As the nation mourns Ruth Bader Ginsburg, North Shore Green Women and Chicago Women in Green gathered yesterday to celebrate her extraordinary life. Nearly 150 women virtually toured the blockbuster "Notorious RBG" exhibit hosted by the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Wilmette. While a judicial icon and vanguard of justice best known for fighting s*x discrimination and human rights - RBG was also a strong champion of environmental protection. Thank you Bernadette Marty & Bill Page from IHMEC for leading our group and highlighting the museum’s aim to inspire us to be upstanders & stand up for what we believe in. Not only does the museum’s symbolic architecture take visitors on a journey from darkness to light - we also learned about their sustainable design and LEED Gold Certification. The RBG exhibit has been extended until Jan 2021, and the museum has re-opened to the public (reservations needed). It is the world’s 3rd largest Holocaust museum which was built by the local survivor community – make sure to spend time exploring all of it.
Taking inspiration from unwavering RBG, during the cocktail hour we shared our personal efforts to rise up with upcoming election and get out the vote as if our families, communities, and humankind live on this planet in crisis. See the resulting list here: http://bit.ly/VoterTips2020 Although we are devastated by her loss, as Jaquita’s video clip pointed out, “She didn’t spend the past few years of her life fighting in pain to buy us time for you all to punk out now. Suck it up. Woman up. It’s time to work.” Let’s embrace RBG’s "belligerent optimism " and be the revolution for a better world. Don’t cry - be notorious!
In NSGW organizer Liz Kunkle’s introduction, she fondly recalled frequently seeing Justice Ginsburg and her beloved husband Marty while she attended Georgetown Law Center and shared two of her favorite RBG quotes: "So often in life, things that you regard as an impediment turn out to be great, good fortune.” & "Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
