Congratulations to my dear and brilliant friend, the Honorable Alice Oliver-Parrott being honored as 2024 Champions of Justice.

Along with numerous awards and distinquished honors in her career, in 2019, Judge Alice Oliver-Parrott received the prestigious Lifetime of Excellence in Advocacy Award from the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists. The award recognized her distinguished career as a trial lawyer, trial judge, Chief Justice of the First Court of Appeals, and now, mediator and arbitrator. Consistently, listed in Best Lawyers in America and as a Texas Monthly “Super Lawyer,” Judge Oliver-Parrott has received numerous awards including the Outstanding Civil Trial Judge by the Texas Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists Association, the Texas Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Texas Chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the Outstanding Young Lawyer of Texas by the State Bar of Texas.

What an exciting week at the University of Texas @ Austin collaborating and working closely with the prestigious Texas Executive Education Program, offered by the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, the National Structured Settlement Association (NSSTA) leaders and fellow industry colleagues and students.

It has been an amazing and humbling experience that allowed me to craft and present the Case Studies for the Certified Structured Settlement Consultant (CSSC) designation course in partnership with the Texas Executive Education Program, offered by the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. It is an honor working with the students, and I'm proud to contribute to their journey in achieving their CSSC certification! 🎓📚🤘 🧡

Ever had one of those "Aha moments"? A moment of sudden realization, insight, inspiration, recognition or comprehension?
Today was one of those for me. The realization and remembrance of what changed the direction of my life's path.

This morning, I was assigned to a wrongful death case of a husband and father. While talking with the widow regarding their settlement plan, she mentioned she understands structured settlements because she has a structured settlement from a settlement when she was injured as a minor. I inquired on a question which immediately triggered that I knew the case. And, I remember the case well. It was 35 years ago while I was a legal assistant to the late Joe Jamail. I have no idea how I recalled the broker on the case and the life company off the top of my head except for the fact that the case was very close to me.

I had aspirations and dreams of being a medical doctor and was going to school while working for Mr Jamail. After working on the case for two years, I recall being offered a full time position for Mr Jamail. Of course, I accepted.

That case. That decision. That change. All led to the path to start my structured settlement company and career 8 years later at the encouragement and support of Mr Jamail and Janet Hansen and our amazing Jamail Team. I realized my love and appreciation for the law and protecting and working with injured victims and their families. I knew then that I wanted to be apart of that world.

An "Aha moment" of remembering how one detail and decision can completely change the direction of one's life and path.

If you and/or your spouse are planning your retirement and the age you will start Social Security, I strongly recommend that you fully understand your options, most especially if you plan to continue work, even part time work.

When you’re receiving Social Security benefits before FRA, while also working, as you may know, there’s an earnings limit — specifically impacting your benefit while you’re younger than your Full Retirement Age (FRA). For 2022, the annual limit is $19,560, and for every $2 over the limit, Social Security will withhold $1 from your benefits.

If you started too early, it may not be too late to change.

If before FRA, there is no longer an earnings limit, but prior to FRA, know how the math works.

Today wraps up the Inaugural AASC Conference.
