Got the awesome opportunity a few weeks back to catch up with my buddy Joe Lala of and check out his R&D facility where he designs and tests some badass parts for the Z/G and Supra chassis! It was awesome getting to talk shop with Joe and he even let me get a glimpse of his latest part. Make sure you go give him a follow to keep up to date with what heā€™s working on. He also tunes and does full builds!

Good Enough Garage Presents - Mall of Stance

Iā€™ve said it before and Iā€™ll say it again, Location, Location, Location. Location is truly everything, and something I struggle heavily with when shooting cars. It can be extremely difficult in choosing a proper location to fit a car. Its gotta be interesting, but not over busy. The location also has to fit the car, you wouldnā€™t put a big tire drag car on an off road trail. A lot of thought and research goes into finding each location for each shoot.

The same can be said for car shows, possibly even on a larger scale. The location has to have space to house the show cars and have space for people, which I imagine is a struggle in itself. Lately Iā€™ve noticed a nice increase in interesting show locations, if you can remember a year or so ago we covered a Motorcycle show in a brewery and it was an incredible environment.

Recently our good friends over at Good Enough Garage announced they would be putting on a show of their own. The location? Inside of a mall. It was an awesome concept that turned into an awesome event a couple weeks ago.

With a special selection of cars strategically placed inside the mall, and a special lot outside with more showcase parking and plenty of space to hang out and enjoy the company of other enthusiasts, it was an absolute spectacle to see. A lot of negativity has unfortunately surrounded events like this one, and another recent event held at an amusement park, and to be frank, I donā€™t understand it. The car show scene has always been about flashy cars and I feel like hosting shows in new interesting places exposes a new generation of kids, and even a demographic that wouldnā€™t normally be exposed to these types of builds an opportunity to be exposed to something new and I for one, am here for it.

I heard numerous mall goers talking about how theyā€™ve never seen anything like this, and how cool it was to see cars like this on display. Thatā€™s something special, and something Iā€™m sure these non car people will remember for a long time.

As always, a huge shoutout to the team at Good Enough Garage. They continuously put in an incredible amount of effort to host these safe, interesting events, and the price tag of free to attend is something that deserves recognition.

Once a year, every summer, The Community East Park in Fairborn, Ohio, transforms into every car enthusiast's dream. The park is filled with cars from front to back as far as you can see. It transforms into, Whitetrash and Whitewalls.

Don't let the name fool you. Whitetrash and Whitewalls is a staple show of the Dayton car community and is like no other in the area. It's like stepping into a time machine, but with a modern twist.

For the most part, it's like being at an old school 50's car show. There is a rockabilly/blues style cover band (Todd The Fox), Pinup girls wandering around taking pictures with vehicles before and after the pinup contest, and plenty of classic hot rods. It gives off good classic show vibes!

There is more to it than that. Scattered with the classic cars you'll find mini trucks, lifted trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, low riders, and other modern modded rides. Not to mention there is an array of bad-ass handmade awards! This show has, no doubt, something for everyone.

If you don't come for the cars, at least stick around to check out the many fantastic local vendors and food trucks from all over the area!

Huge thanks to Dave Bonin, owner of Bonified Customs in Fairborn, and all his staff for putting on this killer show for 11 years and counting! Thanks for putting in the work to make one of, if not THE, best show of the season every year!

But they definitely couldn't do it alone! Be sure to check out the sponsors of this year's event! Let them know we appreciate them!

Community - Dyno Day with Dewla Dezign

All too often in the car community we focus on the wrong things. We focus on what wheels someone runs, or who won what trophy at a show when someone else shouldā€™ve, or even what style someone decides to go with on their car. We prefer to focus more on the positive things in the car community, the things we all love and the things that bring us all together.

Joe runs his business, Dewla Dezign, with the same mindset. He specializes in the 300zx, 350z, 370z, and MKIV Supra chassis, designing and fabricating parts in house such as splash shields and shift k***s as well as being a dealer for pretty much anything you could need. Joe also has an in house dyno and is very knowledgeable with tuning the aforementioned cars, along with many others.

A few weeks ago I got word that Dewla Dezign would be holding a community dyno day and I knew Iā€™d have to come check it out. Joe would be providing 3 pulls for $75, an absolute steal by the way, free food and water, and above all, a place for the community to come together to enjoy some awesome cars and even better vibes.

The lot outside quickly filled with all styles of cars, Supras, Miatas, Mustangs, and even a beautiful turbo F20 swapped Toyota AE86 Corolla. All the different styles of cars and everyone mingled together. As cars rolled on and off the dyno there was some friendly banter with everyone throwing guesses on power figures, but nobody was doing it with any sort of malice.

It was very refreshing and an awesome reminder why we all do this, the cool cars, the environment, and the overall friendly, welcoming feeling that is the car community. A huge shoutout to Joe at Dewla Dezign for hosting an incredible event, and we look forward to the future success of your business.

Iā€™m so glad youā€™re here!

Chopstix Special - Jeffā€˜s 1927 Ford Model T

Hot rods, the ultimate cool. I think hot rods are the only automotive genre that everyone loves. Truck guys, stance guys, drag racers, drifters, I think itā€™s safe to say everyone has some form of hot rod on their list of ā€œmust ownsā€. Itā€™s a vast world with so many different styles, itā€™s easy to see why it appeals to everyone.

Jeff has his own approach and has built the Model T you see over the last 4 years. The body began life as a 1927 Ford Open Air sedan, and is actually three separate bodies that have been shortened, narrowed, and channeled to create the perfect roadster body. The doors are actually originally the rear doors, but the entire front door section has been removed. The seat backs were made by cutting a 55 gallon barrel in half and worked into the rear deck. The amount of time and attention to details is incredible, and itā€™s truly a car you could spend hours looking at and still be finding new things. One of my favorite things about the car is the front grill, its been perfectly chopped and narrowed to match the size and slope of the body.

Did I mention the powertrain is a four cylinder 22RE taken from a 1985 Toyota Tacoma? Not ideal from a traditional hot rod standpoint, but I really think it captures the true essence of hot rodding, making the best of what you have. This past winter Jeff spent a ton of time fitting a 59 trim turbo on the 22RE. He says it was one of the most thought provoking things heā€™s done to the T as his goal was to maintain visual symmetry with the motor. From the carb hat made from an S&S Harley intake, to all the turbo piping, it was all done with heavy thought on the visual outcome, and Jeff absolutely nailed it.

For a full build list, check out our site www.Su***deGarage.co !

I would like to dedicate this story to my dad, Van Wicks, and to Jeffs grandfather Don Sams. My dad is the single most influential person that got me into cars, and absolutely loved hot rods. As fate would have it, I actually took the photos for this feature on his birthday. From talking with Jeff during the shoot I could tell his grandfather Don had a huge impact on his love of cars, even driving Dons all original Model T away on his wedding day. One last huge shoutout to Jeffs grandmother for allowing us to shoot the Chopstix Special at her absolutely beautiful farm, and for welcoming me into her home.

Iā€™m so glad youā€™re here!

Modern Legends - Kaylin Hines Civic Type R

The 90ā€™s bred some of the most legendary Japanese cars. The S13, FD RX-7, Supra, NSX, and the Civic Type R were all cars with incredible souls that created high emotion and exhilarating driving experiences. They werenā€™t the fastest cars on the block, nor the most refined, but the spirit, the spirit is what makes them legends.

I remember being a teenager watching videos on YouTube and hearing a Phoenix Yellow Civic Type R absolutely ripping around a track. The aggressive intake noises combined with the beautiful exhaust note, I could truly feel the spirit through my screen. The remake of the Type R came with much anticipation. So many other manufacturers have attempted to bring back legends and have miserably failed. Fortunately, Honda nailed the spirit with the perfect combination of modern technology and classic soul.

Kaylin has been into Hondaā€™s for over 14 years, and I knew his Type R would be incredible. Heā€™s managed to keep the spirit alive with his Civic, being careful to keep the car balanced with suspension, power, and incredible looks. An upgraded PRL charge pipe/turbo inlet/intake, flex fuel, a full Invidia exhaust, among other things has pushed the Type R to around 400 whp, not bad for a Japanese hot hatch. Kaylin also added a fair amount of aero to accentuate the already sharp and aggressive body lines, most notably a Verus engineering front splitter and diffuser.

The FK8 Type R is the perfect reincarnation of a Japanese legend, and Kaylin did a phenomenal job keeping the classic spirit alive.
