So many informed, smart, consumers out there - we love ya! We’re working on an ingredients page to explain why we chose each and every ingredient in our formulas. Marketing terms are nice, but transparency is better.

What is a terpene or terpenoid? A terpene is a compound responsible for the scent in a plant. Terpenes are commonly associated with h**p because of the high amount of terpenes that the plant produces. But, terpenes can be found in all plants and flowers. Just like all compounds and molecules, they each can exhibit different effects when used in skincare products, and concentration is key. Too much of some common terpenes like limonene or pinene and the formula can be very irritating.

Pictured here are chamomile flowers, which contain the terpene bisabolol, a key ingredient in many of our formulas. Bisabolol has been used and studied for years, and is in also found in some select varieties of h**p. It has been shown to calm and soothe irritation and redness, and therefore can be found in many eczema and sensitive skincare products.

Ingredient highlight -Sunflower seed oil

Sunflower seed oil has soothing properties to help soothe itchy and inflamed eczema skin, and can improve skin hydration and preserve the integrity of the skin's natural barrier by increasing ceramide synthesis.

Natural oils have varying degrees of hydrating and protective properties. Research indicates that the ratio of fatty acids dictates which types of oils will be most beneficial in skincare for damaged barriers. Positive effects are generally associated with low oleic acid (OA) and high linoleic acid(LA) ratios. High LA concentrations have been shown to accelerate the development and repair of the skin barrier. Sunflower seed oil has one of the highest LA:OA ratios available.

Ingredient Highlight ~ H**p Oil

This oil is extracted from the flowers and stalks of h**p varieties. This natural oil typically has a high concentration of cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is one of more than 100 identified phytocannabinoids produced by the h**p plant, and certainly one of the more well known compounds produced by h**p. Oils can be further refined to extract CBD into a pure, isolated form. CBD is non-intoxicating, and in comprehensive skin safety tests done on CQuell's formulations, shown to be safe and unlikely to cause irritation.
