Overseas blending plant accusations - Nigeria imported $2.25bn fuel from Malta - Prudence Journal 26/07/2024

In a recent revelation, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, founder of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, claimed that officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) are operating blending plants in Malta. Supporting this, new data shows Nigeria imported $2.25 billion worth of fuel from Malta over the past nine years. According to Trade Map data, Nigeria's import of petroleum oils from Malta surged significantly, reaching $2.8 billion in 2023, a 342% increase from $47.5 million in 2013.

Dangote's claims have sparked controversy and speculation, with some Nigerians questioning the integrity of NNPC personnel. In his statement, Dangote mentioned that traders and NNPC officials have blending plants in Malta, implying questionable activities. However, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari has denied any involvement in such operations outside Nigeria, attempting to quell the suspicions surrounding these assertions.

This revelation comes amid scrutiny of Nigeria's petroleum import practices and the operations of its national oil company, adding another layer of complexity to the country's ongoing energy sector challenges. The significant rise in fuel imports from Malta highlights the need for transparency and accountability within the NNPC and related entities.
