants, if I'm not careful.
β¨ That's your Kairos Flowers update for Monday, June 24th β¨
Now I'm off to the garden where the sun is shining, the wrens are singing, the flowers are growing, and Italian music is the happy soundtrack. It's always a good day here.
ππ¦Esther
It's been rather slow here. The garden is growing lots of beautiful w**ds, and sending up a few pretty flowers.
πΈ Stock is blooming, and I may put together a few bouquets. Maybe, maybe not.
Yesterday's rain was wonderful. Puddles in the garden, and raindrops off the leaves.
Oh, and the garden got a bit of an upgrade. Black garden "fabric" down the walk ways, because I made the rows wider and the walkways smaller.... A lawnmower wouldn't fit down the walkways, and I sure and heck don't want to be pulling w**ds out of compact soil. And it looks super professional π
That's the update for now.
Have a wonderful day, friends!

But Julia is remembered today. Beyond words, beyond anything. She is remembered on this day, as a year ago she opened her beautiful eyes to see the Promised Land we, earth side, only dream and hope for πβ¨
This would have been her 20th year on earth. In her honour and sweet remembrance, I am gifting 2 Summer Flower Subscriptions to represent her 2 decades.

This isn't a competition, rather a giveaway.

I do not have flowers at this point in the season. If you need flowers, I β¨highlyβ¨ recommend checking out Browerβs Flowers in Rockford. It is well worth the drive - her place is beautifully picturesque.
Lots of beautiful flowers on her stand.... Check it out!
Thank you for all of the love at the stand yesterday. I do a lot of my work at night which means I get to be home with my kids during the day, work when they go to bed, and know that our little farm stand is literally helping to support our family.
I just restocked lots of beautiful bouquets on the stand this morning and there are plenty up in the barn cooler to restock if needed!

πβ¨ Oh sweet Summertime β¨π
Honestly, I forget making these sorts of bouquets when the in-between seasons last long. But then photos remind me that everything coming up from the earth right now, is preparing to sing in beauty later this Summer π
πΈColours and smells, petals and stems, there are so many things that make these Summer Bouquets phenomenal. These are the bouquets that are meant to define the very essence of Summer.... The season we wait for allllll winter long.
Let me tell you a few things about the Summer Subscription here at Kairos Flowers:
π»β¨ With the Summer Subscription, you get 6 consecutive weeks full of locally-grown, sun-kissed blooms to bring joy and Summer beauty to your home. This begins mid-July and goes through August.
π»β¨ No bouquet is the same. Each week brings at least one new thing into bloom - We try to fully grasp the tended and untended natural beauty of everything in season around us. You may notice a few sprigs of mint one week, and goldenrod the next. Foraging wild beauty gives our bouquets that super-full, meadow-like, cottage-core β¨ vibe β¨ to accompany the sophisticated flowers such as sunflowers and dahlias.
π»β¨ Our bouquets are b i g. Not just visibly large, but pretty hefty as well. I'm a big proponent of giving others what I would want to be given to me. If it's not your money's worth in sight and quality, why should I feel comfortable selling that?
π»β¨ You can choose to pick up locally, or have fresh flowers delivered to your door each week -- easy and beautiful!
π»β¨ If you are a part of our subscription and are unable to pick up or receive a delivery one week, we absolutely love being able to offer bouquet credits for future flowers, or gifting your bouquet to brighten someone's day!

Second-year Feverfew π₯°
These were direct-seeded last Spring, and the first growth was pretty sad, and barely long enough for a bouquet.
It was such a blessing for these plants to come back and grow into monster plants with beautiful, dainty flowers.
I had a surgery over the weekend, and my Mom has enjoyed having me do absolutely nothing. Which is really difficult for me to just sit still and recover. She put a lawn chair in the garden, made me sit down, and watch her harvest all the Feverfew. Oh well. It's done, and the flowers are cut, so I can't complain π
We are in the awkward in-between season, where nothing of major value is growing or in bloom in my garden. There are, of course, flowers I could be growing, but chose not to, until I have time and energy for them in the future.
But straight up Feverfew is just as good as any bouquet, and my Mom and I actually have grown to prefer straight - up bunches of one variety of anything. It's beautiful, fresh and whimsical. Just a beautiful beautiful bunch of flowers.
Whether my Mom agrees or not, I will be putting together nice bunches of Feverfew. These will be available tomorrow, $10/each π
For now, I'm just going to enjoy this absolutely gorgeous weather, and enjoy having everything squared away β¨
Have a wonderful day, friends!

This Spring, in every sense, has been the furthest from predictable.
We began with a beautiful bounty of Tulips in April, and last evening we closed out the Spring Season Subscriptions with lovely mixed Peony bouquets πΈ
It was so wonderful to gather all the components to make these bouquets. It was like a bridal bouquet met a wildflower meadow πβ¨
I thoroughly enjoyed the Spring Subscriptions this year, and hope that my wonderful subscribers enjoyed it as well π€
β¨There are a few things that I will be changing next year, but for now, I am eager to break away for a bit and rest until the next subscription opens, and the real flowers steal the show (Dahlias, Sunflowers, Lisianthus.... π) If you need some flowers to perfect your Summer, you can still snag a Summer Subscription here : https://kairos-flowers-llc.myshopify.com
I just want to thank everyone for all your support, encouragement and business so far this season. It is phenomenal how many people show up, and how many loyal customers come back regularly π Such an incredible blessing.

Now that is one huge task checked off my list β
Our rototiller broke and was laid to rest a few weeks ago. Right when I needed to get the dahlia beds tilled.
So, it has been quite a manual ordeal.
π Last Fall I rototilled the dahlia rows, added fallen leaves and manure ... This really helped lighten up the soil, so that it wasn't ridiculously compact. I redesigned the dahlia garden to fit more tubers in ( in all honesty, I don't know if I actually fit more tubers in, or just liked the layout because it looks like an English Garden labyrinth ), and by doing this, I had even more work to do.
π± Last week (or two weeks ago?) I dug the trenches as deep as I could, so that the tubers were 6-8" deep. After this was done, I decided to dig out the pathways to create mounded rows for the dahlias. This added the manure and compost that was in the rows, into the beds, so that there was more depth, and more nutrients for the tubers to work with.
It may seem like a rather odd and frivolous accomplishment, but I am just so satisfied that it's done. Especially considering this garden was all finished without machinery of any sort (not talking about rototilling in the beginning, okay? π), I'd say I can confidently move on to the next task at hand.
We expect nature to be flawless when we cut and arrange it in a vase. If it looks too busy, we tend to rearrange things so that everything flows.
Yet when everything is in season, the Pennycress, Sage, Spirea, Peonies and Chamomile come together in a beautiful harmony that can't be picked apart.
After all, what is so effortlessly beautiful about nature, is how everything comes up in chaos... But despite every contrasting texture and colour, everything flows in the most astounding way.
It amuses me how peaceful and stress-less life become when I accept each individual sprig of season and circumstance, as a part of something that will become exactly what the Master Gardener intended to be full and beautiful π
I encourage you all to find something heavenly in the ordinary today, whatever your schedule/day throws at you... There is something perfectly beautiful.
Have a beautiful day, friends!
ππ¦ Esther
Before I wrapped this bouquet, I had to take a moment to just stare at it.
It's beautiful. Not in a, pat-myself-on-the-back sort of way. But in a, "so much has gone into this beauty" sort of way.
Peonies are not a flower that you plant in the Fall, and harvest in the Spring, like Tulips. Not at all. You plant a Peony root in the Fall, and it will be 3-5 years before you are harvesting those huge, heavenly aromatic blooms.
β¨πΈ Peonies are proof that patience is beautiful.
It may seem a bit contradictory to admit this, but I enjoy flowers best when someone else has grown them. Because I know the work, the stress, the care and the time that goes into growing something, I over-appreciate the truth that someone else has traveled the path of growth to produce the blooms I enjoy. I am a bit of a fan-girl over Farmhouse Gardens peonies.... Which are the star in this lovely bouquet.
Spring Subscriptions may be ending early, but not without a proper send off. Big, beautiful and elegant peonies that hold so much more behind them than just beauty ππΈβ¨

If you are anything like me, you will grieve yourself by everything you see. Why? Because there is always something that used to be, that is no longer.
Yesterday was full of this sensation, but thankfully, the joy in the moment trumped the nostalgia.
I had mixed Lupine, Yarrow, Delphinium and Foxglove started from seed this Spring, and decided not to sell any of it, so that it could get established in the garden first. I intended to plant it in my part of the garden, but I ran out of space. My Mom had wanted Lupine for a long time, so she was more than willing to plant the extras in her garden.
I grew up in this garden. I remember a bracket in my life where I never really spent any time in the garden, because that was my Mom's business, nothing for me to do there. I remember she 'hired" me to w**d a patch, and I got fired because I hated everything about the garden.
I was younger, and everything was how it had been as I grew up.
But lately, I have found that as I am in the garden, my Mom and my family, is off working their own businesses and occupied with their life around the house as well. I enjoy being alone, and the garden is the perfect place for that.
But every now and then I miss being young, walking across the wooden bridge over the creek, and seeing my siblings under the age of 10 working in the garden. It's a strange feeling to know that chapter is over. My siblings are older and not bound to help at home and in the garden. Every now and then I wish I could go back in time and take my love for the garden with me, so that I could knock out some plant transplanting with my Mom, and be a shovel and pot carrying assistant like my siblings were to my Mom.
But yesterday was good. Planting hundreds of Lupine, Yarrow and Delphinium with my Mom was a little like how it used to be. No rush to finish and go to the next thing. Just a beautiful day, crooked lines, and double-plug planting. The way I remember the garden.
I wish I could return to life how it used to be, when everything seemed whole... But today is the day the Lord has given us, and I am so thankful to have moments where things have the sweet essence of former normalcy π
This is the first year in my 5 short years growing dahlias, that I have not stressed out about the process.
Typically, I am meticulous about mapping the dahlia garden, and making sure every variety is tagged and written out on a paper map. Not this year. I mean, I put tags in the garden where the different varieties are, but in reality, I know I have, and can identify when they bloom.
I quickly ran out of space in my main dahlia garden, even though I "redesigned" it to accommodate more tubers. I am not entirely sure how many tubers I am actually growing... Usually I'd be able to account for everything and tell you how many of each plant I actually am growing.
Not this year. I anticipate this to be a beautiful year. A season full of beautiful gardens and a full property. How can I anticipate this? Because I ran out of space, and I am planting things everywhere.
πΈ This Spring I have been ultra sensitive to every minute detail that goes into literally everything. I've had to ask for more help from my family, when time just wasn't on my side. I am so thankful for my family, and the aid and availability we are able to lend each other. From my Dad rototilling and coming up with easier ways to plant, my Mom and sister helping get things in the ground, my younger brother watering flats, to my brothers digging trenches for my dahlias and being there to lend a hand now and then. I am thankful for a family that operates in a multifunctional way, where we all are there for one another when our individual businesses need some extra help. I'm not biased when I stand back and look at our family and say we are quite the powerhouse family πͺπΌ
