In celebration of what would have been Melvin Van Peebles’ 92nd birthday, Lincoln Center presents: MVP, a multimedia tribute concert experience created by his son Mario Van Peebles.

Mario takes the audience through a glimpse into Melvin’s life and fascinations in the desert and cities through MVP’s films and music. The evening is scored by the soul-jazz-hip-hop-funk fusion collective—and regular Van Peebles collaborators—Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber. (That’s us!)

Over the past half century, the Van Peebles have become established as undeniable Hollywood royalty. The trailblazing work of director Melvin Van Peebles (Story of a Three Day Pass, Watermelon Man, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song) made him an iconoclastic legend and one of the most influential filmmakers of the 1970’s. Melvin’s son, Mario Van Peebles, followed in that estimable tradition, creating and starring in the era-defining gangster movie, New Jack City. Mario recently directed his own son, Mandela, opposite himself in the sharply observed western Outlaw Posse.

Burnt Sugar SmokeHouse artist spotlight - Miss Olithea is a singer, songwriter, producer, and sound healing practitioner. She is a native New Yorker who by the age of 18 has performed at every major concert hall in NYC. She received her BFA from the Hartt School in musical theater. Some of her favorite credits include Millie Christine McKoy’s Syncopated Sonnets at the Lannan Foundation, The Afrofuturism Festival at Carnegie Hall, JAM Performance MoMA residency, Maroon and Suffragettes: a Tribute to Greg Tate. Olithea is a proud member of the World renowned Burnt Sugar Arkestra Chamber. Olithea has also released her music Long Day’s Journey (2016) and To Be Seen and Heard (2017) Since those releases, Olithea has deepened her practice in meditation and experimental music. With the use of vocal loops, fx, and sound bowls she channels spirit that calms the heart and eases the mind. In 2022 she released Cosmic Church (2022), a live meditation EP. Miss Olithea also is a voice teacher and in November 2020 she started her own private studio The Vocal Journey. Olithea finds true delight in training singers in evidence-based techniques for a lifetime of healthy singing.

Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, founded by Greg Tate and co-led with Jared Michael Nickerson is a sprawling band of NYC-area players whose prodigious chops allow them to open the AstroBlack stargates to a darkly energetic & celestial realm of cosmic riddim, esoteric rambunction, and eclectic blue cheer!

In 2024 The Burnt Sugar Arkestra is celebrating twenty five years of “never playing anything the same way once.”

As founding member Greg Tate used to say “BSAC is a territory band, a neo-tribal thang, a community hang, a society music guild aspiring to the condition of all that is molten, glacial, racial, spacial, oceanic, mythic, antiphonal and telepathic.”

This Thursday May 9th, I will be presenting a reunion of my Juba Lee 4tet — the version that created a powerful performance at the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Israel last year, before all hell broke loose. These guys are a blast to play with and we’re looking forward to sharing the stage together again.
We will play a short, but intense set of original music as part of a Burnt Sugar Arkestra SMOKEHOUSE event at Bowery Electric that features a number of great bands and culminates with a set by the Arkestra conducted by Vernon Reid.

Burnt Sugar SmokeHouse Artist Highlight: B-Mack
B-MACK is a 6-piece American Alternative Soul and Rock band from New York City. Formed in 2017 out of jam sessions with bassist Michael Cox and a need to record a few new ideas, the band centers around the songwriting of vocalist/keyboardist Bruce Mack ,noting influences that include Hugh Masekela, Steppenwolf and Funkadelic.
B-MACK has a rotating group of players featuring guitarists Ben Tyree & Kelvyn Bell, drummers Chris Eddleton, Bill McClellan & Will Calhoun, keyboardist Leon Gruenbaum, trumpeter Sharif Kales and bassist Michael Cox. Mack often includes the West African percusion ensemble Nubian Messengers for more expressive presentations. In March of 2024, the band released 2 singles, Silent Witness and Duckgrease Burning at the Crabhouse.
