Special-Act: Each designer commits to design one extra fashion piece for the event.

studioRUIG

Concept? Klaartje Glashorster, Inge Hendriks and Sophie Soons, the three designers behind studioRUIG, spend few words on their designs — they prefer to let their sharp intuition and creative verve do the talking. This ambitious Dutch start-up label blossomed into a successful fashion brand in just three years. studioRUIG captures the zeitgeist with unpretentious yet carefully designed collections characterized by an androgynous sensuality, pure materials and a strong use of color. Leather is a favorite material and helps define the ‘RUIG’ component, which comes from the Dutch word for ‘rough.’ Finished in the simplest possible way, the material’s natural properties come to life. That is the metaphor for studioRUIG’s success: unaffected and fearless fashion.

After graduating in 2008 from the Utrecht School of the Arts, Glashorster, Hendriks and Soons went right to work on studioRUIG. They have since moved to a new atelier in Eindhoven.

Shari Scholte

ROPAROSA: Roos van der Kamp

Roos van der Kamp graduated as a video artist at the Utrecht School of Arts in 2006. Afterwards she committed to fashion and founded ROPAROSA.

In the first years of her business, she worked on several projects in theatres, museums and on festivals. In 2010, she won the Dutch tv-show Project Runway and ROPAROSA became an official fashion label. Now she produces two collections a year.

Inspired by powerful and playful females her designs focus on sharp lines with a relaxed form. Geometrical shapes are combined with a feminine fit and executed with sportswear inspired materials.

ROPAROSA celebrates and stimulates individual power and is all about inspiring women to live their life based on their inner force.

Niki Mens

Niki graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2005. Since then she worked in various fields of fashion connected to art, film, video clips and exhibitions. While working on these multi-fashion-projects Niki travelled and took in the world.

Past highlights have been the fashion exhibition/show Free And Untamed Beings in 2008, and receiving a grant from Fonds BKVB in 2009 enabling her to make a collection for FAT/Fashion Art Toronto 2010 by invitation of the Dutch Embassy. In Ottawa and Toronto Niki showed the Borderline Collection under the name ‘Square Root of Two”. This occasion was at the same time the start of her collaboration with Wouter de Haan. Business mind and design mind joined forces and decided it was time to start a label together, simply called ‘Niki Mens’.

Niki Mens makes fashion based on a typical amazement for existing shapes. She has an eye for the unusual. Niki Mens combines a mathematical way of interpreting patterns with a slightly bohemian and nostalgic feel.

Amsterdam-based designer Femke Agema looked to the Mayan calendar for inspiration as she created her spring/summer 2012 collection. The Mayans’ prediction of apocalyptic destruction, hell and high water helped shape the ideas behind Drijf, Femke’s water-themed end-of-the-world collection. Having a rather positive take on this catastrophic event, Femke leaves no room for doom and gloom; instead she plays up her signature aesthetic that is colorful and lighthearted.”

Presenting Andrea Mohr: ‘Andrea Mohr’ is a high-fashion womenswear label based in the Netherlands.

The brand stands for minimalistic and refined design, which is characterized by attention to detail in fit and finish.

Innovatively treated and contrasting materials are essential for Andrea Mohr’s work, which is not only expressed in her choice of materials but also in her passion for print design.

While her approach in design is one of respect for traditional handcraft and technique, she constantly tries to push the boundaries and use materials in a new context.

First stop: Helsinki

Designers on Tour’s first stop will be in the World Design Capital 2012: Helsinki.

Helsinki’s Design Week 2012 could hardly be a more appropriate background for the inaugural launch of Designers on Tour. Helsinki’s dynamic fashion scene is as fascinating as Finland itself this country set at the crossroads of different cultures and boasting an economy built on technology and innovation. In September, design takes over Helsinki . While our shop is not directly affiliated with Design Week, we are thrilled to have a presence in Helsinki’s trendsetting Kallio neighborhood as the event takes place.
