Conor Rafferty, candidate for Mid Ulster, repeal abortion act

This is it. I've been building an online political tribe for years now, since I started wholesale adding people who shared my views on Irish politics on Facebook.

However after I put my name forward for election in 2019 I started looking for a local tribe (I stood in Mid Ulster) and found that it was easy to add people from the other end of the country but people I found online locally seemed to be very coy about accepting my requests.

Anyway I persevered, and tried where possible to meet people in person. One in particular has gone on to be a firm friend, and we even shared an apartment together for a while last year. You can imagine how great it is to come home and have someone to chat with whose vision of the world overlaps plenty with your own.

Through my campaign in 2019 I picked up local contacts by knocking on doors. People were delighted to know there was someone about who saw the world the same way. I hosted walks for my tribe and introduced them to one another. It was great.

We may not see eye to eye and there may be a hundred better 2.0 tribesmen at the other end of the country, but that's it, they're at the other end of the country, so they're not really your local people. With your local people you can actually get stuff done and have an impact on each other's REAL life (as opposed to ONLINE life).

Due to circumstances beyond my control I have been unable to mount a campaign in Mid Ulster for the NI Assembly election which begins later today, and therefore I withdraw.

My name will still appear on the ballot as it's too late to get it taken off.
