Poetry: Freshman Fall
This poetry is a short expression of a need that is burning inside of most people. The need, is to be fulfilled and fulfillment is a constant journey. There are many paths to the end result but we often travel down the path that appears most appealing. Of course, if two roads lead to gold, one is straight and playfully lighted with sunshine. The other black as night with no moon and riddled with twists. Most will pick the path with the sun. It looks more safe. The dark path is likely the hold more adversity and it may instill some fear at first and second glance.

The poetry is the dark and twisty path. The use of education is metaphoric and actual. When people are required to look inside in order to diagnose a problem, things get complicated and scary. This poem not only requires a look inside but it also is demanding research in order to gain knowledge of one’s self. The leaning, retaining and later, applying the information is key to living a happy organic life. There is fun play on course names, numbers and rhyme scheme. Yancey ends the poem with verification that this poem is in fact, the beginning of a series.

This poem is unrestricted in form. It is full of statements that hold weight and are placed together in a way that is hopeful to make the reader feel a connection. The poem is short and by no means sweet. It is telling of experience and misconceptions that revealed themselves over the years.
This poem is written to a child, turned survivor. It is full of hard truths, hard surfaces, hard landings but the ending is just the beginning.
