West Coast Sixth Form
Welcome to a brand new sixth form offer for students on the West Coast of Cumbria.
Jean Pierre from the University of Cumbria visited us at Workington Academy this week to talk about what things to consider when choosing a university. It was a very informative talk, and students were able to ask any questions they may have had.
Later this term, West Coast Sixth Form will be visiting a university and taking part in UCAS workshops to support high-quality applications for students who may decide to go to university next year.
This week, representatives from our Workington Academy leading Change team attended a celebration event with the Centre for Leadership Performance, alongside other sponsors like Sellafield SIX (Social Impact multiplied).
It was fantastic to see the innovative ideas showcased by the participating schools and to connect with a variety of stakeholders about our campaign for a sustainable youth hub in Workington.
We've truly enjoyed the 12-week program and are committed to making sure our campaign remains sustainable in the long term.
Our Leading Change team met with a variety of stakeholders at our successful roll-out event this evening at the Carnegie in Workington. We shared ideas, networked with professionals from the sector, and discussed funding opportunities that might make our ideas for a space for young people in Workington sustainable. Thank you all for attending.

Students from our Leading Change Team had a great time attending the Mayor Making Ceremony for Workington's new Mayor, Neil Schofield.
We wish him all the very best in his new role!
Our Leading Change team met with Neil Schofield and Elton Bowman from Carnegie Theatre & Arts Centre to discuss ideas for our Leading Change Campaign and negotiate the use of a venue to host stakeholders and other interested parties in May.
We are going to share plans for a Hub for young people that will give them somewhere safe to go after school, where they can socialise and take part in a variety of activities.
We are excited to share our ideas!
On Friday, students from WCSF attended the UK University and Apprenticeship Fair held at Lancaster University.
They were able to meet representatives from a wide variety of universities and apprenticeship providers. They were able to attend seminars and explore the campus style university- it was a great atmosphere!
This will help them in making their decisions for their next steps after 6th form.
Year 13 Chemistry students took part in the 56th Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad competition in January. The level of question sat in the exam challenges to a very high level, way beyond their A-Level specification. We are delighted with their achievements. One student achieved a silver certificate and four students achieved a bronze certificate.
Preston was our final 'Mathematician of the Week' of the Spring term. He was nominated by Mx Finn for his sophisticated enthusiasm for mathematics; discovering and learning about interesting topics well beyond the A level syllabus.
Preston works with determination in all aspects of the Maths and Further Maths courses, always striving for an extensive understanding of the material covered. This leads to excellent quality solutions and high marks in assessed work.
In addition, Preston seeks out further resources on both related and disparate topics, to delve beyond the constraints of the A level course and practice solving problems using myriad methods and approaches chosen from his ever-increasing knowledge and skills-base. As such, he is an exemplary role-model for all our sixth form mathematics students.

📚 We've been busy this half term week showing our Dream Placement students what its like to work in a range of departments within Cumberland Council.
The Centre for Leadership's Dream Placement programme is unique from other work experience programmes as it takes students through a full application and interview process with the placement focussing on developing leadership skills.
The week concluded with our students reflecting and summarising their experience with Cumberland Council. To showcase this, they delivered a presentation on specific work tasks they had been involved with throughout the week to our Chief Executive, Andrew Seekings and our Director of Business Transformation & Change, Jo Atkinson and colleagues from the service areas they were based with.
Well done to everyone that took part in this year's Dream Placement programme! 👏
