The Basilica Cistern, located in Istanbul's historical peninsula, is a massive underground cistern built in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The Basilica Cistern is known as the largest ancient underground cistern in the world. Many of the 336 columns used in its construction are believed to have been recycled from older temples or other structures, meaning each column has its own story to tell.

Within the cistern, there are two upside-down Medusa heads. There are many legends regarding why they are there and why they are placed upside down. One theory suggests that these heads were used to ward off evil spirits.
The water for the Basilica Cistern was sourced from the Belgrade Forest, delivered via an aqueduct system.

Büyük Valide Han, built during the Ottoman period, is one of Istanbul's oldest and most historic inns. Commissioned by Valide Sultan Kösem, the mother of Sultan Murat IV, it was constructed in the early 17th century. The term "Valide" means "mother" in Turkish, often referring to the queen mother, while "Han" refers to a caravanserai or inn. This vast structure once served as accommodation and storage for merchants and their wares.

Büyük Valide Han is not only historically significant but also an architectural marvel. It surrounds a large courtyard, with rooms along its borders that once served as lodgings and storage spaces. Although it has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries, it retains its original allure.

A standout feature is its rooftop, offering a sweeping view of the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and several of Istanbul's iconic structures. This vantage point is a favorite among photographers and those seeking a unique cityscape.
Today, the Han has various functions. While parts of it serve as storage and workshops for local craftsmen, others have been repurposed into offices and businesses. Its prime location and historical feel make it a sought-after spot for both residents and visitors.

Winter is coming!

In Turkey, while soup is commonly known as a starter for lunch or dinner, it is also a part of the morning breakfast for some people in certain regions. Especially in the Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia regions, having soup for breakfast is a prevalent tradition. This habit is closely related to preferring soup as a warming start on cold winter days.

For those who start working early in the morning, a hot soup provides a source of energy and the endurance needed for the rest of the day. Various soups such as lentil, tarhana, and yayla (yogurt soup) can be preferred for breakfast. Especially during the winter months, in certain areas, street vendors or breakfast parlors serve hot soup in the early hours of the morning.

The origin of this tradition can be associated with people wanting to warm up with something hot before starting work in the cold. Alongside this tradition, the habit of having soup for breakfast in urban life is diminishing over time. However, for many, continuing this tradition remains important.

In the Ottoman Empire, coffeehouses became central to social life from the 16th century onwards. The first coffeehouse opened in istanbul in 1554 and quickly became popular. Coffeehouses were not just places to drink coffee but also venues to socialize, exchange news, play backgammon or chess, listen to traditional music, and enjoy stories told by "meddahs" (public storytellers).

The role of coffeehouses in social llife was so significant that at time they were seen as threatening by the state authority, leading to their closure. This was due to the fact that coffeehouses occasionally became centers for uprising and revolts and were hubs for intellectual exchanges.

Moving to modern-day Turkey, the coffeehouses culture still exists but has evolved. Traditional coffeehouses remain popular among the elderly, especially in small towns and neigborhoods. However, in cities, modern cafes, "third wave coffee shops", and library-concept venues are more prevalent. These places serve both for social interactions and individual activities like working or reading.

In summary, from the Ottoman era to today, the coffeehouse culture has held a significant place in Turkish social life and continues to exist in an evolved form. This evolution has been shaped by moderniaztion and globalization.

The coffeehouse in the photos still reflects traditional culture. It is often chosen as a location in many Turkish series and films. Political meetings are held there. Being located near historical sites, foreign tourists can visit and closely observe this venue, soaking in its atmosphere.
