For our next story from the field we are traveling to Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu!🌊🐳

Here Narayani, a researcher, recounts her interaction with the fisherwoman and the community!🐠🐙

Read below:

It was almost noon in Rameswaram. I had planned the visit a long time after the landings were over just so I can catch the fish vendors when they are free. As I walked towards the water, I noticed the drying fishes. Just near the drying area, there were some women chilling in the shade. I was clicking pictures of the fish. One woman noticed me and asked me what I was upto. I briefly told her about how I study fishes and I had come to Rameswaram to talk to them. This launched a series of followup questions, including my hometown, type of work I do, etc. One fisherwoman put her hands in her chin in total bewilderment. "What, why would you even study fishes, of all the things?", she asked. Everyone laughed and asked me to come under the shade.

An hour of random gossip, squeals of laughter followed, with minor interviews squeezed inbetween. As it happens during most of the interviews, they ended up knowing more about me than I did about them. I am sure that the waves had evesdropped and had a great time, just like me.

Read about a field story from our reseracher Abhishek from a habour on the southernmost tip of India!

Have you heard that Tamil Nadu has an East & a West Coast?
Here's what fishing in the deep south, i.e. Kanyakumari district looks like during the fishing ban. The ban on mechanised fishing lasts from Apr 15 - Jun 15 on the East coast and Jun 1 - Jul 31 on the West coast. Boats and harbours, which are typically bustling with activity, turned empty one after the other.

A momentary pause as the sea replenishes only occurs between Jun 1 and Jun 15 on this strip of coast that's neither East nor West. The coastal communities of Colachel, Chinnamuttom and Muttom are some of our most experienced fishers and navigators. Some still use the stars and roam the Indian Ocean from the international waters in Australia to those near Africa.

Small reminders of India's maritime history!

"Beautification" and "Development" drives across cities threaten small scale fishing communities as much as they threaten fish and marine ecosystems.

The latest victim is the Nochikuppam fishmarket. Those of you who have been on our fishplorations have explored this market - but now the Tamil Nadu High Court has declared that this market is an "encroachment". Which means that the police are legally authorised to shut this market. Fishers have been protesting such efforts to push them out of the area for over 5 years now. In fact they asked that it be given a heritage tag! This market and the fishing community that runs it has used this space way before Chennai City became a metropolis.

Join hands with the fishing community by writing about your experience at this heritage market and tell the why Nochikuppam market needs to exist.

Watch this space for information about protests in favour of the market continuing

InSeason Fish

InSeason Fish aims to introduce seafood eaters to the diversity that our oceans have to offer, in order to avoid overfishing of any particular species. Eating diverse seafood not only helps the ocean, it is beneficial to human health too - by lowering our exposure to heavy metals and increasing our exposure to Omega3 fatty acids.

Through the seafood guide, we want people to avoid eating particular species of fish during their breeding season. So that those fish can breed to a healthy population, ensuring we have a good supply of food for the future.

The guide covers both the east cost and the west coast of India, highlighting the species that are safe to eat and the fish to be avoided every month. With over 100 species to choose from, seafood eaters can always find a species of fish that is "in season" to eat, and avoid those that are breeding.
