BRETT RYAN-To the Queen of my Heart
Twenty years ago this week Lara and I spent six days in the South of France tending to music business then we rented a zippy little car, threw our backpacks in the trunk and set our sights on Rome where we had a nuptial date with destiny.
We were married in the Piazza del Campidoglio, overlooking the Ruins of the ancient Roman Forum, designed by old Michelangelo himself. The ceremony was complete with a classic 1936 Al Bowlly soundtrack of “Blue Moon” warbling in the background.
After a quick detour to the Sistine Chapel, we loaded up once again and made our way to Venice. There we were, cruising down the Grand Canal, passing under the Rialto Bridge watching the sunset, I thought to myself does life get any better than this?.......I think not.
I wrote this song, words borrowed from Percy Bysshe Shelley, for my beautiful bride, Lara you truly are “The Queen of my Heart”
From BRETT RYAN'S CD '"The Poet's Broken" adapted from the Percy Bysshe Shelley poem of the same name.
BRETT RYAN - ECSTASY
When Lara and I got together in the summer of 1995 we had an orange 73’ VW Westphalia affectionately known as Lucille. Every weekend we’d take off with a posse of friends on a spontaneous adventure somewhere in Nova Scotia. The Aylesford Zoo in the valley, to hang with the Lions and lemurs, sputtering up Kelly’s mountain on the Cabot trail with barely three cylinders firing. One of our most memorable trips was to the Oven’s on the south shore. The campground has been owned and operated by the Chapin family for generations. Perched atop a rocky cliff overlooking the mighty Atlantic Ocean it takes one’s breath away. We arrived, a band of weekend banshees, equipped with guitars, various noisemakers and of course the requisite supply of wines and spirits intent on appeasing the gods.
After a fabulous afternoon of playing tourists and some cautious imbibing we gathered around a roaring campfire beneath a spectacular sky where we broke out into spontaneous fits of song and dance. Shortly after midnight it became clear not everyone in the campground wished to participate in our playful debauchery so with guitars and spirits in hand we descended down the goat path along the cliff into the caves. With the ocean thundering in we continued the merriment by flickering candlelight. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.
This song pays homage to the weekend pagan in us all!!

From the CD "The Poet's Broken"
BRETT RYAN- The Poet's Broken
Inspired by English romantic poet John Keats (1795 –1821).
His poems were not generally well received during his lifetime however his reputation grew after his death and by the end of the 19th century, he had become one of the most beloved of all English poets.
This is an homage to artists the world over who are driven to create often with little or no hope of eking out a living.
If you like an artists’ work- buy it. You may be supporting the next Leonard Cohen or Van Gogh.

Halifax Mardi Gras 1988
Look for Brett Ryan dressed up as Elvis and singing hound dog? Shortly after the crowd put him up on a car to sing and he was arrested for inciting a riot! While the police were getting organized, they put him in the parking garage at Papa Gino's (remember the bars?) the crowd starting chanting "Free Elvis, Free Elvis"
