🌶️ Poblano Peppers: From Fresh to Fabulous! 🌶️✨
This season, we have discovered the versatility of poblano peppers! These rich, mildly spicy peppers are perfect for adding depth and flavor to your dishes. Here’s how you can make the most of them:
⭐️Poblano Peppers are yum because:
Flavorful Kick: Poblano peppers have a mild heat with a hint of smokiness, making them ideal for enriching enchilada sauce and other Mexican favorites. 🌮🔥
Versatile Uses: Besides enchilada sauce, try them roasted, stuffed, or blended into salsas and soups. Their deep flavor profile adds a delicious twist to any recipe! 🍲
⭐️DIY Enchilada Sauce:
Roast and Blend: Roast poblano peppers until the skin is charred, then peel and blend with tomatoes, garlic, onions, and spices for a homemade enchilada sauce that’s rich and flavorful. 🌶️🍅
Cook and Serve: Simmer your sauce to develop the flavors and use it to smother enchiladas or as a zesty topping for your favorite dishes.
⭐️Air Drying Poblano Peppers:
Hang and Dry: For a unique, smoky flavor, air-dry your poblanos! Simply hang them up in a cool, dry place and let them dry out completely. 🌿🍂
Preserve and Enjoy: Once dried, you can crush them into a powder for seasoning or use them in soups and stews for a rich, smoky flavor that lasts!

🌶️ Fresh Salsa Magic in Your Kitchen! 🥑🍅
Craving a burst of flavor? It’s time to whip up some homemade salsa! 🥳🌟 Here’s how you can bring the fiesta to your kitchen with just a few fresh ingredients:
Ingredients:
Ripe tomatoes 🍅
Crisp [green] bell peppers (and jalapenos if you'd like some spice) 🌶️
Zesty onions 🧅
Fresh cilantro 🌿
A splash of lime juice 🍋
A pinch of salt and pepper 🧂
Instructions:
1. Chop It Up: Dice tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions to your preferred size.
2. Mix and Mingle: Toss them together in a bowl with chopped cilantro. We like to use a food processor for a finer salsa. If you want to use a blender/ food processor, place herbs/ veggies on the bottom and tomatoes on the top.
3. Add Zest: Squeeze in some lime juice and season with salt and pepper.
4. Stir and Serve: Mix well and let the flavors meld. Serve with your favorite chips or as a topping for tacos!
Why We Love Salsa:
😋Fresh and Flavorful: A perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and tangy!
😋Customizable: Adjust the heat and flavors to suit your taste buds. 🔥
😋Healthy and Delicious: Packed with veggies and great for snacking!
😋Get Creative: Share your salsa creations with us! Tag us with and show us your unique twists on this classic favorite. 📸🎉

After big storms, we tend to have flowers break-- good way to repurpose them by bringing some natural beauty inside.
What is your favorite flower blooming right now?
Bumble bees snacking on some pollen from Hyssop.
Reminds me of eating corn on the cob-- do you eat left to right, like a typewriter, or all the way around? 😅 Seems like bumblees are "all the way around" type-ha.
The girls are having a party on the Rocky Mountain bee plant!
Also if you look closely on the plant’s anthers you can see tiny wild bees joining the pollen fiesta as well 😃
Happy 🐝 today!!!
I know, I know... it's too early to be thinking about Christmas!! Thanksgiving comes first. BUT I must say this is my favorite time of the year to do gift shopping because it is so chill, no pressure, and nothing beats local gifts :) Come on out! Plus, they are going to have hot cocoa. Yummm 🙃

Claytonia perfoliata, also known as miner's lettuce, is one of my favorite native AND edible plants. The leaves are super delicious in salads and the little flowers are just so cool, coming out of the middle of the leaf!
Glandularia canadensis, or rose verbena, is just lighting up our landscape right now and we LOVE it!
It prefers full sun and can withstand drought.
Kind of reminds me of the flower cartoon drawings in Spongebob, right? 😅
Heh. 😬Happy Monday!
Winecap mushrooms poking out of the mulch. Yum!

Planted a couple hundred trees yesterday... including this cute Juneberry. First time using a dibble... game changer!!! Cut planting time in half! Thanks and for selling amazing native plants!!!
If you are looking for native plants to put in your lawn/garden, this is a great place to check-out! You can also visit them in person on May 8th, starting at 10am
Installed a nursery bat house for some friends. They’ve been awesome 🦇 advocates, and the whole block pulls out their lawn chairs to watch the bats leave the nest each night 😃
They actually originally installed a bat house four years ago because bats were nesting in attics in the neighborhood. So we installed our first bat house we ever built, so when the bats were removed they had a place to move into that was all their own 🥰 people and bats now living in harmony...
Other fun fact— they use the guano that drops from the nest on their plants and it acts like a super fertilizer!! Don’t ya just love💚💙the circle of life?
Guilty...
HAPPY AND HEALTHY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!

Who is SO excited for their plants popping up? We have so many native forbs waking up from last year... and I’m experimenting with integrating annual 🥬 greens into the mix since cool season plants can be put in the ground now and I JUST CANT WAIT!!! 😋
Share your plant pics!!! We’d love to see what is coming up by you.
Saw our first bumble bee of the season 💙💚🐝 these bigger gals are actually queen bees coming out of hibernation from the winter 🤯 they are SO important because the spring queens start a whole new colony every year so make sure to plant plenty of spring forage to strengthen these gals!
👏📣Shout-Out Saturday📣👏
Who is ready to put some *native* plants in the ground, but are not sure where to get them?? 🙋♀️🙋
We just toured and could not WAIT to share what this amazing group of people are doing! This crew of a few are absolutely crushing the native plant game and starting May 8th, will have doors open for business.
We really appreciate this business because for SOME reason, native plants can be super hard to find in commercial stores...yet are ESSENTIAL to ecosystem balance and (and other things too of course!)🦇🦋🐛
And here they are, growing tons of baby native plants just for you! Definitely check them out. They are even getting their native plants into other stores in Omaha which we are PUMPED to hear.
Help spread the love by spreading the native plants! 💚💙🌱
You can even pre-purchase online and pickup!

👏📣Shout-Out Saturday!📣👏
We just LOVE sharing the incredibly thoughtful and eco-friendly work people are doing in the community!
The group does so much for and recently they started growing produce to donate.
We recently partnered with CSS to build greenhouse tables & start greens for the local community. Look at those seedlings grow!
Healthy food leads to healthy people and healthy communities, so thank you for all you do!
We also had a great time integrating some Miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) from which can also be foraged in the wild as an edible green. Yum!

There is a heated debate here in the Vertakking household🤣... so we need to know, what is YOUR perfect banana?
We know you have started seeing green in your landscapes! So we are starting a 🌱"What's this plant?" 🌱series. If you have a photo of something and want to know what it is, feel free to post it and we will help :D
This here is rose verbena (Glandularia canadensis). It will bloom into a beautiful purple flowering plant that's native to our state.
What you are seeing here in the top video is the reason we encourage people to NOT pick up their leaves, and not chop down everything in their garden in the fall. The bottom image is also rose verbena, but the difference is it was not covered with leaves over the winter. Leaving your leaves can make the difference between life and death!
1) 🍃The leaves & expired plant material provide shelter for animals throughout the winter. Remember how COLD it was? Yeah!! Gotta keep those leaf-blankets out for the hibernating bumble bees and critters.
2) 🍂The leaf debris acts as insulation for plants as well! They will keep more sensitive species from being frozen and dried out during the cold winter winds. These leaves also retain more moisture for plants that grow near the ground.
