Dear Alumni and Members,

The Muslim Alumni Network of the University of Minnesota is deeply upset and angered regarding the death of George Floyd and all black brothers and sisters who have unjustly lost their lives at the hands of senseless police brutality. Our condolences go out to the family of George Floyd and hope that justice is served swiftly and to the full extent of the law; we stand behind the maxim that โ€˜justice delayed is justice deniedโ€™.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to assist in the response to community needs in light of the murder of George Floyd, we encourage you to donate to Al-Maaโ€™uun: LaunchGood.com/MN.

Graduate Muslim Student Association 06/06/2020

A current student at the University of Minnesota is looking to start a support group for Muslim graduate students on campus. If you would like to demonstrate interest in this group, please fill out the survey below and share it with other friends/colleagues who you think would be interested!

Brief Description: As more and more Muslims decide to pursue advanced degrees, we are faced with different challenges that may be difficult to overcome without the support of other Muslims who are in the same situation. We aspire for this organization to be one where Muslim graduate students can come together and share their stories and be sources of comfort and familiarity in a setting that is predominantly non-Muslim. This could be through fun and creative events that allow us to interact and share our passions!

Dear Alumni and Valued Friends:

Recent events stemming from the novel coronavirus--or COVID-19--situation are casting a wide shadow over normal routines. We at the Alumni Association recognize that these fast-unfolding events are creating concern and uncertainty for all of us.

As such, we want to make you aware of the latest developments around this situation in relation to the University of Minnesota and the Alumni Association.

Leaders at the University have been monitoring this evolving situation continuously over the past weeks and months. Updates are being made to the Safe Campus website.

To help minimize infections throughout the University community, U of M leadership have taken a number of recent actions: On Wednesday, President Joan Gabel announced that the current spring break for students will be extended to March 18 for the Twin Cities, Duluth and Rochester campuses, and to March 23 for the Morris and Crookston campuses. When students return to campus, faculty will continue classes for them via online, or alternative, instruction onlyโ€”outside the traditional classroom setting.

Today, President Gabel informed the University community that the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has confirmed that a University of Minnesota Twin Cities student has tested positive for COVID-19. The student is recovering in isolation off campus and is being monitored by health professionals. In addition, MDH is working to notify a limited number of people who may have had close contact with the patient and is advising them on next steps.

The University will remain open, pending further development. President Gabel announced that all major venues at the University of Minnesota, systemwide, will be closed to the public, following guidance provided by the State of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Health.

In addition, after President Trumpโ€™s announcement on Wednesday evening that he would close U.S. borders to most travelers from Europe in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, President Gabel said last night that approximately 500 U of M students currently studying abroad in that area are returning to the U.S. in the coming week. The University is assisting them with these arrangements.

University leadership have also decided to suspend all non-essential travel, both domestic and international, by faculty and staff for the near future to further reduce the potential of introducing COVID-19 to the University community.

Another piece of significant news is that Gopher Athletics, following the lead of other Big Ten colleges, has announced the cancellation of all athletic competitions through the end of the academic year.

All of these actions have been taken after much deliberation, thoughtful investigation, and consultation by leadership with experts both inside and outside the University. The University has sought advice from leading health care entities to inform its decisions, including the Minnesota Department of Health and the Universityโ€™s own medical experts including the Health Emergency Response Office (HERO) and Campus Public Health Officer Jakub Tolar, M.D.

As President Gabel has noted, COVID-19 has the potential to be serious for a small number of those infected, so moving students to an alternative learning format safeguards their health and that of others by reducing large numbers of people congregating in small areas.

Right now, decisions are being made on a very nearly real-time basis, as leaders at the University continue to monitor developments. You can find President Gabelโ€™s full statement about these decisions, and the most up-to-date information available from the University here.

In light of all this, and following the lead of the University itself, the Alumni Association has decided to postpone or cancel a number of upcoming in-person events. To check on the status of our events, visit the individual event pages on our website.

Although this remains an uncertain time, be assured that both the University and the Alumni Association will take every precaution necessary regarding this situation. We also stand ready to resume our normal programs and events when it is both safe and sensible to do so.

As always, we deeply value our relationship with all of you, and will keep you apprised of any new information.

Sincerely,
Lisa R Lewis
