MISERY [ miz-uh-ree ]

1. wretchedness of condition or circumstances.
2. great mental or emotional distress; extreme unhappiness.
3. a cause or source of distress.

If you want to feel pretty horrible most of the time, there are some tried and true ways to make sure you will.

Base your worth and value on THE STUFF THAT YOU HAVE. Anything works here-- if you feel good about yourself because you happen to drive a nice car, live in a rockin' house or look really great in jeans, you are good to go. The inverse is also true: if you feel worthless because of your sub-par living conditions or bad hair year, you are also in great shape, because you are letting THINGS determine YOUR value. This is a very effective way to feel bad about yourself most of the time.

Another way to increase your stress is to attach your value on ACHIEVEMENTS or ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Make sure that advanced degrees, Academy Awards, number of followers and likes define your worth and feelings of being good enough. And make sure to let your failures, high school GPA and failed Facebook posts define your value.

Finally, base your self esteem on what your kids, spouse, or family members do.

That's all there is to it! Truth: the stuff you have will come and go.

If your worth comes from anything temporary it will always be accompanied by some level by anxiety and fear because of the unpredictability of life. When you allow any of these things to determine your value in any way shape or form, your feelings of worth to be fleeting at best.

What you and others live in, drive around or fit into is all very transient and temporary, and have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR WORTH.

What then can you then anchor to in this crazy world? Here it is. Read it carefully and then read it again.

Your worthiness and value as a person is established and immutable. You are of infinite worth and value. You are unique and one of a kind, and extremely worthy of love and every good thing. Nothing that you could EVER say or do would ever change that truth. Nothing.

Do we want to always strive to do better and be better? Yes! But your value doesn't come from there. The reason that you should ever be interested in changing your behavior is because what you do or don't do will affect the quality of your life experience and your ability to FEEL your value and that of others more keenly day to day.

If you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or are barely making it through the day here is what you do: take a deep breath. Take another but this time even deeper and lower. Good work. Your body's stress response is already dropping.

Now, if you are anywhere near people that you adore, put down your phone and hug them. Tell them that you are grateful that they are in your life. Don't talk yourself out of this, or tell yourself you will do it later. Do it now. Barriers down, heart open. Oxytocin dump #1.

Next gather your people and say a prayer or moment of silence, and send love and healing to the hundreds of thousands of people who are grieving all over the earth right now. They are your extended human family and they need this. So do you. Oxytocin dump #2.

Bonus round for a full amygdala soothing reset (btw this is a good thing): Drench yourself in gratitude that for this moment you are surrounded by miracles, whether you see them or not.
