We are delighted to announce that North and Standard Club have now received all the required formal approvals to finalise their merger and establish NorthStandard on 20 February 2023.
Upon launch, NorthStandard will immediately become one of the largest providers of mutual cover in the maritime industries, with over 300 years of combined P&I heritage and consolidated annual premiums of approximately US$750 million. The combined club will be led by Jeremy Grose, Standard Club's CEO, and Paul Jennings CEO at North.

From 8 January 2023, China has downgraded the designation and management of COVID-19 from a Class A infectious disease to Class B. This has resulted in changes to the prevention and restriction policies on port entry formalities, crew changes and onboard surveys at the country’s ports. Standard Club wishes that everyone enjoys the Lunar New Year celebrations
Members with ships calling at Israeli ports are advised that from 23 February 2023 a sulphur cap of 0.10% m/m will be imposed while the vessels are at-berth or in designated anchorages. This requirement is being announced on the back of the recent designation of the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area. Read more here:
Members with ships calling at Chinese ports are advised that from 22 December 2022 there is a requirement to record energy consumption data in accordance with the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). This new regulation will be valid for 5 years.

Members with ships carrying solid bulk cargoes are reminded that IMO Resolution MSC.500(105) – Amendments (06-21) to the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code will enter into force on 1 December 2023. However, some contracting governments may apply these amendments in whole or in part on a voluntary basis from 1 January 2023. The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) ‘at berth’ regulations were first introduced in 2007 and required for a percentage of vessels to utilize shore power whilst in port, based on the type of vessel and the frequency of port calls.

On 23 December 2022, the United States Coast Guard issued a final rule in the Federal Register to adjust the limits of liability under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) to reflect the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) since the limits were last adjusted in 2019. The coast guard is required by statute to adjust the limits of OPA 90 not less than every three years to account for increases in the CPI. The intent of the adjustments is to prevent the statutory limits of liability from depreciating due to inflation. On 16 December 2022, the EU adopted the 9th package of Russian sanctions. A number of Regulations and Decisions were published but of particular significance for members is Council Regulation (EU) 2022/2474 which further amends Regulation (EU) 833/2014 (the Regulation).
