Oncology I - ESAVS 26/07/2024

Program Director/
Principal Course Master:
Dr. Jarno Schmidt MRCVS, DECVIM-CA (DE)

Course Masters:
Dr. Laurent Findji, DECVS (UK)
Dr. Maurice Zandvliet, DECVIM-CA (NL)

Course Overview
Over the past decade, our knowledge of cancer in animals has increased rapidly. More and more veterinarians and clients are becoming open-minded about treating canine and feline cancer patients. “Oncology I” will start with the diagnostic approach to the cancer patient, including biopsy taking, staging procedures, diagnostic imaging options as well as several practical cytology sessions. Further, there will be a detailed discussion of the 3 main treatment options (surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy) and of novel cancer drugs (e.g. tyrosine kinase inhibitors (Palladia™, Masivet™), Stelfonta™, metronomic chemotherapy). Management of side effects will be explained and safe handling of chemotherapeutic drugs will be practiced hands-on.
“Oncology I” will address neoplasms of the skin and adnexal structures in detail as they are the most common tumours in clinical practice. A major emphasis of the course will be on interactive and case oriented work using a systematic approach to the cancer patient including recognizing symptoms, interpreting radiographic findings, choosing correct staging procedures and formulating a therapeutic plan.
“Oncology I” will start from scratch and provide a very solid basis of oncological principles and skin tumours. It is ideal for veterinarians with little or no previous knowledge in veterinary oncology, but also suitable for people, who want to deepen their understanding. This course includes both medical and surgical oncology (including surgical techniques) and is therefore ideal for candidates interested in either or both.

Links between digestion, nutritient utilization and other organ systems in health and disease will be shown.
Second, we will focus on the value of the nutritional assessment of your patients. Students will learn how to obtain a complete feeding history, identify common feeding mistakes, educate owners on pros and cons of different types of feeding and resolve common myths and misunderstandings.
To achieve that, we will provide insights into pet food production, ingredients, quality management, and legal regulations. Students will learn how to evaluate commercial diets and help to owners choosing the right product for their pet, depending on breed, size, life stage, activity, etc.
We will further cover the topic of home-made diets, from raw feeding (“BARF”) to vegetarian/vegan feeding. Student will gain basic knowledge on feed science and ration calculation for health dogs and cats.
The second part of the course is dedicated to the dietary principles in most common diseases like renal insufficiency, urolithiasis, gastrointestinal problems, allergies, etc.
Practical exercises and workshops like evaluating the feeding history, Body Condition Scoring, interpretation of pet food labels etc. will be integrated every day. Case studies from various experts will be presented and evaluated with the students.

Anaesthesia - Focus On: Cardiac Anaesthesia - ESAVS 05/07/2024

Program Director/Principal Course Master:
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Eva Eberspächer-Schweda, FTA, DACVAA (AT)

Course Masters:
Dr. Aleksandr Semjonov, PhD (EE)
Dr. Laurent Locquet, MRCVS, GPCert (VC), Dipl. ECVIM-CA (UK)

Course Overview
This course is intended for all veterinarians who already perform anaesthesia in small animals and are interested in the special needs of dogs and cats with cardiac disease during anaesthesia. On the one hand, the basics such as the cardiovascular effects of anaesthetics, the most important cardiac drugs and the classic monitoring devices for monitoring the circulation are covered. On the other hand, an insight into the most important cardiological diseases and the special requirements for and during anaesthesia will be discussed.

Learning outcomes
After the course the participant is able to:
• recognise, interpret and appropriately treat the pathological deviations in vital parameters that frequently occur during anaesthesia in small animal patients
• a**lyse a poor cardiovascular condition (e.g. bradycardia or hypotension) during anaesthesia, integrate the pathophysiological background of cardiac diseases learned, derive the most probable cause for the respective conditions as well as plan and implement appropriate therapy
• identify and describe characteristics of the most important cardiac diseases in small animals and can design customised anaesthesia protocols
• describe the receptors responsible for vascular status and blood pressure, which can be used to support the cardiovascular system with a targeted strategy, and apply that knowledge in an appropriate approach during anaesthesia
• interpret the most important results of a cardiological report and use this knowledge to plan the optimal balanced anaesthesia and individually tailor the perioperative management
