History Marking The Way | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal 30/12/2019

We've added a little history to the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk. Newly appointed City Historian Ashley Senske spent the past few months working with various groups researching historical photos to place in each of the six kiosks along the trail. The photos give a glance at what you would have seen at each of the locations at some point in history. A brief narrative explains each of the pictures. For more information, see the accompanying The Post-Journal article. For a map of the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk and the kiosk locations, visit http://www.jamestownny.net/departments/parks-and-recreation/parks-and-locations/greater-jamestown-riverwalk/.

Local Archivist Appointed City Historian - City of Jamestown, New York 28/12/2019

Help me in congratulating Ashley Senske, whom I recently appointed as Jamestown City Historian. Ashley has accumulated a wealth of knowledge during her studies to obtain a Master’s Degree in Information Library Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo. For the past several months, Ashley has been organizing and archiving the vast internal records in my office in accordance with state law. Her past experience includes working for several local historical archives, such as the Oliver Archive Center in the Chautauqua Institution, the Robert H. Jackson Center, and currently at the National Comedy Center. We leave the history and future record keeping duties in Ashley's capable hands. For more information, see the accompanying press release from my office.

Local Archivist Appointed City Historian - City of Jamestown, New York Mayor Sam Teresi today (December 28, 2019) announced the appointment of Ashley Senske to serve in the position of City Historian. Smart Meters, Directional Signs To Be Installed | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal 27/12/2019

We're continuing to make Downtown Jamestown more accessible to motorists and pedestrians. Soon, our Department of Public Works Traffic Division will implement the findings of the "Smart Tourism Transportation in Jamestown" report conducted by Bergmann Associates. The work will include installing vehicular, pedestrian, and parking wayfinding signage throughout the Central Business District. This will point motorists to long-term parking and guide them by foot to key destinations downtown, cutting down on traffic and emissions. The program also includes installing approximately 400 "smart" meters that will accept coin, credit card, or mobile app payment. This has all been made possible by a $400,000 Federal Highway Administration Transportation grant administered through the New York State Department of Transportation Alternatives/Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program, as well as $100,000 local match funding from the Gebbie Foundation. For more information, see the accompanying The Post-Journal article.

‘I Had A Crazy Idea’ | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal 23/12/2019

During the past months since we announced the possibility of installing a splash pad in one of our parks, a team of city officials has been researching the question, "where?" The Department of Development, Department of Public Works, and Jamestown Parks, Recreation & Conservation Department have looked at seven or eight park sites to figure out the right location for an initial splash pad project. We recently released their report on the city website http://www.jamestownny.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Splash-Pad-Site-Selection-Report.pdf. For more information, check out the accompanying The Post-Journal article.

Vets Memorial Park | News, Sports, Jobs - Post Journal 19/12/2019

The pavilion in Veterans Memorial Park is complete. The Veterans Memorial Commission, city officials, and I recently cut the ribbon on the new structure. It was a celebration of all the work done in the park the last few years, including a new parking lot and a concrete pathway. This was all made possible by a lengthy and massive fundraising effort by the commission, as well as $100,000 in state funding secured by former state senator Cathy Young. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and persistence in getting this done. For more information, click on the accompanying The Post-Journal article.

We recently celebrated the new handicapped accessible entrance to the Fenton History Center with a ribbon cutting. The construction of the project was funded through the city's Community Development Block Grant ADA Improvement to Public Facilities Program. It included a new snow- and ice-melt concrete ramp with a new boiler system, as well as reconstruction of the porch architecture to match the historical feel of the building. Every year during my 20 years as mayor, I've visited dozens of local companies as part of my Business Tour Program. As my time serving as mayor winds down, I had the opportunity to end this program right where I started my career as a young staffer right out of graduate school 35 years ago. I recently toured Bush Industries with Department of Development Acting Director Crystal Surdyk, Development Coordinator Stephanie Wright, and my Executive Assistant Matt Hanley. This was important to me because the first big project that I had the opportunity to solo on was the establishment of Bush Industries here in the Greater Jamestown Area. In part, the ownership decided to locate the company here because of the financing package we were able to provide at the time. Thank you to President and CEO Mike Evans for taking the time to sit down with us to update us on the future of the company. While I can't go into specifics, Bush Industries has solidified its place in the marketplace through a successful refocus on eCommerce. With a strategy to expand its offerings in that arena, Bush Industries will continue to grow and provide jobs for many career paths, from tech to production. While it has had its challenges through the years, I'm proud that Bush Industries is on firm footing and I wish the owners, management, and employees much success in the years to come.

I recently had the pleasure of signing the first lease extension with the Frewsburg Soccer Club for its use and management of the Allen Park Ice Rink. The extension will allow the club to practice and hold events in the building for the next seven years. Following their time in the building the past year and the amount of resources the club has invested to bring it up to their standards for use, coach and organizer Scott Stone says the organization has fallen in love with the facility. It is great to have such a strong and stable steward for the old ice rink. We recently welcomed the Lutheran Jamestown Gustavus Adolphus Learning Center Accountability and Responsibility Program students to tour the Municipal Building. The students learn leadership and life skills through the program, but also take time to have some fun and learn about their surrounding community. Congratulations to Michelle McCray and her family for recently cutting the ribbon on Dot's Gift Boutique on Third Street. It's Academy Day in the Jamestown Public Schools and I had the chance to spend some time talking with students about their potential career paths. One of the best parts of being mayor over the years is to talk with our young people about their futures and the future of the city. We've enjoyed partnering with the school district and hope we have helped enrich the lives of some of our young people. The students also visited the Police and Fire Departments and a couple of them are looking to serve in those areas. Thank you for including us!

The sign is up to designate the former Chadakoin Park as the newly renamed Jackson-Taylor Park. The city and families of Dr. Isabelle Jackson and Vivian and Lula Taylor unveiled the sign during a recent ceremony near the park entrance at Washington and 13th Streets. The renaming was spearheaded by the local community through a petition presented earlier this year to the City Council. The Council formally changed the name by unanimous resolution at its meeting on September 30, 2019.
