✨THIS WEDNESDAY!✨

Join 13thirty Cancer Connect on Zoom for their virtual Speaker Series: Passions in Action (Wednesday, April 12 | 6:00 p.m. EST).🎙️

Through this program, AYAs with cancer have the opportunity to hear a variety of compelling stories and informative messages from community members who transformed their passions into action. All AYAs, healthcare providers, advocates, and community members are welcome to join us on Zoom!

April presenter: Michaela Raes, founder of Breast Cancer Confidence.

After her breast cancer diagnosis at 28 years old, Michaela wondered if she would feel beautiful, feminine, or confident ever again. Despite her initial fears, she learned to appreciate her changing body with the creative and intimate approach of bo***ir portraits. The experience was so personally empowering that she co-founded the Breast Cancer Confidence Project, an organization dedicated to helping others reframe the way they view their bodies during and after illness. Michaela will share the challenges she endured, why photography was influential to her journey, and how she helps others.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month! Early signs of lung cancer are not always detectable. Symptoms typically occur when the cancer is advanced and may include:

A new cough that doesn't go away
Changes in a chronic cough or "smoker's cough"
Coughing up blood, even a small amount
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Wheezing
Hoarseness in your voice
Losing weight without trying
Bone pain
Headache

People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer. Quit smoking to lower your risk greatly. There's no guaranteed way to prevent lung cancer, but here are some other steps you can take:

Avoid secondhand smoke.
Test your home for radon.
Avoid carcinogens at work (e.g. toxic chemicals).
Exercise often.
Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.

If you are an adult going through treatment for cancer in CNY (Oneida, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga or Cortland counties) did you know that you are eligible to receive free Complementary Therapy sessions courtesy of CancerConnects? You can choose massage, reiki, therapeutic yoga, reflexology, healing touch or acupuncture! Click on this link for more info & for an application: http://www.cancerconnects.org/complimentaryTherapyProgram
Not only is Dave DeLuca one of CancerConnects’ dedicated board members, he is one of our Complementary Therapy Program licensed massage therapists. Dave is a people person, he loves to talk with people, and he is one of those special people who lets you know he is really listening. He wanted a career where he could give back, and he was excited to join CancerConnects’ Complementary Therapy program in 2011. “Being dealt the card of a cancer diagnosis can be traumatic. By providing massage therapy, I can make it a little less painful, less stressful, I give (my clients) an hour to remove themselves from it,” Dave said.
Massage therapy can help those in oncology treatment in a variety of ways: massage can help reduce scar tissue buildup and increase range of motion after surgery; it can reduce some of the side effects of treatment, like nausea, muscle aches and fatigue; and it can promote restful sleep. Massage therapy can also provide emotional benefits, by reducing stress and anxiety, and giving the client a safe space to feel cared for and listened to (and as we mentioned earlier, Dave is a wonderful listener!)
When asked about his final thoughts on CancerConnects and the Complementary Therapy Program, Dave said, “CancerConnects is helping people and I see that every day. I’ve seen it grow year after year, and it’s on a great path of continuing to serve people. It’s a gift to be on the front lines, helping others… I believe a positive mindset and the willingness to try new things lend themselves to positive outcomes.”
