WARRIORS IN HISTORY: SAINT NICHOLAS

"Saint Nicholas had no compunctions about a forceful defense of truth, even though he ended up thrown in jail for his bold actions."

ONCE A SOLDIER, ALWAYS A WARRIOR

"My first TIC (Troops in Contact) was in 2000 something in somewhere Iraq. When we RTBed (returned to base), I was given a shot…and then some, of alcohol and received high-fives and hugs from everyone on the team. I became part of the fraternity of warriors. I wasn’t just some boot that played soldier. I was a bona fide killer. I exchanged rounds with the enemy and was victorious. I became part of the family. I was finally called, “Brother."

I DIDN'T DO IT FOR YOU

"The night sky was lit up with tracer rounds.  It looked like something out of Star Wars.  I remember my Company Commander (CO) was standing just outside the building when and a round whizzed right over his head, slamming into the wall.  He quickly ran back inside as he sarcastically said, 'Well better not stand there!'"

A WARRIOR IN THE WOODS

"I believe a Warrior becomes one out of necessity. However, the Warrior must continue to push their mind or physical abilities to their maximum, to continue to overcome the obstacles they are facing, to remain a Warrior. These obstacles will be ever changing, and therefore requiring constant adaptation. I believe that there is no specific amount of time that it takes for someone to become a Warrior. Everyone has different struggles and obstacles in life."

TO LEAD IS TO INFLUENCE

"Warriors are stakeholders in the business of combat. They are looking for a tribe, an adrenaline rush, and a feeling of victory. Leaders must provide these personal interests to the warriors. It’s a two-way street. Leaders accomplish this by providing tasks with outcomes that provide the personal interests desired by the warriors. If a Leader’s tasks are aligned with the personal interests of their warriors, the warrior will take the tasks as their own."

PHYSICAL FITNESS; THE FOUNDATION OF ALL TRAINING

"You may classify as Expert while shooting in a clean, climate-controlled, indoor range, but how well do you shoot after a 60-second fistfight and grappling match to gain control of your weapon? Are you ignoring the responder requirements in the realm of physical fitness while spending all of your time training technical and tactical skills? This is a mistake that at best would be considered suboptimal, and at worst, deadly. With that idea in mind, we present a conceptual hierarchy of needs for the responder..."

RECON THE OBJECTIVE

"Some lessons are meant to be learned the hard way and that’s how I learned this lesson, but it saved my ass from possible harder troubles down the road."

Becoming the Warrior

"I came into the world of police work, and suddenly met guys that I didn’t know existed. Hard working, humble cops, who got in foot chases and fights more times than the average citizen can imagine, who had guns pulled on them and pulled guns on other people, who hunted and caught violent criminals, and did it, day in and day out. I also met cops who never looked for work, who sat in a parking lot, begrudgingly went on the calls they were sent to, and never did a lick more. As I began to meet and work alongside cops from both of these groups, I had a slow, dawning realization.
What I realized was this: your profession is not what makes you a warrior."

It Used to Matter

"I try not to wear my service on my sleeve. People usually find out that I was in the Army because they ask what I did before I came to police work. It’s not that I’m ashamed of it, but rather that I don’t feel like I did much of anything worth talking about. I had soldiers under me and over me who had been blown up, had killed people, or had watched their buddies die. That far outweighs anything that I experienced in my time, so I usually just try to not spend too much time talking about it."

You're Not a Tactical Athlete

"I don’t give a f*ck what you are, or what unit you were a part of, or how many kills you have had using an explosive arrow tip (5). And neither should you. When it comes to fitness, you and I should only care about how someone can coach, and their background/knowledge in coaching. Anything else in the badass department is just a bonus. I myself am a former US Army Infantry Officer, Ranger, and police officer. I like to shoot guns and wear pants with too many pockets as much as the next tacti-cool guy; however, my former professions are NOT why you heed my advice when it comes to strength training, or being fit in general. I’ll give you a few reasons why..."

"It was December 6th, 2014. I was a young second lieutenant in the infantry with a brand-new infantry platoon on his first deployment to Afghanistan. I had been in command of this platoon for less than three months, so saying that I was “cherry fu***ng lieutenant” is an understatement. I was first platoon’s platoon leader (PL) with Charlie Company of the 3-187th Infantry Battalion in the 3rd Brigade – also known as the “Rakkasans.” Ask anyone in the Army, and you will either hear love or hate for the Rakkasans. Hate us or love us, but we were the most deployed infantry unit out of Fort Campbell and the entire United States Army. I liked being a part of that. I liked the fact that we were considered “the best,” but I am sure every unit in whatever organization feels that way. But s**t happens when you are in any unit that causes any person with any kind of ethical standards to raise an eyebrow. And, not even a month and a half into my first combat deployment, I had mine..."

"For as long as I can remember I wanted to grow up to become a warrior. There is no doubt that I was heavily influenced by my father, who had been a battle-hardened Army officer for the British military. His war stories are why I spent most of my childhood in camouflage with a toy gun in my hand. I often found myself “in command” of the neighborhood kids as we played war-games. Eventually, this inspiration from my father led me to become a US Army Infantry officer, and a police officer after that. Yet, was my father my only inspiration to become an Army officer – a warrior..."
