My Story
I grew up in a small Ohio town with a Chocolate Shop, central in the community where it was a guarantee to run into neighbors and friends. My family may have been a little chocolate-crazy looking back. We traveled out of our way for chocolate to the best off-the-beaten-path shop on our visits to Grandparents in Pittsburgh. We each hid our own stash of chocolate turtles, nut clusters or pretzels given by Mom over the holidays so that our siblings didnāt āmistakeā them as their own. Maybe it was these traditions or something in our paternal Belgian genes that gave us all a love of chocolate. Early on, I had a dream that maybe I could own a chocolate business somedayā¦
I have since had the privilege of fulfilling many roles in life. My work for twelve years as a Small Growth Company Business Analyst only fueled my curiosity to engage in business. Thankfully, I was able to push the pause button on my career by the time I had my third child (2 girls and a boyā¦blessed!). A few years off, quickly turned into five and I struggled to think that I might become outdated. I wish the world could fully appreciate the battle that goes on inside of Moms to be amazing at mom-hood while simultaneously holding down a career. At the very least, I think we each struggle to not compare ourselves to the one who gets to stay home or the one who gets to go to work. Either way, we feel that we are missing outā¦
While my kids grew, I had been spending much of my time helping our young church grow and establish a childrenās ministry. I was offered a part-time job Directing the Grade School Ministry at Lifepoint Church. This became a huge blessing in helping me to have balance between working and enjoying my time with family. I found a motivation that I hadnāt previously realized to equip volunteers to lead children during their Sunday morning program. I was amazed each week to watch how God would provide us with the leaders needed and the energy needed to manage a ministry busting at the seams with children and families.
One defining moment for me came when we had the opportunity to take our three pre-teen and teenage children to Jamaica to build houses for a community of folks who didnāt have economic means. By serving this community, our kids got outside of their bubble and saw how crucial it is for people to have safety, security and opportunities for work. I built some friendships with two Jamaican ladies, also moms, that impacted me deeply. We found a connection with each other in our shared misery of being āTall-girlsā. Iām 5ā 9.5ā tall, and they were equally blessed. We laughed together about how awful it was to go through middle school towering over the boys. Though worlds apart, our shared commiseration over āsufferingā sealed our friendship. Their hearts were hungry to learn about having a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ ā an opportunity that they had questions about but had never been able to ask anyone before. This experience began a desire in me to search for ways to help both spiritually and economically, those who donāt have the means and opportunities that we have to find meaningful work as well as practice and discuss faith.
