LED BY STUDENT NAACP, DRAKE STUDENTS SEEK STRONGER COMMITMENT BY THE UNIVERSITY TO RACIAL EQUITY

Students at Drake are asking the university to make policy changes to strengthen racial equity on the campus. Led by the campus chapter of the NAACP, the students are asking Drake to reassess policy statements about nondiscrimination and audit interactions between students and campus police among other things. They are also asking for a stronger response to incidents of discrimination or racism on campus.

Several of the demands involve the Des Moines police department which maintains an office on campus. One is to bar from campus any police officers found to have used excessive force in recent demonstrations around the city. A second calls for the university to publish the memorandum of understanding which covers the Des Moines police presence on campus. A third: Don't allow Des Moines to be involved in alleged drug or alcohol violations by students on campus.

You can find the complete document, along with a list of the student organization sponsors, at the NAACP Drake University Chapter page on Facebook.

Moments like these in history force us to confront the sobering truths of where we are as a nation.

Many will have their eyes opened to realities and perspectives they did not see before, better understanding how racism continues to shape our daily lives. Others will feel emboldened to turn their knowledge and empathy into action for the first time.

And then there are those leaders who have been in this fight for much longer.

This week, I am proud to honor a community activist that has not only been on the front lines of demonstrations against abuses of power and racial injustice this week – but has been working every day to raise up our community: Kameron Middlebrooks, President of the Des Moines NAACP

UPDATE:

As promised, we are here to give you an update on things concerning our petition and specific demands we plan to send out to the public. We have received 1,886 signatures on our petition! We are almost at 2,000 signatures. Please continue to sign and share. I know many of you have reached out regarding specific demands, and we are still going to get that out to you. The demands that we are requesting are threefold, and they are concerning the ties Public Safety has with the Des Moines Police Department, revisions & additions to policies and procedures already in place, and general student demands such as the creation of a Multicultural & NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) student building or house.

Additionally, Drake leadership members who work directly with Public Safety have reached out to us to have a conversation regarding the ties Drake Public Safety has with the Des Moines Police Department some time tomorrow. In the making of these demands, we reached out to other student organizations to obtain their support as well as sure they are included and heard in their demands. We have taken their revisions and edits and made sure to have their voices heard as well.

We thank you for your patience in this endeavor. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
