"Teach your children how to train their dog; Teach your children how to act around your dog. We don’t mean for that to sound offensive, but it’s heartbreaking to have to give your dog up because of something that could’ve been avoided. We are here to educate.

Dobermans are devoted and loyal family members. They do well with children if both are trained properly. Just as you need to teach your dog boundaries and to respect your personal space, you also need to teach your children to respect your dog’s boundries and their personal space.

When you have had all you can take or just need to be alone, you can walk into another room and shut the door. Your dog can't do that so your dog needs to have a safe place where they can go if they are stressed, tired, overwhelmed, scared or just need some chill/alone time. This is a human free zone.

Children naturally love their dogs but must be taught the rules and must be supervised at all times. They need to be taught and reminded of the do's and don'ts of being around a dog, such as:

▪️You never grab your dog to give it bear hugs.
▪️You don’t poke or push your dog.
▪️You don't step , sit, or jump on your dog.
▪️You don't sneak up on your dog.
▪️You don't rough house with or around your dog
▪️You don't bother your dog when it's eating, sleeping or in it's crate.

Remember your dog can't say things like, "Stop it!" , "I don't like that!" or "You scared me!" But your dog is giving signals and clearly asking your child to stop but children being children don't understand the signals your dog is giving them, so they continue until the unthinkable happens. Since dogs don't talk, they may pull away, give a slight growl or a tiny pinch as a warning or to show their discomfort. If their warning is ignored, it can escalate and could have disastrous results.

Let me phrase it like this, you are sound asleep and someone jumps on you and pins you down or hurts you, how do you respond? Do you wake up all sunshine and roses or do you come up swinging cause you are scared, hurt and afraid that you are being attacked?

Think about this scenario, your children are fighting, and on your last nerve, do you ignore them or do you stop them? When your children are fighting, your dog doesn't know the difference between play fighting, rough housing and real fighting and could become reactive. Your dog might growl because they don't like your children fighting or get overstimulated and might join in fight.

When you are training your dog, everyone in the household should be involved. It is especially important to get your children involved. Letting your children be involved in training helps reinforce the rules, teaches them responsibility, to respect their dog, and create a stronger lifelong bond." ! -HADR
