It’s been hot. The farmers are cranky. Lacking the energy to say something witty or insightful. At least this honeynut squash is happy with these hot days and nights really pushing it along. These two pictures are only about two weeks apart. Still a long way to go, but optimistic for a nice harvest. Such a radically different July than a year ago, when it was pretty much raining every other day. Okay this was a nice shade break.

We are excited about shallots this year after losing our entire 2023 crop to flooded fields. These guys, about 10,000 in all, got their start in the greenhouse in early March, got planted out in mid May, and will spend the next few months in this corner of the field where they will be weeded, watered, fed, and inspected for pests. Harvest usually takes place towards the end of August, they take a quick trip to the greenhouse to cure and harden their skins, and if all goes according to plan you should be enjoying them by the Fall Equinox. I’m tired just thinking about it😅

The fields finally dried out enough to break ground, about 10 days later than last year. And although it doesn’t feel great to start the season “behind” the one constant in this business is that no two years, months, days are ever the same. It’s what makes farming uniquely challenging and, in my opinion, so interesting. And we take solace in knowing this is just one of many many things that will go wrong this year 😅. So we put forth our best plan and then we change it, again and again and again until we limp over the finish line in November. Couldn’t imagine doing anything else

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Local Roots dinner at Tino’s in Hampton, a multi course meal where all of the ingredients are sourced from local producers. The food and service was incredible, but most of all I appreciated their efforts to educate their customers on why supporting the local food community was so important. I highly recommend you go check them out, and a big thank you to Tino’s for their support and commitment to local food!!

Aside from the getting out of bed part, flower harvesting is my favorite time on the farm. The first light peeking through the trees, the hum of the bees and chirping of the birds, the heat of the day hasn’t arrived yet, just surrounded by beauty as you hunt for the perfect bloom. Doesn’t get much better than that as far as I’m concerned.

My friend and talented photographer joined me for one a few weeks ago and, besides getting too many shots of me, I think he captured the experience pretty well. Thanks Dan!

We always have a little bit of a harvest lull in late spring, but especially so this year with the weather. Feels good to be getting back into harvest mode with some really happy fennel coming out of the field on this rainy Sunday morning. Find it , and keep an eye out for carrots, gold beets and celery all arriving shortly.

It’s a good year to be a high tunnel pepper…these guys are miles ahead of their poor brethren in the field. Shish*tos already with fruit on them, another week or two before we start picking. Also have some habaneros and other hots already flowering, destined for sauce . This was an experimental year but if all goes according to plan we expect to grow many more inside next year, which means an earlier start to the pepper season for all of you. *to

Last of the winter kale being harvested this week, which means we have a limited supply of kale raab available. For those unfamiliar, Kale is a biennial which goes to seed in the second year of its life. As soon as the warmer spring temps set in, the kale plants produce a delicious, tender flower stalk that can be prepared much like you would broccolini, or any other member of the brassica family. It’s a very short season for this delicacy, so reach out if interested!
