An engineer wonders, why FEA software needs material properties to be supplied, when the need is only normal stress in linear elastic simulation. Of course it may be not needed to use FEA software for such calculations, but let's say it was surprising to the engineer.

From the engineers perspective under linear elastic limits the normal stress is just load divided by the resisting area, remember the change in area doesn't alter the stress field here.

Further, why FEA packages even needs to use hooks law, which works relating stress with strain. Then, calculate stress from strain? Why strain has to be calculated when the desired result does not need such calculation?
Why can't the FEA package take easier routes?

More over if the analyst is forced by the software to provide the material detail, will any arbitrary values work?

Our first thought is, ofcourse FEA software are meant for complex simulations that is when simple routes are not readily available.

Second, all real world objects are made of some or other materials, so there is no wonder why FEA software is asking for it 😀.

But are there further interesting reasons behind, why this approach is being used?

Share your thoughts.

Funny but insightful words on importance of validating simulations...

"Everybody believes experimental results except the one who did it.

Nobody believes simulation results expect the one who did it...!!!"

Stress Analysis of a Pressure Vessel using Calculix | | using Open Source Software |

Watch this Video on 👉YouTube https://youtu.be/rG08-6p9qPI

Engineering Stress analysis using open source software Calculix and GMSH.
This Video shows how to perform stress analysis on a 1/4th models of a pressure vessel subject to internal pressure.

Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for the structural analysis.

Software Used:
GMSH is used for geometric modelling and Meshing.
FEA solving and post processing.

The extensive post processing of results using stress linearization or direct comparison approach is NOT covered in this video.

Failure Analysis of Laptop Desk with Freecad FEM | Freecad Fem | Product Design | Stress Analysis |

This Video shows how a real life failure of a product (laptop desk) can be
modeled using FEA and identify the critical locations.

The Analysis was carried out completely in Freecad FEM workbench.
Freecad was used to model the geometry. The model was simplified,
capturing only the necessary features to identify the critical
locations, which can eventually fail. The dimensions does not represent
the actual desk.

Free cad allows meshing through GMSH or Netgen. For this analysis
Netgen was used. Tetrahedral meshing was done with medium resolution.
The material selected was ABS plastic. Material properties was chosen
from FreeCad material library.

A dummy load of 70N was applied (in reality the load was not instantaneous
so it can be approximated as Static Load) and initially the face at the end
of the legs were fixed as Boundary conditions and analyzed. The results were not as correct. As an improvement in BC the inner edges of the legs were fixed and analyzed. The results were correct and reflected the reality in identifying the critical Locations.

It was observed that the horizontal movement of the leg is higher which causes high moment load to the leg and pad interface. Hence a horizontal member was added to limit the movement.

However the analysis has provided a deep insight to explore other design options of the desk to improve its strength for resisting any accidental overload.

Static and Modal analysis of a Bladed Disk using GMSH and Calculix || CAE4U || Calculix || GMSH

This video explains how to perform a Static structural and modal analysis of bladed disc using open source finite element analysis software.

This geometry does not represent any actual product. This analysis was done just to show how open source finite element analysis software
can be used for this kind of analysis.
The analysis is essentially 3D cyclic-symmetric analysis.

30 degrees Sector model of bladed disc configuration is considered for the analysis.
Uniform 2D structured mesh is used for this study.
structured Quadrilateral elements were used for better performance.

This analysis can be used to check the static strength, deformation and potential resonance.
The analysis considered only centrifugal load.

The mode shaped of a cyclic structural model is characterized by Harmonic index.

The results from modal analysis can be used to construct the Campbell diagram (some time called as Safe/Interference Diagram)
to check any possible resonance condition.

In this case the prestress effect is not considered.

For the study following open source software used,
Geometric Modelling and meshing - GMSH (https://gmsh.info/ )
Pre and post processing - CALCULIX CGX (http://www.dhondt.de)
Solving - CALCULIX CCX

Modal Analysis of Circular Shell in Calculix || Natural Frequency and Mode shape || Mesh Sensitivity || Open source software

Hi Everyone,

This video explains how to perform a modal analysis of circular shell using open source finite element analysis software .

The analysis is essentially 2D.

Circular shell with clamped edge configuration is considered.
Uniform 2D structured mesh is used for this study.
structured Quadrilateral elements were used for better performance.

The results are compared with the theoretically available solutions and also the effect of mesh refinement was also studied.

Three different mesh grades are used and it was observed the finer meshing yields better results.

For the study following open source software used,
Geometric Modelling and meshing - GMSH
Pre and post processing - CALCULIX CGX
Solving - CALCULIX CCX
