Today's a special day because it's the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark law was a game-changer, banning discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, like jobs, schools, transportation, and any public or private place open to the general public. The ADA has been a cornerstone in ensuring people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

But the impact of the ADA didn't stop at the U.S. borders. It sparked a global movement for disability rights, leading to similar legislation around the world. For example, the United Kingdom rolled out the Disability Discrimination Act in 1995, and Australia followed with its own Disability Discrimination Act in 1992. These laws, inspired by the ADA, have helped make the world a more inclusive and accessible place, promoting equal opportunities and tackling discrimination. So, let's celebrate the ADA and its huge role in shaping a fairer, more inclusive world for everyone!

At the center, there's a large text reading "Happy Birthday ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act" in a mix of red, white, and blue colors on a dark background. Surrounding this central text are various images of people with disabilities: a man in a wheelchair, a child using a prosthetic leg, a person with a guide dog, a woman in a library, a young girl using a laptop, and several other individuals in diverse settings showcasing different aspects of accessibility and inclusion. The borders of the image feature repeated smaller texts of "ADA Americans with Disabilities Act" in alternating red and blue fonts. The collage highlights the diversity and achievements of the disability community in honor of the ADA's anniversary.]

Today marks the 34th anniversary of the USA's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA has not only transformed the lives of people with disabilities in the USA but has also promoted greater accessibility, inclusion, and rights for people with disabilities around the world. Here are some important ways the ADA has impacted the lives of people with disabilities and their families in countries around the world:

šŸ”µ Legislation: The ADA has served as a blueprint for disability rights legislation in other countries. Nations have adopted similar laws and policies to promote accessibility and prevent discrimination against people with disabilities.

šŸ”µ Advocacy: The ADA has inspired and empowered disability rights activists worldwide. Advocacy groups in various countries have used the ADA as a benchmark to push for similar protections and accommodations in their legal systems.

šŸ”µ Standards and Practices: The ADA has influenced global standards for accessibility, encouraging international organizations, businesses, and governments to adopt best practices in building design, transportation, and public services.

šŸ”µ Awareness and Attitudes: The ADA has contributed to raising awareness about disability rights and the importance of inclusion on a global scale. This has led to greater societal collaboration with people with disabilities.

šŸ”µ Technology and Innovation: The ADA has spurred technological advancements in assistive devices and accessible technology, which have been adopted and further developed by other countries. This has improved the quality of life for people with disabilities worldwide.

šŸ”µ Educational Opportunities: The ADAā€™s emphasis on inclusive education has influenced global educational practices, leading to greater inclusion of students with disabilities in schools and universities.

šŸ”µ Employment Practices: The ADAā€™s employment provisions have set an example for workplace inclusion, encouraging international companies to implement similar practices and policies to accommodate employees with disabilities.

šŸ”µ Cross-Border Collaboration: The ADA has fostered international collaboration and knowledge-sharing among disability rights organizations, researchers, and policymakers, promoting a global exchange of ideas and solutions.

šŸ”µ Human Rights Framework: The principles of the ADA have been incorporated into international human rights frameworks, such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which has been ratified by many countries.

šŸ”µ Travel and Tourism: The ADAā€™s impact on accessible travel and tourism has influenced global standards, leading to more accessible destinations and accommodations for travelers with disabilities.

Hey folks,

I wanted to get your thoughts on something...

A while back, I suggested adding an extra newsletter each month, changing our current monthly format to a fortnightly one. Most of you preferred sticking with the monthly schedule, so I shelved the idea.

However, we also have a Patreon page, mainly used by businesses to advertise their products and services to our community. We offer a ā€œFriends of TWIA (The World is Accessible)ā€ option for $2.99 per month, which supports our work and the newsletter.

Iā€™m thinking about revisiting the idea of an additional newsletter but making it available exclusively to our Patreon supporters. This way, Patreon supporters get something extra, and those who prefer the current monthly newsletter arenā€™t overwhelmed with more emails.

This additional edition would be shorter and focused on specific tips, advice, and deals exclusive to our community. For example, I could work on getting discount offers on rental properties or hotel stays just for our Friends of TWIA members.

What do you think? Would you be interested in receiving this extra edition via Patreon?

Iā€™d love to hear your thoughts!

Cheers,
Anthony
