The painting shows Khodiyar Maa being visited by a myriad of pandits and deities. Her 6 sisters are also shown along the banks. The legend of Maa Khodiyar is around 700 AD. A man called Mamadiya Gadhvi (Mamadji Charan) lived in the Roishala village in Bhavnagar district. He had good relations with the then ruler Maharaj Shilbhadra. The ruler's ministers envied this exceptional relationship and hatched a plan to get rid of him.
One day, the doorkeepers did not let Mamadiya go into the palace and he was told that a childless man is not worthy of the king's presence. Mamadiya returned home and prayed to the god Shiva for progeny and decided to perform "Kamal pooja" by sacrificing his life. Just when he was about to kill himself, Shiva appeared and took him to the Snake Kingdom – Nagaloka to see the King of Snakes – Nagadev.
After hearing his story, the Nagadev's youngest daughter and her seven siblings decided to help him. The youngest daughter advised him to make eight cradles for eight children. Later due to the boon of Shiva and Nagadev, he was blessed with seven daughters (one being Janbai alias Khodiyar) and a son. The children were raised as fearsome warriors and always wore black cloths in memory of their native place, Nagaloka. Therefore, they were given the names as cobra sisters or Nagnechi, who was also the tutelary deity of the royal house of the erstwhile Marwar state.
Janbai saved her brother's life who was bit by a venomous bite by journeying underwater to Nagaloka and returned with Amrita (the elixir of life) with her. Janbai suffered an injury to the foot and could not walk properly so she rode a crocodile back to the surface, earning her divine status. She was known as Khodiyar from the word khodi (limping) and the

The above painting depicts three goddesses—Bahuchara Mata, Durga Mata and Vahanwati Mata being worshipped by a myriad of pandits.
Bahuchara Mata is one of the pivotal Hindu deities who enjoys the patronage of the transgender and transvestite community in India.
The goddess is one of the central religious figures amongst hijras, with many homes having small shrines dedicated to her. Seated on a rooster (to symbolise innocence), Bahuchara Mata is often depicted as a woman who carries a sword on her top right, the abhay hasta mudra (‘showering of blessings’) on her bottom right, a trident on her bottom left and a text of scriptures on her top left.

The painting depicts the goddess Vahanvati Sikotar Mata as she's perched upon a majestic boat and is worshipped by numerous pandits and also visited by other gods and godesses over the sea. Legend says that back in time when ships would lose their way, they would pray to Vahanvati Mata.
There's a popular tale that explains how Sikotar Mata started to be known as Vahanvati.
When drought took over Saurashtra region, a merchant named Jagdusa came to Khambhat and entrapped his ships. He was a true devotee of Maa Sikotar and soon his business grew in scale.
He became rich and he bought a gold chain for Sikotar Maa. But greed overtook him and instead of devoting to Sikotar Maa, he kept the chain for his wife.
That night, in his dream, Sikotar Maa appeared and told Jagdusa to take a look at his ships. Hastily, Jagdusa came out only to see his ships sinking in sea. He realized his mistake and immediately apologised Sikotar Maa. Kind Maa accepted his apologies and saved his ships from sinking. From this incident, Goddess is regarded as Vahanvati.

The artwork has been created by HARINATH NAMBHAKAM who is a Kalamkari artist from Srikalashti. He has an experience of over 35 years in this art skill.
There are two identifiable styles of Kalamkari art in India – Srikalahasti style and Machilipatnam style. In the Machilipatnam style of Kalamkari, motifs are essentially printed with hand-carved traditional blocks with intricate detailing painted by hands. On the other hand, Srikalahasti style of painting draws inspiration from the Hindu mythology describing scenes from the epics and folklore. This style holds a strong religious connect because of its origin in the temples.
In recent times, two other types of Kalamkari patterns have also emerged, based on the states where it is created. Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are two prime states in India, where two different types of Kalamkari patterns are done. The Andhra Kalamkari borrows design inspiration from forts, palaces and temples of India, along with motifs of animals and birds. While the Gujarat Kalamkari depict motifs of mythological characters like Krishna-Arjuna from Mahabharata, lord Krishna, lord Ganesha, lord Buddha etc.
