From our friendly residential arborist friend Cameron Scott Bartlett Tree Experts

Hey Everyone! It’s been a while since my last post! As you know, this past summer has left many of our local trees in distress. The extreme heat and drought has taken a toll and now secondary invaders have moved in and are now feeding on our trees.

Trees in distress emit a chemical compound called ethylene, which is an alcohol. Many insects are naturally attracted to ethylene- things like butterflies, wasps, etc. However, one such group of insects, called wood-boring beetles, or borers, are tree killers. Borers work by landing on a tree in distress. They lay eggs on or just under the bark and their larvae begin to feed on the cambium layer of the tree. The cambium layer is the layer responsible for movement of nutrients and sugars up and down the tree, and once enough larvae feeding occurs this transport layer gets interrupted. Once that happens the tree is no longer able to feed itself and death occurs.

So what are signs that you have a tree infested with borers? Unfortunately, the warning signs can be difficult to notice until it’s too late. You might see “weeping,” when sap seems to be leaking from a tree’s trunk and branches. You might also notice small exit holes peppered throughout the trunk, where beetle larvae have emerged as adult beetles. Large branches may start to die suddenly, giving off a “flagging” effect.

So is there an answer if your tree is infested? Maybe. It really just depends on the extent of the infestation and the amount you’re willing to invest in the tree. There are multiple treatment options available, each one coming with advantages and disadvantages. Consult with a trusted arborist to see which route is best for you.

Attached here to this post are photos I’ve taken over the past 2-3 weeks. These are trees that I’ve found actively feeding borer larvae. I’ve found them in red oaks, silver maples, and pecans. Though I’m sure things are not limited to those 3 species.

As always, don’t hesitate to comment down below or send me a direct message if you have specific questions about your trees at home.

As we move into the next fall months, it’s time to start to think about trimming your trees as the temperatures start to go down. Oaks in particular will start to be weighed down with acorns and humidity from cooler temps, and this is going to put strain into branches that are growing more horizontally.

Fall is also a great time to get going on a fertilization plan for your trees. Over time, especially after such a dry summer, soils become nutrient deficient due to a lack of nutrient cycling. In a forest environment nutrients are returned to the soil through rotting logs and leaf litter. However in our lawns that cycling isn’t occurring because whenever there’s a mess (fallen leaves, broken branches, etc) it’s quickly cleaned up.

To set up an estimate please call 817-862-3491 or 817-986-2318. Let's get your property presentable and safe for the winter months!
