Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence. Use the word in the bold, don’t change it. You may use between three to eight words. Write your variant in the comments below. I’ll post the correct variant tomorrow.

Enhance your vocabulary through reading!📚 Let’s talk about the magic of reading for pleasure and how it supercharges your vocabulary! It provides you with an excellent opportunity to recycle vocabulary you’ve recently learned. 🧠✨Studies show you need to bump into a word 3 times while reading or 6-7 times while listening to cement it in your memory. 📖 But here’s the kicker: pick books that match your level! How to check it? It’s considered that you should aim for no more than 5 new words per page. If there are more new words, you might feel that the book is too difficult and get frustrated. And it’s not obligatory to read books in the original; you can always find adapted books of your level. The most important thing is that it should not be too difficult or too simple for you, and you should enjoy what you are reading. 💫 Right now, I’m immersed in «Joyful Wisdom: Embracing Change and Finding Freedom» by Y. Rinpoche - it’s a real gem! 💎✨ What about you? Share your current reads in the comments below! »

So, after diving into receptive retrieval, it’s time to ramp things up with the productive stage! No more passive nods when you stumble upon a word; now it’s all about flexing those memory muscles with intentional recall. 💡 And guess what? There’s a whole toolbox of tricks to help you out. I’m going to share some of them:📚💻 Flashcards (paper cards or online cards). I recommend Quizlet cards (see the post about it).📰 Gapped texts. For example, if you are reading an article/a coursebook text, cover some newfound words you want to learn (you do this stage only when you’ve learnt the words passively i.e. their definitions, use, grammar etc.) and challenge yourself to recall them the next day. You can cover the whole word or phrase, or leave only the first letter of the targeted vocabulary.📝 Gapped sentences. Take some sentences with the targeted vocabulary from a dictionary. I recommend working with 10 words/sentences at a time. Cover the words and return to them in a couple of days. You can add their definitions in brackets to recall them faster or try to recall them just from the context.📖 Revisit your course materials. Don’t let those exercises gather dust! Come back to the same exercises after a few days, a week, or even a month. You’ll be amazed at how much more you’ll master with each revisit.✏️ Personalization. Make your own sentences with these words. It’s better not to make just abstract sentences, but about something that relates to you personally.💬🌱 Got any tricks up your sleeve for learning new words? Part 1 🦋💭✨ Ever feel like learning a new word is like trying to catch a fleeting butterfly? You spot it, you might even pin it down with a quick search for its meaning, but before you know it, it’s fluttered out of your memory again.First of all, noticing is only the first part of learning. Besides, understanding a word means not only knowing its definition/translation, but also:- Its form (how the word is pronounced, its spelling, what part of speech it is)- Its use (its grammar function (e.g., transitive, intransitive verbs, singular/plural nouns, etc.), its register (formal/informal), its frequency, its collocations (the way in which some words are often used together)So, once you’ve noticed a word, it’s time to bring it into your inner circle through retrieval. There are two ways to do so – receptive and productive. Now I’ll talk about receptive retrieval. Although it’s less effective, it’s still vital. There are some ways to do so:📚💡 Delve deeper into dictionaries (e.g., Cambridge, Oxford, Longman dictionaries) and read as many examples as you can, paying attention to its collocations, its grammar structures, etc. Reading about the word is also a part of learning.📚 Read and listen as much as you can. In this form of extensive reading or listening, you’ll definitely come across recently noticed words; pay attention to them.📝💬 Make some notes and return to them from time to time. But wait, there’s more! Ever tried Youglish.com? It’s like a treasure trove of word wisdom, where you can hear your new word in a variety of contexts from YouTube videos.💬🌱 Got any tricks up your sleeve for learning new words? I’ve always liked cards for learning and teaching purposes. However, paper cards are not always comfortable to bring along. Besides, with the digitalization of everything, now it seems a reasonable idea to use an app that will replace paper cards. Around five or six years ago, I discovered Quizlet, and since then, it’s been one of my favorite apps, which I use regularly. What are its benefits?
🧠 You can enter an unlimited number of words and make as many sets as you want.
🔄 Different modes of learning help you learn words quicker and in a fun way – Flashcards, Learn, Match, Test.
🖼️🎧 Quizlet supports multimedia elements such as images and audio. Associating words with visual cues or hearing their pronunciation can aid comprehension and retention.
📱Quizlet is accessible across multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. This flexibility enables users to study anytime, anywhere, fitting learning into their busy schedules.
🌟 It’s possible to select words that you need to learn better and work only with them.
📊 How do I make cards?
- With beginners and low-level students, I use translation into L1 and a gapped sentence as an example.
- With high-level students, I use a definition, a gapped sentence (I leave only the first letter of the targeted word, it’s also possible to put a full gap instead of the word), and collocations if possible.
🚀✨ Overall, Quizlet is a powerful tool for learning new words effectively. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced learner, Quizlet can support your language learning journey.

To illustrate how it works and help you learn some advanced vocabulary, I’m sharing one of my sets based on a well-known textbook “English Vocabulary in Use,” Unit 18 “Home styles, lifestyles”. Hope you’ll enjoy it!

“📺 We all know that watching English videos, films or TV series can enhance your listening skills. I watch something daily and I want to start by sharing my top 3 TV series picks.🎩💕 Bridgerton: Set in the early 19th century, this captivating period drama follows the esteemed Bridgerton family as they navigate the high society’s intricate web of gossip, scandal, and romance. With its sumptuous costumes, opulent sets, and a diverse cast of characters, Bridgerton delivers a visually stunning and immersive experience that transports viewers to a bygone era. However, what truly sets this series apart is its modern twist on the classic romance genre, tackling issues of identity, societal expectations, and the pursuit of true love with a contemporary sensibility.🔍💼 Severance: Set within the mysterious corporate entity known as Lumon Industries, this psychological thriller immerses viewers in a hauntingly dystopian universe where employees’ lives are meticulously compartmentalized between their work and personal identities. At the heart of the story is Mark, a seemingly average office worker who undergoes a mysterious procedure called ‘severance.’ This procedure effectively splits his consciousness, allowing him to lead two separate lives: one in the office, and another in the outside world. As Mark struggles to reconcile these fractured identities, he becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue, conspiracy, and existential dread. The series delves deep into the existential questions surrounding identity, autonomy, and the nature of reality itself. Swipe to see the continuation!
