After losing both her mum and grandma to cancer and discovering that she had a BRCA2 gene, which left her with a high chance of contracting breast cancer herself, at the age of just 25 Fole took the courageous decision to have a double mastectomy.
The surgery has reduced Fole's risk of contracting breast cancer to around five percent – and as one of our Tickled Pink Real Self Checkers she wants to share her experience both to honour her mum, Esther, and grandma, Mary, and to help other people with the BRCA gene. She said: "For so long I didn't want to check myself because of the thought of what if I find something, which is obviously the wrong mentality to have. I think if I'd seen a campaign like this with someone talking about their family risk I'd have seen it's a real privilege to be able to catch these things early if they're there at all. You owe it to yourself and the people around you to make sure you honour your body by getting it checked and dealing with it." Read Fole's story here: https://bit.ly/49c1Mpx
Thirteen-year-old Callum formed a close bond with colleagues at our Coventry store when he used to call in do the big shop while his mum Mandi was having chemotherapy for breast cancer – and now she's on the mend everyone's so proud of him for the way he's getting behind the store's Tickled Pink fundraising efforts.
When the store's community champion Lynda asked for volunteers to help with a bucket collection for our charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! Callum and Mandi were among the first to put their names down. And Callum enjoyed it so much he came back the following day to help some more. Lynda said: "He was a little star. All our colleagues and customers praised him for his kindness and for being so polite. He was just so helpful."
Mandi said: "Throughout the whole of my treatment Callum's been an absolute star, he really has. When I couldn't do my shopping, because I wasn't allowed to because of my chemotherapy, he would come in every week for months and that's how he knows a lot of the colleagues. They all kept an eye out for him, and were amazing with him." Mandi, who's a nurse, added: "Tickled Pink is amazing. It's lovely that Asda supports it. Fundraising for a cause like that is so close to my heart." Read their story here: https://bit.ly/40bvdUu
We're bringing back our Winter Warmers £1 meal deal in Asda Cafes – offering people aged 60 and over the chance to enjoy soup, a roll and unlimited tea and coffees for just £1.
The offer is available all day, every day from November 1 until February 28 and will run alongside the Kids eat for £1 offer which continues to be hugely popular, with more than 2.6 million meals served since its launch in June last year. Kris Comerford, our Chief Commercial Officer, said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income. Last year we served over 650,000 meals to the over 60s in two months, by bringing the initiative back for 2023 and extending it until February we hope it will prove just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most.”
Selected Asda stores also run a Community Cuppa campaign in their cafes, creating space for community groups who may otherwise struggle to meet due to rental costs or high energy costs. Spaces will be available on weekdays in November and December from 2pm to 6pm and all community group members who visit will receive unlimited free tea or coffee.
A huge thank you to all our generous customers, colleagues and volunteers who've been supporting our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign throughout October.
Colleagues have taken part in a range of fundraising activities – dying their hair pink, shaving their heads, waxing their legs and joining in with cycling, running and walking challenges, as well as arranging bucket collections, tombolas and cake sales. And lots of customers have been posting on social media to raise awareness of the campaign when buying limited edition products including pink versions of Diet Coke, Warburtons and Shreddies and our range of clothes from George at Asda. Tickled Pink, which raises money and awareness for Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!, is the longest running corporate charity partnership, raising more than £82 million over the last 27 years for world-class research, life-changing support and vital breast awareness information. A huge well done to vigilant colleague Lesley who stopped one of our Newark store's older customers being taken advantage of in a voucher scam.
The lady came into the store to buy £1,000 worth of vouchers, which Lesley immediately thought was suspicious. The customer had received what appeared to be a message from her sister-in-law saying that they'd won a considerable amount of money. Alongside the message from her sister-in-law, the customer had received another message from a man saying that in order to receive the money she'd have to buy and send over the details from the vouchers. The customer allowed Lesley to look at the messages and she soon realised that although the messages looked legitimate, the page displaying the winning money was only created the previous day and that it was indeed fake. Lesley, who won an Asda service superstar gold award for her actions, said: "I was just doing my job and looking out for the customer". The store's community champion Sinead said: "You sometimes hear really sad stories of people being taken in by these scams, so it's great that Lesley was able to prevent that happening here. It's an amazing thing that Lesley has done – we're all so proud of her."
Our much-loved colleague John has ticked off a major milestone on his mission to visit all 644 Asda stores across the UK – calling in at his 200th store, Asda Killingbeck in Leeds.
John, who's autistic and works at our Arrowe Park store, was greeted with a round of applause and a display of balloons as he entered the store. He was accompanied by our Arrowe Park store's community champion Ian, who said: "John has a passion for visiting our stores around the country and reports back on what he finds. A big thank you goes to community champion Lisa from our Killingbeck store who made his arrival at his 200th store one to remember." Read more here: https://bit.ly/47ZTsZh
Stacey Solomon fans got to meet and chat to the TV star when she visited our Milton Keynes store to launch her new collection, "At Home with Stacey Solomon Exclusively for George Home".
We created a replica of her home, Pickle Cottage, in our store to showcase the range and the first 50 customers received a free goody bag too. Our store's community champion Suzannah said: "It was such a pleasure meeting her. She was amazing."

She said: "Well, never did I think on a Thursday morning I'd be having a chinwag with Stacey Solomon over the phone 😂♥️🥰 awwwwww she's so lovely! She's basically my best pal now that we've spoken 😂, talking about me having twins and two older kids."
Everyone at our Quedgeley store in Gloucester is so proud of inspirational colleague Zhanai who's become a valued part of the team since she started working there five years ago.
Twenty-eight-year-old Zhanai – who's autistic, has special needs and suffers from epilepsy – has gained a huge amount of confidence since joining the store and always goes to work with a smile on her face. She said: "I like being a part of team with other colleagues. I’ve made loads of friends here and I get on with everyone really well." Her mum Sharon said she was immensely proud of her daughter: "I've always told her to always believe in herself and nothing is impossible. Asda have been amazing and really supported her. We said goodbye to our fabulous checkouts colleague Heather who has retired from our Elgin store at the age of 80.
Colleagues decorated her till on her last day and Kaye, the store's customer trading manager, said: "We hope you have many amazing adventures on your retirement Heather.
