Happy School Social Work Week friends!
The last year has been challenging. It has been a year of dark times and tumultuous waves. A world-wide pandemic and racial inequities have caused anxiety, stress, and turmoil. Yet, School
Social Workers have been a light of HOPE for the students, families, and communities which they serve. School Social Workers are a true beacon of hope for the hurting, marginalized, anxious, or weary. School Social Workers are valuable all the time!
But, this week, join us in Celebrating School Social Work Week 2021!
!
As School Social Workers we not only advocate for our students and families but our TEACHERS as well.
1. "Now is the time to commit to prioritizing public schools and the 90% of Hoosier kids who rely on them. The current budget bill (HB 1001) prioritizes expanding private school vouchers to wealthier families and creating yet another privatization program with education savings accounts, costing a total of $491 million. These are dollars coming out of funding for public schools.
Indiana already ranks last in our region in teacher pay and 41st in the nation in per pupil funding." Indiana's private school voucher program is already the largest in the country.
2. "SB 251... singles out educators who choose to pay Association dues through payroll deduction – a routine practice that has been available to employees for decades; not only with regard to their professional union dues but also with regard to everything from health insurance premium payments to various charitable and philanthropic causes.
This bill is an attempt to single out teachers to weaken ties they have with their associations by overregulating at the state and local levels what is, for every other public employee, a routine administrative function."
3. On top of this, Indiana teachers are being DENIED access to the COVID-19 vaccine. When offered the opportunity to get on the waitlist for leftover vaccines at certain pharmacies, teachers jumped at the chance, but when the governor found out, he put the kibosh on that.
We hope everyone is using the virtual calm room as another resource during this time. Enjoy ❤️

Parents, even teacher parents, give yourself and your kids grace right now. And when you think you’ve given enough, give some more. BE who they need you to be, even if that means academic work doesn’t get to take priority. If you put too much burden on yourself it will be difficult to remain regulated and navigate this with your kids.
Indiana Governor Holcomb’s COVID-19 address on March 19, 2020, included the closure of all Indiana schools until May 1, 2020. In light of this news, New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp. is working on an eLearning/non-traditional instructional plan for our students. Details of this plan will be shared early next week.
