Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress. Chisholm didn't stop with Congress. In the 1972 presidential campaign, she became the first African American candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

Shirley Chisholm broke ground for women and people of color for generations to come through her life's work.
