Polly Pocket is currently getting her spay on with Dr E. We re-assessed her eyes while here.
She is visual in both eyes. So it turns out both eyes do have the 3rd eyelid (that helps produce tears). Her issue is actually that she doesn’t have her main eyelid. She’s got a rare congenital condition called “eyelid agenesis”, she’s missing her upper eyelids. This birth defect means the eye can become dry and prone to damage. In her case too, it isn’t the eyelashes that have been rubbing against the surface of her right eye, but actually hair around her eye that’s doing it. This is a condition called “trichiasis”, which can be very painful. She has have some corneal damage from the hairs that appear to be redolving but this will continue to happen without treatment.
The good news is that most kittens who have their condition treated appropriately can go on to live happy and healthy lives.
So next stop will be an ophthalmologist. If mild they may just need to pluck, but Dr E believes in all likelihood it’s more severe from what she’s seeing and they may need to do a cryoepilation (freezing procedure) that damaged the hair follicles around the eye so that they don’t grow and go into the eye.
They may also recommend a graft (surgical reconstruction of the lid), as this is the only way to actually cure eyelid agenesis.
Unfortunately without treatment, most cats will suffer ongoing discomfort and damage to the eye that will eventually lead to irreversible damage. And as she has vision, no one is recommending removing her eyes. So step by step is how we’ll need to do this.
With your help.
The consultation alone can be $250-400. We’ll be checking with Guardian as well as they are used to working closely with rescues. And we’ll go from there.
All of this suffering could have been prevented if her mom had been spayed. But once here, in our care, we need to do what we can to help her.
