Auckland Chamber Music Play
We are a group of keen amateur musicians who love to play and appreciate chamber music. We have a c
Hope we will be able to meet again soon as a group with the latest COVID developments.
In the mean time.. here is the of our most recent ad-hoc concert just before the lockdown started to reminisce on the good times (and hopefully they will be back again soon đ )
It's been 5 weeks since we last played chamber music and hopefully it won't be too much longer until we meet again...
But here's an event to look forward to in the coming months:
== the 2022 Auckland String Quartet summer school ==
check it out and sign up if you can attend - you won't regret it!
below is a message from the organisers:
Kia ora koutou,
I trust that you are all safe and well. Thank you all for you prompt applications for AQSS 2022. We almost have all the numbers required to go ahead, so unless Covid prevents us from doing so, weâll all be getting together at St Cuthbertâs College in January to play music together and enjoy one anotherâs company again!
Below are are current numbers. One of the violinists can only come for half the time so we still need 3 or 4 more violins or violas. If thereâs anyone you know whom you think might be interested, please encourage them to apply. Also, Iâm happy to provide them (or you) with more information if required. Iâve attached a poster which you can give them or point them in the direction of the website: https://asqss.co.nz
Violins: 19
Violins or violas: 4
Violas: 7
Cellos: 12
Iâll be sending out formal acceptances at the beginning of October which is when I need to confirm with St Cuthbertâs that weâre definitely going ahead. But, in the meantime, you can all assume that your applications have been accepted.
Finally, please ensure that youâre fully Covid vaccinated before the end of the year in case there are constraints on venue use (and also for the good or your own health and that of the population). Also, if you're from out of Auckland and booking flights, it would probably be wise to take out cancellation insurance in case Covid prevents us from going ahead.
Stay safe and well everyone and keep up your practice.
Kia kaha ki te puoro,
Roger.
came across this interesting webpage content today regarding 'chamber-music speak':
Chamber music is the finest type of teamwork. Long gone are the days when one player called all the shots. Playing in an ensemble is democratic today and each person should have an equal voice.
Itâs essential to learn âchamber-music-speak.â As in any relationship not pointing fingers results in smoother sailing.
1. Instead of saying youâre playing too loudly say: âthe balance isnât quite rightâ
2. Instead of saying youâre behind say: âwe are not together here.â
3. Instead of saying youâre playing out of tune say: âcan we play this slowly to fine-tune the intonation?â
4. Instead of saying youâre rushing here say: âcould we try it with a metronome just the two of us?â
5. Instead of saying you donât know your part say: âthis section is tough. Can we rehearse it under tempo?â
Disagreements can occur when youâre discussing repertory to play.
6. Instead of saying itâs my turn to choose say: âshall we draw straws for who decides this time?â Or âIâd like to play a work this time that is more challenging for my instrument.â
and for a bit of more fun with chamber music rehearsals - watch two set violin playing beethoven op 18 no 4:
