Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or : sunday

A busy weekend at the Circuit Dijon Prenois was concluded with another successful day of racing. The first order of business was the one-hour Heritage Touring Cup race. It turned out to be a very eventful race, which saw many drivers fell foul of the very strictly reinforced track limits. Yves Scemama kept his nose clean and managed to stay out of the penalty box. He was rightly awarded for this and his great pace with a victory. Armand Mille also made it to the podium with his Capri, finishing third overall. Dominique Guenat and Guillaume Mahe finished a commendable fifth with their BMW 3.0 CSL, while Didier Gruau placed seventh overall and first in the 2-litre category with his Ford Es**rt. Hervé Ordioni drove his Es**rt to 23rd and Jeanne Mille finished 29th in the Group A BMW 635 CSI.

Armand actually never made it to the HTC podium as he was due out immediately with his Lola T70 in Classic Endurance Racing 1. Fortunately, the race was preceded by a grid walk, so he could relax for a few minutes before embarking on another one-hour race. It was another competitive race and Armand held his own as he moved up the order from the third on the grid to finish third overall. Pierre-Alain was also out in his T70 and he ended the race in 12th overall. The first race after the lunch break was the second heat of the Gentlemen Challenge. Our three Listers once again starred at the sharp end of the field. In the end, it was Luc-Pierre Verquin, who finished second overall, just ahead of Charles de Villaucourt. Guillaume Mahe was classified 13th in his Lister. Placing second in class and eighth overall was Georges Verquin in his Jaguar E-Type.

Our final race of the meeting was for the CER2, which saw Yves Scemama and Maxime Guenat line-up on the front row. They charged away together when the lights turned green and changed positions at least once in the early stages of the race. Eventually, it was Yves who had the upper hand in his TOJ over the Lola of Maxime. They finished first and second but Maxime was later penalised for exceeding the track limits. This promoted his father Dominique to second after a faultless race in his TOJ to third across the line and second on the podium from sixth on the grid.

With a pair of outright victories and numerous overall and class podium finishes it was a very successful Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or. The pace and the stamina displayed this weekend is a testament to the hard work of our mechanics and drivers. They will be back in action at the next Peter Auto round; the Dix Mille Tours at the end of August.

Grand Prix de l’age d’Or : saturday

Today, the first races of the 2024 Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or were held. First there was still the matter of setting the grids for some of Sunday’s races. First up was the hotly disputed CER1 group where Armand Mille placed fifth and Pierre-Alain France 14th, both in Lola T70s. In the subsequent HTC qualifying, we filled five of the first six places but sadly missed out on pole position. That means that Maxime Guenat, Armand, Guillaume and Yvan Mahe, Yves Scemama and Dominique Guenat have their work cut out. Both driving Ford Es**rts, Didier Gruau and Hervé Ordioni were 14th and 32nd fastest respectively. Jean Mille was fifth in the Group A class with her BMW 635 CSI.

The CER2 qualifying was effectively cut short as the predicted rain started to fall. Fortunately, the rain came not before Yves had clocked the fastest time of the session with his TOJ. Maxime qualified second on the grid in his first outing of the year with his Lola T286. Dominique will line up for the race in sixth with his TOJ. The rain continued for the opening race of the weekend, which was the 2.0L Cup. Alexis de Falcon braved the conditions and kept out of trouble. He was rewarded with a 19th place finish.

Race two of the Saturday was for the Gentlemen Challenge. Also held in torrential conditions, the 40-minute race saw Yvan work his way up the order with the Lister that he had started from the sixth row, and finish an impressive third overall. He just beat Luc-Pierre Verquin to the final podium spot with his Lister. Charles de Villaucourt also did well to finish eighth and Georges Verquin’s tenth with his Jaguar E-Type came with a class podium.

The rain did not stop for the Sixties’ Endurance race, which was chaotic at best. The safety car was called out on several occasions but Erwin France kept his head down and steered clear of any trouble in Shelby Cobra Daytona with a second-place finish as the well deserved result. Luc-Pierre just missed out on the top-ten, while Charles crossed the line in 18th with his Cobra. Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen ended the race in 26th in the duo’s Bizzarrini. Yves and Armand had an eventful race and ended up a much delayed 34th.

Racing will resume first thing tomorrow morning. With both the CER races, the Heritage Touring Cup and another heat of the Gentlemen Challenge there is much more silverware for the taking.

Grand Prix de l’Age de l’Or : friday

In near perfect conditions, the 2024 edition of the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or kicked off this morning. First out on track were the 2.0L Cup cars, which included the Porsche 911 of Alexis de Falcon. There was a free practice first and then the grid for the 90-minute race was set in the afternoon. In the hugely competitive field, Alexis was 22nd fastest.

The rest of the morning and much of the afternoon was filled with free practice sessions. Although the times will be reset for qualifying, it was good to see Guillaume and Yvan Mahe top the Heritage Touring Cup with their BMW 3.5 CSL and Yves Scemama doing the same in CER2 with his TOJ.

The final two sessions of the day set the grid for the Sixties’ Endurance and Gentleman Challenge grids. The sharp end of the Sixties’ field was somewhat unusual as the first Cobra was in fifth place. This was the Daytona Coupe of Erwin France. Armand Mille and Yves were eighth in their sister car, while Charles de Villaucourt and Luc-Pierre Verquin will line up in 14th and 25th with their hard-top equipped Cobras. The German pairing of Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen will start tomorrow’s race in 24th with their Bizzarrini.

In the final session of the day, Luc-Pierre and Charles were in the battle for pole position but eventually had to settle for third and fourth with their Listers. Yvan and Guillaume were sixth in their newly acquired Lister. Georges Verquin was third fastest in the GT category with his Jaguar E-Type.

After the final qualifying sessions, the racing will start on Saturday with the 2.0L Cup and Sixties’ Endurance, as well as the first of the two Gentlemen Trophy races. As always, all the action can be followed through the official live timing.

Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or 2024 : Preview

After a busy month of May, we are right back at in June with the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or at the Circuit Dijon-Prenois. Round three of the 2024 Peter Auto season will see 23 historic racing cars prepared by Equipe Europe take to what is our home track.

In the two Classic Endurance Racing races a familiar face returns in CER2 as Maxime Guenat will be back in action to defend his 2023 win with his Lola. He will up against his father Dominique and Yves Scemama, both racing three-litre engined TOJs. The CER1 field will feature Armand Mille and Pierre-Alain France both racing their Lola T70s. In the Porsche 911-only 2.0L Cup, Alexis de Falcon will be racing his short wheelbase 911.

The Sixties’ Endurance race a quarter of Cobras will be complemented by Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen in their white and gold Bizzarrini 5300 GT. Two of the Cobras are of Daytona configuration with one raced by Erwin France and the second shared by Armand and Yves. Luc-Pierre Verquin will drive his Cobra roadster solo, as will Charles de Villaucourt. This duo will be out in their respective Listers in the Gentlemen’s Trophy. A third Lister is entered for Guillaume and Yvan Mahe, while Georges Verquin will be behind the wheel of his Jaguar E-Type.

With eight cars entered, we are most strongly represented in the one-hour Heritage Touring Cup race. Maxime, Armand and Yves will all be racing Capris, while Dominique is in the BMW 3.0 CSL corner as will be Guillaume and Yvan. All five cars should have a shot the outright victory. Competing in the under two-litre class will be Didier Gruau and Hervé Ordioni in their Ford Es**rts. Competing in the Group A category is Jeanne Mille with the Texaco-liveried BMW 635 CSI.

The action will start at 9 am sharp on Friday morning with free practice for the 2.0L Cup and our drivers can be followed, as always, through the official live timing and our daily updates.

Spa Classic 2024 : sunday

The third day provided a fitting and spectacular finale to the 2024 Spa Classic. After a very short night, the action resumed with the CER1 race, which saw Armand Mille and Pierre-Alain France both race their respective Lolas. Having qualified fifth, Armand was at the sharp end of the field throughout the one-hour race. His craft was eventually with a third place finish. Pierre-Alain also worked his way up the order and converted a 14th spot on the grid in a 11th at the finish.

Having scored a surprise victory in the first Gentlemen Trophy race, Luc-Pierre Verquin was quick again with his Lister in the second. He eventually had to settle for third. Having clocked no time in qualifying, Charles de Villaucourt once again had his work cut out. While he could no better than 31st in the first race, he now managed to get by 30 cars and claim the final position in the top ten. Georges Verquin ended the race with his Jaguar E-Type in 29th. In CER2, Yves Scemama looked set to claim a comfortable win with his TOJ. Unfortunately, a brake failure forced him to retire.

Sunday was concluded by the second Heritage Touring Cup race. Yves bounced back after the CER2 disappointment and converted his pole position in the second victory of the weekend. It was an all-Equipe Europe podium with Armand second in another Capri and Guillaume Mahe third in a BMW. Didier Gruau was seventh, Hervé Ordioni seventeenth, Erik Maris nineteenth and his sons Achille and Thédore were twentieth, all racing in Ford Es**rts. Jeanne Mille was classified 23rd in her BMW.

It was a spectacular end to an exciting weekend of racing that saw the Spa Francorchamps circuit live up to its reputation. With three wins and several other podium it was also a successful edition of the Spa Classic for the Equipe Europe drivers and mechanics. Next up is the Grand Prix de l’Age d’Or at Dijon during the second weekend of June

Spa Classic 2024 : Friday

After a very wet first day, the weather was more favourable on Saturday with large dry spells and even some sun in the afternoon. As a result almost all sessions could be completed without incident. The day started with the final qualifying sessions that set the grids for the CER1, CER2 and Gentlemen Challenge grids.

The first race of the weekend was for the ERL2, which is an Endurance Racing Legends spin-off for GT2 cars only. Pierre-Alain and Erwin France competed in the invitation class with their Ferrari 458 GT3 and finished fifth overall in damp conditions. Dominique Guenat followed closely in his Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and finished eighth. Late in the evening a second race was scheduled but it was cut short after a sudden rain shower, prompting a red flag after a mere five laps.

Next up was the first of two Gentlemen Challenge races. Luc-Pierre Verquin featured at the sharp end of the leaderboard throughout the race with his Lister Chevrolet. A late mishap for some rivals promoted him to first place, scoring his first win with the Lister. His father Georges finished a commendable 22nd and Charles de Villaucourt placed 31st after starting from the back of the grid. The second race is scheduled for Sunday morning.

The first of the evening races was for the Sixties’ Endurance, which started in daylight and finished on a pitch black Spa Francorchamps circuit. With qualifying cancelled, the grid was not necessarily representative. Erwin started on the fourth row with his Cobra Daytona and worked his way up the order as night fell. He eventually finished an impressive second overall, less than ten seconds behind the winner. Charles had a steady race with his Cobra and crossed the line in 15th. Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen had fun with their Bizzarrini and were rewarded with 23rd. Starting dead last, Richard Renault moved up the order to 32nd.

The final race of the day actually finished early on Sunday morning; the Heritage Touring Cup. Yves Scemama had a superb race from pole position. He eventually won with a margin of nearly 30 seconds over the nearest rival. Armand Mille was third in his Capri, followed by Guillaume Mahe and Dominique in fourth, Erik Maris in fifth and Dominique Gruau in seventh. Our second CSL was 13th, while the Maris brothers were placed seventeenth and Hervé Ordioni crossed the line in 19th.

Racing will resume on Sunday with CER1 at 9:30 am.

Spa Classic 2024 : Friday

It was a very wet opening day at the 2024 Spa Classic. Conditions actually worsened as evening fell, which prompted the last remaining sessions to be cancelled. During the daytime we did get a chance to go out on track. First up were the nine cars entered in the Heritage Touring Cup with a practice in the morning and qualifying in the afternoon. During the latter sessions Yves Scemama put in a superb lap to claim pole position in his Capri with a margin of nearly three seconds over his closest rival. Dominique Guenat and Guillaume Mahe also did well to qualify the BMW they shared in fourth. Fastest of the Es**rts was Erik Maris, while his two sons faced a steep learning curve under tricky conditions and were 18th fastest.

Qualifying for the Sixties’ Endurance race was one of the sessions that got cancelled, so the grid will likely be set using the results of practice. Sharing with Armand Mille, Yves was fourth fastest with their Shelby Cobra Daytona. In a sister car, Erwin France was eighth. A lot can still happen in the 120-minute race, which will finish in the dark. The grid was also set for the two ERL2 races, which will see Pierre-Alain and Erwin France start in 12th with their Ferrari 458 GT3 and Dominique in 15th with his Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. The last session of the day was practice for the Gentlemen Challenge, which saw Luc-Pierre and Georges Verquin and Charles de Villaucourt all face the ever worsening conditions.

If there are no further changes to the schedule, the action will resume with qualifying for the Gentlemen Challenge and run right into the early hours of Sunday morning with the night race for the HTC.

Mugello Classic : 2/2

We conclude our 2024 Mugello Classic recap with a look at the two Classic Endurance Racing races and the Heritage Touring Cup. Thanks to the great work from our mechanics and drivers, these resulted in two outright victories and a pair of podiums.

Classic Endurance Racing 1
A favourite among fans and entrants alike is the Classic Endurance Racing 1 grid for late 1960s and early 1970s sports cars. The capacity grid at Mugello included a pair of Lola T70 Mk3bs, driven by Armand Mille and Pierre-Alain France respectively. With the fast but flowing circuit they had their work cut out against the other five-litre prototypes and the more nimble two and three-litre cars. Armand lined up in third for the race and Pierre-Alain started the race in tenth. In the opening laps Armand moved into second and then patiently waited for an opportunity to grab the lead in the second half of the race. Despite several safety car periods, that opportunity came and he scored an impressive outright victory in the 50-strong field. Pierre-Alain also has a steady race and also managed to move up the order to finish in seventh.

Race:
Armand 1st
Pierre-Alain 7th

Classic Endurance Racing 2
Immediately after CER1, it was time for the slightly later CER2 cars to line up on the grid. Yves Scemama was our sole representative with his Warsteiner liveried and Cosworth DFV engined TOJ. He nevertheless made us sit up and watch, first during qualifying and then in the race. Yves missed out on the pole position but nevertheless secured a spot on the front row. In the opening laps of the race, he kept his station and waited for a mistake from the pole sitter. His patience was rewarded and Yves scored a convincing victory with a margin of a full minute over the second placed car.

Race:
Yves 1st

Heritage Touring Cup
The final race of the weekend was the one-hour Heritage Touring Cup. Six cars were entered although Yves could not start the race with his Ford Capri due to a broken valve spring. That meant our honours were defended by Armand with his Capri, Guillaume and Yvan Mahe in a BMW 3.0 CSL, Jeanne Mille in a BMW 635 CSI Group A and Didier Gruau and Hervé Ordioni both in Es**rts. Armand would start the race from pole position but had to settle for second behind a blisteringly fast CSL. Guillaume raced the CSL solo and moved up the order to finish just off the podium. Didier had an impressive run to finish 10th overall, ahead of all the other two-litre cars. Making her competition debut, Jeanne made no mistakes and was rewarded with a class podium. Hervé’s efforts unfortunately came to naught as he had to retire in the final quarter of the race.

Race:
Capri 3100 : Armand 2nd
BMW 3.5 CSL : Guillaume 4th
Es**rt RS : Didier 10th ( First in -2L)
BMW 635 : Jeanne 19th (3rd in class)
Es**rt RS : Herve : DNF
Capri 3100 : Yves NS

There is a little to time recover as we will be back on the road shortly for the Tour Auto at the end of April and then the Spa Classic in May.

Mugello Classic 2024 : 1/2

Under beautiful skies with the lovely hills of Tuscany in the background our 2024 racing season got under way successfully during this weekend’s Mugello Classic. We prepared and fielded 16 cars, which our drivers raced in five different categories. The action was virtually non-stop with no breaks in the schedule and the racing was great. With three outright wins from six opportunities, there was quite a bit of silverware to show for it. In our first recap of the weekend we take a look at the Gentlemen Challenge and Sixties’ Endurance races.

The Gentlemen Challenge
A new category for the 2024 season, the Gentlemen Challenge is a combination of the old Greatest’s Trophy and Fifties’s Endurance. The 35-strong grid included father and son Georges and Luc-Pierre Verquin in a Jaguar E-Type and Lister Knobbly respectively. They qualified 20th and third on the grid for the two 45-minute races. Both races were hotly disputed but the Verquins kept their head cool finishing 3rd and 15th in the first. They improved in the second with Luc-Pierre scoring a well deserved outright win, while his father placed 14th and second in class.

Race 1:
Lister jaguar : Luc-Pierre 3rd
Jaguar E : Georges 15th / P4 in class

Race 2:
Lister Jaguar : Luc-Pierre 1st
Jaguar E : Georges 13th / P2 in class

Sixties’ Endurance
A set fixture during the Peter Auto weekends is the Sixties’ Endurance race; a two-hour enduro for late 1950s and early 1960s GT and sports cars. No fewer than 59 cars were entered. Our roster included two Shelby Cobra Daytonas, one for Armand Mille and Yves Scemama, while Erwin France was set to drive his example solo. There were joined by a pair of Cobra Roadsters with Guillaume and Yvan Mahe racing one, and Luc-Pierre racing the other. The fifth car entered was the Bizzarrini 5300 GT that Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen had previously raced in the Greatest’s Trophy.

After a frenetic 40-minute qualifying session, the grid was set with Erwin, clinching a spot on the front of the grid. Although feeling a little under the weather, Erwin did start the race and quickly moved into the lead. Before the mandatory pit stops Armand had moved up to second in the Daytona he shared with Yves. Guillaume and Luc-Pierre were also holding steady. The Bizzarrini had some trouble adjusting to endurance racing and suffered overheating brakes early on but Volker and Björn did manage to reach the finish. After the stops, Erwin’s felt the effects of his illness but did hold on to finish an impressive fifth. Luc-Pierre’s solid pace earned him an eighth place finish. Sadly, Yves and Yvan were both involved in separate incidents and did not reach the finish.

Race:
Cobra Daytona : Erwin 5th
Cobra Roadster : Luc-Pierre 8th
Cobra Daytona : Armand and Yves 37th(DNF)
Bizzarini : Volker and Björn 39th
Cobra Roadster : Guillaume and Yvan 40th (DNF)

Mugello Classic 2024 : preview

After a long but busy off-season, we will be back in action this weekend at Mugello. The Tuscan hills will reverberate with the sound of racing cars during the Peter Auto season opener. Spread over six race groups, nineteen of those will be supported by Equipe Europe. Among the many familiar faces, we will also run several new cars and drivers.

Defending our honours in Classic Endurance Racing 1 are Armand Mille and Pierre-Alain France both in a Lola T70. In CER2, Yves Scemama and Dominique Guenat will be chasing the outright victory in their respective DFV-engined TOJs. Dominique will also race his Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the Endurance Racing Legends series.

Some of the Peter Auto race-groups have been reshuffled and the new Gentlemen Challenge has been created. Father and son Georges and Luc-Pierre will compete in the two 45-minute races. Georges will be back in his Jaguar E-Type, while Luc-Pierre will compete in the Lister Chevrolet that was driven to victory at Mugello last year.

As a result of the changes, Volker Hichert will step up to the Sixties’ Endurance with his Bizzarrini 5300 GT. He will be joined by two Shelby Cobra Daytonas with the first shared by Yves and Armand, while the second will see father and son Pierre-Alain and Erwin France share the driving duties. Luc-Pierre is also out with his Cobra Roadster. Yvan and Guillaume Mahe will be out in another Cobra.

The hotly disputed Heritage Touring Cup will see seven of our cars in action. Yves and Armand will both race their Capri RS 3100s. Guillaume will debut a new BMW 3.0 CSL, while Dominique and Yvan will also be out in a CSL. Didier Gruau is back with his Ford Es**rt and we will see Hervé Ordioni debut his Es**rt. Jeanne Mille will also make her racing debut in the BMW 635 CSI that brother Armand has raced very successfully in the Group A category.

As always, we will provide updates every evening from our progress during the weekend. All the action from the Mugello Classic can also be followed through the live timing on the Peter Auto website.

Estoril Classic : Saturday

It was an exciting day at the Circuit do Estoril, which kicked off bright and early with qualifying for the Heritage Touring Cup. This is one of the most competitive races of the weekend with many fast cars and talented drivers. Maxime Guenat stood his own and finished the session third in the fastest of the Capris. Armand Mille was fifth fastest, followed by fellow Capri racer Yves Scemama, while Dominique Guenat will start in seventh with his BMW. Erik Maris was second of the two-litre cars and will start the race in eleventh with his Es**rt.

Next, the grids for the Classic Endurance Racing races were set. In CER1, Armand clocked the third fastest time with his Lola T70 and Pierre-Alain France will line up his T70 in 14th on the grid. Maxime and Yves dominated the CER2 qualifying. Although they were less than four tenths apart, the gap to the next quickest car was well over two seconds. Maxime will start on pole with his Lola and Yves will start alongside in his TOJ.

After the brief lunch break, the races started. First up was the Fifties' Legends where Luc-Pierre and Georges Verquin had a solid run to 14th overall in their E-Type. All eyes were on the Bizzarrini in the Greatest's Trophy next. Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen had a superb race and crossed the line in first after the 40-minute race. It was the first win of the German duo with the rumbling Bizzarrini. As the sun started to set, the Endurance Racing Legends lined up for the first of two 40-minute races. Erik unfortunately had to retire his Porsche after a race track incident, while Dominique placed his 911 GT3 RSR in 6th in class.

The final race of the day was the Sixties' Endurance, which started a little late and as a result was run almost entirely in the darkness. The championship was on the line, Guillaume Mahe and Maxime had it within grasps until a late retirement during the battle for the crown left their hope in the gravel . There were no such issues for Armand and Yves, who worked their way up the order with their Cobra Daytona to claim the final step of the podium. Luc-Pierre drove solo to claim 11th. Sadly an issue with the lights, which were crucial during this race, thwarted the effort of Pierre-Alain and Erwin France in their Daytona.

Estoril Classic : Friday

It was a busy day at the Circuito do Estoril with practice and qualifying sessions for this weekend's races. Under a lovely blue sky, the grid was set for the Endurance Racing Legends race with Erik Maris and Dominique Guenat lining up for the race in 15th and 16th overall. After practice in the morning, it was qualifying in the afternoon for the Fifties Legends where father and son Georges and Luc-Pierre Verquin clocked the 17th fastest time in their Jaguar E-Type. Volker Hichert and Björn Ebsen will start the Greatest's Trophy on the second row with the menacing Bizzarrini.

The most frenetic session was for the Sixties' Endurance race. The cars went out as the sun was setting and for quite a few drivers the championship standings provided some added incentive to give a real go. As a result, Maxime Guenat and Guillaume Mahe will line up in fourth with their Cobra, just ahead of Pierre-Alain and Erwin France in their Cobra Daytona. In the sister Daytona, Armand Mille and Yves Scemama will start ninth. Driving solo, Luc-Pierre will start 16th.

Saturday will see further qualifying and the first race. The action will culminate with then highly anticipated, two-hour Sixties' Endurance race that starts at 18:30.

Estoril Classic 2023 : preview

Chasing the last traces of summer, the 2023 Peter Auto season finale will be held in sunny Estoril this weekend. With beautiful blue skies and scorching conditions predicted, all ingredients are present for a great Estoril Classics. We will be supporting 17 cars spread over six different categories.

In the two Classic Endurance Racing races, we will be chasing outright victories with the two Lola T70s of Pierre-Alain France and Armand Mille in CER1 and the Lola T286 of Maxime Guenat and the TOJ SC304 of Yves Scemama respectively. Armand, Yves and Max will also race in the Heritage Touring Cup in a Ford Capri RS 3100. They will be joined by Dominique Guenat in a BMW 3.0 CSL and Erik Maris in a Ford Es**rt RS 1600. Dominique and Erik will also field Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs in the Endurance Racing Legends.

The Greatest's Trophy will see a single entry of Volker Hichert in his Bizzarrini, while Georges Verquin will compete with his Jaguar E-Type in the Fifties Legends. In the two-hour Sixties' Endurance race we will run four Cobras. These are the two Daytona Coupes of Yves and Armand, and Pierre-Alain and Erwin France respectively. Luc-Pierre Verquin will drive his Cobra Hard-Top solo, while Guillaume Mahe and Maxime will chase a repeat win with the latter's Cobra Hard-Top.
