I started this journey 5 months ago and was finally able to find time to take all 3 parts to this test. it is far from easy but luckily over the past 10 years I have been able to work along side some of the smartest guys in the industry and work with a lot of different processes and materials to make this test a lot easier this is only the beginning to this new chapter of being a Certified Welding Inspector. Only the upmost quality and knowledge for our customers at Freedom Fabrication & Repairs

Fun Fact Friday, todays topic is about welding in space,

The first people to weld in space were Russian cosmonauts named Georgi Shonin and Valeri Kubasov. This happened back in 1969. The goal of this first trial was to test the dangers of welding in outer space.

Welding in space is possible using a process known as cold welding. On Earth, you need heat to weld two metals together. But in space, you don’t have to use heat to fuse two metals.

There’s a lot of pressure in space that fuses two metal parts together. But this can only happen if the materials are clean and similar. The oxide layer on the material prevents cold welding from happening.

Here’s a quick video on more about cold welding

We are going to do something a little different and end our fridays off with a fun fact Friday. here at Freedom Fabrication & Repairs we are always looking to advance our knowledge base on anything welding related.

We are going to start off with Explosion Welding (one of our personal favorites).

Explosion welding is used to clad carbon steel or aluminium plate with a thin layer of a harder or more corrosion-resistant material (stainless steel, nickel alloy, titanium, or zirconium).

Explosion welding is accomplished by stacking 2 plates on top of one another with an air gap between them. Then placing a high powered explosive on top and detonating it. The force from the explosion is enough to join these two dissimilar materials together.

Explosion welding was found around the WW1 era when it was observed that pieces of shrapnel sticking to armor plating were not only embedding themselves, but were actually being welded to the metal.

Below is a link to a quick video on the process👇🏻
