Olympic Games ....... a history of Team St Lucia
In 2020 Makeba was elected as the Public Relations Officer of the St Lucia Athletics Association. She will serve for the next two years. The Saint Lucia Athletics Association is the governing body for the promotion and development of track and field in Saint Lucia. Makeba believes that her contribution to athletics will be more meaningful if she can assist in developing strategies to assist athletes as well as the important running of the national association.
Makeba is also the current secretary of the newly formed St Lucia Athletes Commission, with the aim of assisting athletes in having a voice and say on the national federations. She is committed to serving her community and believes in the development of sporting talent on the island and volunteers her time with a select group of athletes to hone their skills and talents. Makeba, a recently qualified level one athletics coach has been a volunteer coach for roughly eight years. She developed a love for coaching when she herself was an athlete in college and helped coach young athletes in the community. She now coaches local athletes as part of her efforts to give back to the sport that gave so much to her.
Makeba has been involved in athletics for 20years. First as an athlete, and now as a coach and administrator. In the year 2009, she was recruited by the University of Arkansas where she also successfully graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology. Over the years, Makeba has participated in the pentathlon and heptathlon, setting a number of records both as a junior and a senior. In 2013, she was named St Lucia’s Sportswoman of the Year and Arkansas’s Female Student Athlete of the Year. She was also the NCAA Field Athlete of the Year for outdoor and indoor events. She was the first St. Lucian combined events athlete to qualify for global competition when she qualified for the 2013 World Championships. During her college years, she was an eight-time All-American, four-time SEC champion, and NCAA pentathlon record holder.
