"Sometimes we panic, because the bills need paying and we have to be grown-up and we don't know how, because it's so horribly, desperately easy to fail at being grown-up." - Fredrik Backman, Anxious People: A Novel

"There are many kinds of selfishness in this world, but the most selfish is hoarding time, because none of us know how much we have, and it is an affront to God to assume there will be more." - Mitch Albom, Finding Chika

"He couldn't stand watching everyone's faces go from neutral to suddenly smiling the second the camera was raised, then back to neutral again. It made him feel unwell." - Exurb1a, The Fifth Science

"Is this what humans do?” Loki asked. “Go to museums and clubs and drink tea and sleep on moldy mattresses in freezing flats.”

“Sometimes,” Theo replied. “When we’re not fighting and working and dying in factories. What do Asgardians do?”

"It’s possible that Knight believed he was one of the few sane people left. He was confounded by the idea that passing the prime of your life in a cubicle, spending hours a day at a computer, in exchange for money, was considered acceptable, but relaxing in a tent in the woods was disturbed. Observing the trees was indolent; cutting them down was enterprising. What did Knight do for a living? He lived for a living." - Michael Finkel, The Stranger in the Woods

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day" - Dean Martin

"As far as I can see, this is a problem with living in the twenty-first century. Many of us have every material thing we need, so the job of marketing is now to tie the economy to our emotions, to make us feel like we need more by making us want things we never needed before. We are made to feel poor on thirty thousand pounds a year. To feel poorly travelled if we have been to only ten other countries. To feel too old if we have a wrinkle. To feel ugly if we aren’t photoshopped and filtered." - Matt Haig, How To Stop Time

"He says that most people don’t want to be free. Because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility" - Matt Haig, How To Stop Time

"It occurred to me that human beings didn’t live beyond a hundred because they simply weren’t up for it. Psychologically, I mean. You kind of ran out. There wasn’t enough self to keep going. You grew too bored of your own mind. Of the way life repeated itself. How, after a while, there wasn’t a smile or gesture that you hadn’t seen before. There wasn’t a change in the world order that didn’t echo other changes in the world order. And the news stopped being new. The very word ‘news’ became a joke. It was all just a cycle." - Matt Haig, How To Stop Time

"In most professions, getting older means getting better at your job, earning respect because of your seniority and experience. If your job depends on your looks, the opposite is true—how depressing. Suffering other people’s unkindness must be difficult too; all those bitter, less attractive people, jealous and resentful of your beauty. That’s incredibly unfair of them. After all, beautiful people didn’t ask to be born that way. It’s as unfair to dislike someone because they’re attractive as it is to dislike someone because of a deformity." - Gail Honeyman, EOICF

03/07/2017

"I feel sorry for beautiful people. Beauty, from the moment you possess it, is already slipping away, ephemeral. That must be difficult. Always having to prove that there’s more to you, wanting people to see beneath the surface, to be loved for yourself, and not your stunning body, sparkling eyes or thick, lustrous hair." - Gail Honeyman, EOICF

"At the office, there was that palpable sense of Friday joy, everyone colluding with the lie that somehow the weekend would be amazing and that, next week, work would be different, better. They never learn." - Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphat is Completely Fine
