Today is the fourth anniversary of the acknowledgment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in the United States. On June 19th, 1865, federal soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the war had ended and that the enslaved people were free β€” a full 2.5 years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of ending slavery in the United States.

Shared experiences or perspectives in the therapy room can make a world of difference β€” for both the client and the therapist.Β

To celebrate 🌈 this year, we asked one of our clinicians, Joslyn Reisinger, LMHC, to share their thoughts on what inspired them to do the work they do. Joslyn works with clients from all backgrounds, but their specialization is working with young q***r adults who have experienced trauma in areas like relationships β€” work that has grown out of their own experiences.

Happy Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month πŸŒŸβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹As we celebrate our clients, clinicians and colleagues who identify as Hispanic/Latine this month, we also know there's a significant gap in mental health care in the U.S. for these communities more broadly: Only ~35% of Hispanic/Latine adults with mental illness receive treatment each year, compared to the national average of 46.2%.

Hispanic/Latine people can face a lot of barriers in accessing care, one of which is language. That’s why we’re thrilled to share that we’re now offering bilingual Spanish-English therapy services in Florida!

July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, which is a time set aside to promote mental health awareness in all communities and among all races and cultures. This awareness month is observed each July to shed light on the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face in regard to mental illness in the U.S.With BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month in mind, we are sharing a breakdown of the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility. Many of us have heard about the notion of cultural competence or learning about various cultural groups and how to interact with individuals from different backgrounds. Cultural competence provides an essential framework for considering culture in therapy, but it is not necessarily enough. Cultural humility β€” on the other hand β€” provides a framework to help fill in some of the existing gaps πŸ§©β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Cultural humility acknowledges that every individual has their own unique experiences based on their culture, which can continue to evolve over time. It goes without saying that we exist in an unjust world β€” and a lens of cultural humility brings in the idea that therapists themselves have a cultural context, which must be brought to light in order to balance power dynamics and allow for ongoing learning and reflection.

As we reflect back on the month, Two Chairs Therapist Ruth Tsai put together this helpful guide for honoring Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€œHistorically, AANHPI groups have been least likely to access mental health services, with potential barriers including the negative stigma of mental health in AANHPI cultures, lack of shared culture with therapists, and economic or financial challenges,” says Tsai.

By raising awareness of the experiences of these communities, we can work toward a stronger sense of safety and belonging.
