We grieve for all lives lost to violence. We scoff at conspiracy theories and accusations that lack evidence. We call on the MMS to stop targeting Muslims.
Since the horrific US terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there has been a change in Western media. From that time, Muslims living in Western democracies were presented as being an 'other,' anachronistic and unwelcome. Over time, this presentation of Western Muslims as being unwelcome was justified with claims of Muslim criminality. Based on shocking crimes committed by an absolute minority,
Muslims were presented as rapists, misogynists, terrorists, and discriminatory towards other groups within our secular society. This narrative seemed convincing when every Muslim crime, or even suspected crime, was covered by mainstream news outlets. Every act of violent crime was treated as possible terrorism. Brown people were being dragged off the streets for being associated with other Muslims. The Western Ummah is under threat! It Wasn't a Muslim is a reply to this hate campaign being waged against Muslims and other minorities in Australia (particularly the Indigenous community). We highlight the poor critical thinking at the core of misrepresentation of Muslims by showing the vast numbers of non-Muslims who commit crimes commonly associated with Muslim criminality. We also highlight failings of various faiths to protect their members and the way that is being quietly accepted by the media. This page is not for the faint of heart. It is often shocking, sometimes disturbing and always disrupting. It can reveal the comedy in uninformed bigotry but also the deep failings of people of all colours and faiths within the West. Crime is sadly a reality of our society. But what this page proves, is that when crime does happen, it's not politicised if "It Wasn't a Muslim."
