Tampereen Sävel - Tampere Vocal Music Festival. What a treat to be back after four years! We had less groups than before taking part in the competition for vocal groups, but still found three wonderful groups to be awarded. Høst Vocals, Les Itinérantes and Flok Vocals - please continue to delight us with your art for a long, long time. ❤️
I also managed to do a coaching session together with Peder Karlsson for AORA, the Swedish group who won the previous (online) competition in 2021. What a great group they have become! Check them out. Jätte jätte bra.
Being the jury chair is an honor and a dream job, when you can hand pick the people you would want to adjudicate with. This time we had an all new jury: Janis Siegel (The Manhattan Transfer), Susanna Lukkarinen (Club For Five), Morten Vinther Sørensen (The Real Group) and one of my all-time favorite human beings, Bob Chilcott (The King's Singers). We counted that within the jury we had 121 years of experience of singing on a professional vocal group. What a treat to work with such a nice and competent bunch of people. Thank you! ❤️

"Kesäkantaatti", sävellykseni sinfoniaorkesterille ja kuorolle Eino Leinon runoihin, esitetään tänään Kuopiossa valtakunnallisten musiikkilukiopäivien konsertissa. Sävellyksen esittävät Kuopion kaupunginorkesteri johtajanaan Atso Almila yhdessä satapäisen musiikkilukiolaiskuoron kanssa. Konsertti striimataan ja on nähtävissä orkesterin YouTube-kanavalla.
"Kesäkantaatti" oli pohjoismaisten opiskelijalaulujuhlien (NSSS) tilausteos ja se kantaesitettiin Oulussa vuonna 2017. Kantaesityksen johti viime vuonna edesmennyt ystäväni Jaakko Kuusisto. Kuopiossa kuultavan version orkestraatio on uusi ja sen on tehnyt Vili Robert Ollila.

Iloisia uutisia alkuvuoteen! Vuonna 2017 Oulussa kantaesitetty, orkesterisäestyksellinen kuoroteokseni "Kesäkantaatti" tullaan esittämään valtakunnallisten musiikkilukiopäivien konsertissa. Viisiosainen teos on sävelletty Eino Leinon samannimiseen runoteokseen vuodelta 1916. Konsertin johtaa Atso Almila.

Applying for the Contest for Vocal Ensembles at the 2023 Tampereen Sävel - Tampere Vocal Music Festival has started! I am very honored to continue as the chairman of the jury. Having been in the jury since 2003, I can safely say that it is one of my absolute favorite things to do.
This year we have many new jury members, amazing people and vocal group legends Janis Siegel (The Manhattan Transfer), Bob Chilcott (ex - The King's Singers), Morten Vinther Sørensen (ex - The Real Group) and Susanna Lukkarinen (ex - Club For Five). Pretty amazing lineup!

Just finished editing and co-arranging a new choral piece VABADUS by Kimmo Pohjonen (official page) for Eesti Filharmoonia Kammerkoor / Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
It was an honor to be involved. 🙏🏻
The premiere is in Tallinn on June 30th at the choir’s 40th anniversary concert and conducted - naturally - by Tõnu Kaljuste. 💎

I sang bass with Grex Musicus from 1991 until 1997 and from those years with the choir I have so many great memories, both musical and non-musical. Without that experience I wouldn't be who I am today.
I have had the honor of composing commisioned pieces for them in 2001, 2011 and most recently in 2021 for the choir's 30th anniversary concert. Among the five commissions three have been set to poems by Pablo Neruda, translated into Finnish.
Here is "Saarella tuulee" (Wind on the island) perfomed for the first time in front of an audience.
The conductor is Marjukka Riihimäki, the founder of Grex Musicus. I love her to bits.

What an amazing weekend it was in Oulu at the NSSS 2017 festival. I couldn't be more happy and proud of the performance and the audience response for my commissioned piece "Kesäkantaatti". Thanks to all the 1100 wonderful and dedicated singers, Oulu Symphony Orchestra and Jaakko Kuusisto for making my music come to life!

One of the biggest turning points and defining moments in our early career was winning the contest for vocal groups in Tampere in 1999. This June, 18 years after our win, Jussi will be chairing the new jury of the competition. Applications can be sent until the end of this month, so if you have a group we strongly encourage you to send your entries!

Visit from Finland on our rehearsal today; Jussi Chydenius from Rajaton, who will be producer on our next album. Really promising!
I sang with Grex Musicus from 1991 to 1997. The choir turns 25 years this year and they have their anniversary concert on November 12th in Helsinki. Tonight I went to their rehearsal to listen to "Tämänkin hämärän olemme kadottaneet", a piece I wrote to a poem by Pablo Neruda (Finnish text by Pentti Saaritsa) for their 20th anniversary in 2011. Goosebumps and cold shivers! So happy for them and very proud of the piece. Go and see the concert if you're around!
