The gavel slammed on the wood of the raised Judge’s desk, but this Wednesday, it was louder than a sonic boom inside a small closet. His eardrums were the target of the boom. He replayed it in his head over and over, the hammer falling in slow motion and the words of the Judge standing in anger as he slammed his tool of power for all to hear clearly, “You will burn in Hell, son! You better get used to those burns.” As the deputies approached to take him back into custody, he glanced around as she wagged her middle finger in his direction and kissed it in a sh*t-eating grin fashion. However, it was hard to differentiate any movement on her face. The scars had so badly decomposed her skin into a puzzle of ridges, an ocean of madness molded in, mangled, and twisted into an unsettling sight for many. The noise she spewed was a nightmarish gargle, her tongue forever entwined to her lower jaw where a lip used to be placed, now a hole with few visible teeth and a bulging tongue, grey because of the damaged, saliva dripping down onto her dress. The transparent tube she had placed in her throat that pushed oxygen into her baked lungs as quickly as her finger twisted and burned caught his eye. Another loud bang exploded in the marble and wood-endowed courtroom as Heather slammed her metal prosthetic leg across the table in front of her wheelchair. She had chosen not to have the leg fitted and carried it on her lap to get attention as her voice, now so disfigured, made her sick. Only patches of her hair remained on her forever broiled skull, skin; graph marks visible where they had patched her back together like a grizzly puzzle; in his last defiance, Brett screamed, “F**k you, Freddy!”
Man’s Ruin is an endless tale of wars, murder, and even the opposite extreme: songs, poems, and acts of bravery. “When a man loves a woman,” as the song goes, Brett was the skinny, geeky Dungeons and Dragons kid with his game dice in his pocket. The difference between Brett and your typical dork is that, in most cases, these social outcasts run in groups, not Brett. You would at first, like any of us, blame his looks and his belief in goblins and critical masters, but in this case, it was a curse from birth that, as you can imagine, runs way back. His last name was Butts. Brett Butts.
