Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) or being 'double jointed' is often hereditary and can be caused by a defect in a protein called collogen, a key component in ligaments which function in joint stability.
Ligamentous laxity is beneficial in specific fields, such as dancers, gymnasts, and musicians and can be achieved is your not born with JHS.
However, it is important to take care of your body. JHS can often increase risk of injury is not managed.
Do I have JHS?
-The Beighton Scoring System measures joint hypermobility on a 9-point scale. The joints assessed are:
~Knuckle of both little/fifth/pinkie ~fingers
~Base of both thumbs
~Elbows
~Knees
~Spine
Hakim and Grahame, 2003 put together 5 questions as a quick check for JHS.
Can you now/ever:
1) place your hands flat on the floor without bending your knees?
2) bend your thumb to touch your forearm?
3) As a child, did you amuse your friends by contorting your body into strange shapes or could you do the splits?
4) As a child or teenager, did your kneecap or shoulder dislocate on more than one occasion?
5)Do you consider yourself “double-jointed”?
Answering YES to 2 of these questions suggests JHS.
What can massage do?
-Help to soothe sore muscles without putting pressure on joints
-encourage release of endorphins to relieve pain.
-can give a more restful sleep
-Help to replenish connective tissue through increasing blood circulation.

A joint sprain is the overstretching or tearing of ligaments. (Ligaments are a tissue which connect bones together in a joint). Ankles are a very commonly sprained joint.
Common symptoms of sprains:
• bruising
• pain around the joint
• swelling
• limited flexibility
• Limited range of movement.
A joint strain is the overstretching or tearing of muscles or tendons (connect bones to muscles). The hamstrings are commonly strained.
Common symptoms of strains:
• muscle spasm
• pain around the affected joint
• swelling
• limited flexibility
• Limited range of movement
Your Thumb, knee, wrist, back and ankle are the more commonly sprained/strained joints.
If you think you have a mild strain or sprain, many people find applying ice to relieve swelling helpful for the first 24/48 hours post injury.
A mild injury can heal in 2-3 days, a moderate injury can take about a week. For severe ruptures, your GP, physiotherapist, massage therapist etc. can work together to build a plan to get you out and about ASAP.
Prevention:
-Stretch before and after a workout
-Exercising a little and often is better then the rare big effort
-Massage, keep your muscles relaxed and ready for anything.
Use of sports massage when treating a strain or sprain.
By increasing blood flow, the recovery and rehabilitation process can occur at a faster rate. Blood flow into the muscles is vital in creating new tissue, used to mend the damage caused by the strain or sprain. Having a massage can also help relieve the pain from spasms and cramps that can occur after a strain or sprain.

What to expect when booking a sports massage with me at the body dynamics and what can you do beforehand to get the most out of your session.
How to get the most out of your massage? Massages are taxing on your body. Drinking lots of water leading up to your massage helps your body deal with the toxins massage will release, letting you enjoy the massage without feeling washed out afterwards.
Dress for comfort. Putting restrictive clothes back on after a massage isn’t always ideal, baggy shorts, tracksuit, trainers and a t-shirt might not be your normal style but comfort is key to keeping relaxed after a massage.
Don’t worry! Therapists want you to be comfortable and relaxed above anything else. Whether that’s staying dressed or letting your therapist know they could use more pressure or the technique they're using really doesn't work for you, we would much rather know, so we can adapt your treatment to suit you better.
Sports massage is able to release muscle tension, improve circulation, encourage removal of waste products such as lactic acid and give you some time to relax your body.
Sports massage uses a wide range of techniques such as; effleurage, kneading, wringing, tapotement, stretching and trigger pointing across the body for overall benefit or area specific if treating an injury.
After discussing your expectations for the session a postural exam or specific tests may be carried out. Aftercare advice is given after every treatment to help you get the most out of every session.

Lateral epicondylitis or commonly know 'tennis elbow'.
Tennis elbow is normally caused by overusing the muscles attached to your elbow used to flex and extend your wrist. Pain will be felt near the bony lump (the lateral epicondyle) on the outside of your elbow and can run down the forearm.
Tennis elbow can improve on it's own but massage can be used to speed up the process, relaxing and releasing muscle tension through the shoulder, upper and lower arm and into the hand. Increasing blood flow through the area can have an anti-inflammatory effect, relieve pain and speed up recovery. Massage can also be used to increase your range of movement and mobility at the shoulder, elbow and wrist.

I often have people come in with Sciatic pain. Massage is a great option to ease discomfort from sciatic pain.
Sciatica refers to pain, tingling, weakness, burning or numbness through the leg.
Caused by injury to or pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can occur at the roots of the sciatic nerve L4-S3 or down the sciatic nerve in the leg.
Sciatica is a symptom rather then a condition. Thus working out the reason for the pain can help in treatment or prevention of future recurring pain.
Men between 30 and 50 years of age are more likely to have sciatica.
Massage can be used to:
- Relax tight muscles
- Improve blood circulation
- Reduce stress
- Release endorphins
- promote improved healing environment

Our posture or how we hold our body is unique to everyone. People often refer to posture as 'good' and 'bad'. Making sure we use our body safely when sitting, moving or lifting is really important in preventing pain and injury.
Posture can influence breathing, energy levels and how confident you fell. Poor posture often causes stiffness or pain across the shoulders, back and neck.
Our posture or how we hold our body is unique to everyone. However, there are 'good' and 'bad' postures. Making sure we use our body safely when sitting, moving or lifting is really important in preventing pain and injury.
Posture can influence breathing, energy levels and how confident you fell. Poor posture often causes stiffness or pain across the shoulders, back and neck.
Massage helps loosen tight muscles and release muscle tension. Allowing the muscle to be more elastic and stretch.
Massage can allow you joints to move through a greater angle, often reduced by the tight muscles from poor posture and improve circulation which upper energy levels.
'Poor' posture is often presents as a hunch or slouching, which can decrease lung capacity.
Massage can help enable you to alter your posture, which would increase lung capacity and ease of breath, reduce back and neck pain. Give you higher energy and confidence levels and allow you to see effect of posture on your overall health.
Book your massage with me on 07311 278771. I start every session with a postural assessment and can offer some tips, tricks and stretches to help your with your posture.
Having a massage can make you feel relaxed but your body needs time to relax and recover.
Keep that post massage feeling by:
-drinking plenty of water, helping your kidneys deal with the toxins released from the massage and keep the headache away.
-Avoid alcohol, caffeine and strenuous exersise such as going to the gym or doing manual labour, for 12-24 hours
-Eat light meals, going for a huge roast straight after a massage can make you feel bloated.
-Stay in the shade. Your body works hard in a massage and can often be dehydrated. Keeping out of the hot sun is a good way to prevent headaches after a massage.
Relax and enjoy that post massage feeling.

Meet the therapist
Hi! My name is Imogen Stubbs and I am the sports masseuse at The Body Dynamics. I became interested in the biomechanics of the human body through a love of riding horses. I quickly learnt that to have good performance, not only did I need control of my muscles and balance to allow me to make tiny movements but any asymmetry or tension in my body transmitted to my horse and limited my performance.
I am now training to become an Osteopath by studying a part time masters degree with the London School of Osteopathy. Osteopathy has furthered my knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and bodywork techniques.
I work from the therapy room at Amazon Gym in Shropham, which is a great gym, with state of the art equipment and the friendliest atmosphere.
In my spare time I compete with my horse, Fergie in British dressage and cross country.
