My name is Katie Lombardo and I am a private tutor in the Fort Polk/ Leesville area. I tutor students of all ages in all subjects, specializing in math.
To start off, I'll give you a little background on me. I have always loved to learn. In school I enjoyed every subject, excelling in most areas, especially mathematics. Fellow students often came to me for help if they were struggling with a problem or having a hard time understanding a concept. It was this experience of often being sought out as a mentor through school that made me pursue tutorin
g. I have experience working at a math-only tutoring center called Mathnasium. There I helped up to five students at a time with their homework, preparing for tests, or learning new material. We had students of all ages, which meant every math problem imaginable. Which also meant most students came from various schools and had different math teachers, which could be the hardest challenge. Students learn differently and once in a while teachers teaching style and students learning style do not match up. As a tutor I identify what teaching method is going to work best for your student, relaying concepts in a way they will understand. Once they understand how and why a problem gets a particular answer it is easy to reverse engineer and understand the method their teacher is using in class. My time at Mathnasium gave me very valuable skills that I have since applied in private tutoring. I do have experience as a private tutor, covering all subjects. Working with a student in all subjects is an excellent opportunity to teach them skills that will help them all throughout life. Such as time management, organization, prioritizing, stress management, test taking skills, study skills, and confidence. While tutoring your student, I remind them that what they are learning is important by taking their subject and applying it to the real world, making it relatable. I also focus on giving your student the confidence they need to succeed in the classroom on their own. A bad grade, big test, or difficult concept can easily put a student into a funk of self-doubt. As their tutor, my goal is to change their attitude. Instead of being scared or worried, they will walk into that classroom ready for the challenge! I remind them that they know this subject, they have practiced, they are smart, and they can do it. Through all my experience tutoring I have found the best way to tell if a student understands a subject, concept, or the problem is to ask them to teach it to you. My favorite technique is to play a fellow students who doesn't understand and needs help. This is effective because for that moment your student becomes the teacher themselves.
