Congratulations to Dr. Anne Barrett!

The American Sociological Association Section on Aging and the Life Course has awarded the Outstanding Publication Award to Professor of Sociology Anne Barrett, Ph.D., for her research on aging and the life course.

Her award-winning paper, “Centering Age Inequality: Developing a Sociology-of-Age Framework,” was published in 2022 in the Annual Review of Sociology.

“Building on the foundation laid by scholars of life course sociology, age studies, and gerontology, I propose a new framework for thinking about age,” Dr. Barrett said. “I provide some illustrations of ageism that could be useful and then develop my framework that describes age inequality as operating along three axes – it’s an institution, it’s a performance, and it’s an identity.”

Matthew Brooks, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida State University, co-authored “Are Rural Areas Holdouts in the Second Demographic Transition? Evidence From Canada and the United States,” published in the journal Demography. Dr. Brooks worked alongside Shelley Clark, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology at McGill University; Rachel Margolis, Ph.D., a Professor of Sociology at Western University; and Ann-Marie Helou, a doctoral student at McGill University.

The article examines how families living in rural areas of the United States are rapidly changing and increasingly becoming “untraditional” and how rural America’s declining economic profile drives these changes.

Dr. Brooks notes that this research shows that the commonly held view of rural families as being more “traditional,” might no longer hold true. “The family behaviors of rural women now more generally follow the patterns we expect from urban women, even more than the observed behaviors urban women do” Dr. Brooks explained.

Associate Professor of Sociology Michael McFarland, Ph.D., is the lead author of “Racial Slurs by Police and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms: Intrusive Policing and Perceived Injustice” published in the Journal of Urban Health. The article examines the effects that police officers’ use of slurs has on minority youth and their posttraumatic stress.

Dr. McFarland found that when minority youth who reported hearing a racial slur used by a police officer was linked to higher posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS).

Dr. McFarland encourages future researchers to conduct qualitative interviews with youth that are stopped by police. Dr. McFarland believes this can help answer some questions about the context of the racial slurs used during those police encounters.
