Homes to the Max

I’m Max! This is my place to share the weird, wonderful, and fabulous homes I find on Zillow

Behold! The duplex where time stood still.

The moment I saw that s**g-carpet-covered staircase, and subtle, white-on-white foil wallpaper I knew I was in for a treat.

The living room — with its twin emerald sofas, massive Kinkaide-esque painting, and swirly accent rug — only confirmed these suspicions.

But nothing could’ve possibly prepared me for that glorious powder room. I’m calling it — this is the best bathroom I’ve ever covered. The glossy, kelly green counters and trim; the mirrored cabinet doors and panels; the faucet! There’s no other word to describe it other than perfection.

I don’t even mind the chintz-heavy, 80s facelift of the primary suite upstairs. It adds a fun layer of history to the whole thing.

The listing may claim that this is a new construction, but that isn’t strictly the truth. In fact, this home has been under construction since 1974 — Berkley’s very own Sagrada Familia.

The home is the brain-child of architect, composer, and local eccentric Charles Grove MacDermed Jr, who referred to the home as “a nest cupped aloft to the open air and light, protected by perfect geometry”

Which… Sure. I’m not judging, I’ve gone through architecture school, and written many a pretentious blurb. It’s a thing we do. Perfect geometry and nests aside though, I do think this is an amazing home.

Its most prominent feature is this sculptural, flower shaped roof. Beyond being beautiful, It creates this amazing, light-filled space at the center of the home. And from these original plans, we can see that the space in front of the curved windows was meant to be a conversation pit. Corrections — pits. As in plural. Across two levels.

This home MUST be built. It’s my life’s mission. I’ve just now decided.

Usually when you hear the phrase “two for the price of one” it’s in reference to boxes of Oreos or bunches of cilantro. But in this case, you’re getting TWO Frank Lloyd Wright designed properties all for the low, low price of 4.5 million dollars.

And to sweeten the pot, these are both one-owner, properties. On top of all the usual Frank Lloyd Wright flourishes, There are some gorgeous time-capsuley features like original appliances and bathroom fixtures.

I have a lot of questions about this set up but mainly… Who’s in? There are two homes, two bedrooms each. Let’s assume 1 occupant for room, that’s only 1,125,000 each.

Now, you guys will have to pay for me, buttttt… I’ll be a good roommate I guess?

Regarding my Hiatus:

A few of you have reached out to make sure I’m alright. It’s so, genuinely touching to know you guys missed me!

And Im so sorry for vanishing. My life m suddenly became very busy — in a good way though!

There are some very, very exciting things happening that I’m not fully at liberty to give details about. But, I can tell you that I was pursued by an agency, and that they’re working to get my content out to an even wider audience, and possibly (hopefully) turn this into something more than a weird hobby.

Thank you all for being patient! I hate to negle you all. I’m going to try to keep this up!

The first few images in this listing will lull you into a false sense of security.

But just as you’re thinking “this is a perfectly fine, if slightly boring, mid-70s traditional…” BAM! That kitchen, with its strange, but undeniably successful blend of 70s glamour and French country.

And before you’ve even had a chance to fully recover, you’re confronted with that glorious black and red bathroom. Where to even start? The gold-veined mirrors? The cherry red s**g? The Greco Roman window valence? That tub??

It’s at this point in the listing that things really start picking up, each successive photo bringing new delights like multi-colored s**g, avocado bath fixtures, floral wallpapers, fireplaces and more.

Enjoy scrolling through these photos, they are a delight!

Lady’s and gentlemen of the time-capsule community, I come with good news. I’m here to spread the word about a wonderful land named Edmonton, Alberta — a veritable Palm Springs of the North; A city as of yet untouched by the nefarious influence of Chip and Joana Gaines, where time has stood still, and seemingly every other listing is a pristinely maintained time-capsule. Australia, you’re dead to me. I’m an Edmonton boy now. Go Oilers or something!

It is in this mystical land I found this amazing, 1964 time-capsule. I say this a lot, but at the moment I’m writing this I truly mean it — this is my favorite home I’ve ever found. The second you walk in, you’re greeted with not one, but TWO sets of mid-century room dividers.

To one side, you have a spectacular mid-century living room, complete with angular windows, pendant lamps, and herringbone, wood-paneled walls

To the other, you have what might very well be the coolest kitchen I’ve ever seen, complete with an original harvest brown oven. I could write an entire post about that kitchen island, with its tapered legs, and scalloped edges… but I won’t because that sounds boring.

I hope you enjoy the home as much as I have!

*side note: sorry it’s been so long! I just got finished submitting a very involved application for the duration department of the architecture and design wing of the Art Institute. So, pleas everybody collectively cross your fingers for me because it sounds so amazing. Also if you know anybody at the Art Institute… do me a nepotism 😆

Ok Australians… you’ve got some ‘splaining to do. Why did -none- of you tell me about your country’s freakishly high proportion of time-capsules?! I’ve spent the last few days obsessively scrolling through Australian real-estate websites, accumulating a digital dragon’s hoard of immaculately preserved time-capsules.

This one’s my favorite; a 1970s swinger’s pad frozen in amber, complete with miles of plush orange s**g, undulating wood-paneled walls, an avocado kitchen, and one of the coolest bedrooms I’ve ever seen.

I love every square inch of this house, and could spend paragraphs talking about every little detail from the bricked turret to the loghtolier pendant lamp in the dining nook, but I want to give special attention to that bedroom. It is remarkable, with a circular mattress, custom built-ins, and a mini-fridge that doubles as an auxiliary vanity. And that’s not even mentioning that spindly, built-in lamp behind the bedframe, or that burl wood covered en-suite! Rooms like this are the reason I keep this weird hobby up.

You guys ever hear about objectophilia? I watched a documentary about it years ago — “Married to the Eiffel Tower” — all about people who felt romantic and sexual attraction to structures. It was fascinating, and surprisingly sensitive to its subjects for something made well over a decade ago, but I didn’t quite “get” it…That is until today, when I found this amazing 1970s time-capsule penthouse

It was love at first sight. The s**g carpet; the mirrored bar; the wide variety of reflective wallpapers… long story short, we’re very happy and registered at Bloomingdale’s.

Hey everybody! Remember this gorgeous 1967 Time Capsule home in Westchester, Illinois? Well, I saw it pop up on Estatesales.net, and couldn’t resist paying it a visit in person and I was shocked to find there are ENTIRE ROOMS that were left out of the original listing! I felt like I had just discovered the Caves of Lascaux when I first saw that basement. And now I’m sharing that discovery with you! Now you too can bask in the glory of that basement bar!

Photos from Zillow to the Max's post 12/07/2023

Okay. I’m going to need you all to bear with me on this one.

You’re going to go through the listing photos from this 1930s Rockford, Illinois time-capsule and think “Well it’s a lovely old house — charming even — but a time-capsule? Hardly. Why look at that kitchen! and that 90s wallpaper! That Max has lost his touch!”

To which I would respond 1; Watch your tone, imaginary person I made up! And 2; have I ever mislead you? Would I waste your time?

Of course not. You might have to do a bit of digging to find it, but the vintage is there, and it’s beautiful. For example, the amazing Butler’s pantry. It provides a glimpse to what the original kitchen must’ve been like, with its ceiling-height cabinets and stainless-steel sink basin. Extra points to anyone who can tell me what that metal appliance in there is.

Then there are the five beautiful, original bathrooms. It’s difficult to choose a favorite, but if someone were to hold me at gunpoint I’d probably say the pink pastel bathroom. It has a shake of sink I don’t think I’ve seen before, and I’m a sucker for an archway I’d a bathtub.

All that to say, don’t let the updates krichen fool you; this place is well worth a click.

Today I have for you an introvert’s dream home; a fully operational lighthouse on the rocky, isolated coastline of Oregon, accessible only through a miles-long private road. As if all that wasn’t enough, it even has a cool, gothic-romance-y sounding name; Cleft I’d the Rocks.

And if even THAT isn’t enough to win you over, it has a gloriously 1970s interior, complete with wood paneling, exposed beams, and a surprisingly swinging primary bathroom.

I am so deeply in love with this home. If any local, Oregonian millionaires are interested I would be more than open to a roommates situation. I’ll be the Pattinson to your Dafoe!

This 1974 time-capsule — with its classic mid-century lines and kidney-shaped pool — is one of the most quintessentially SoCal homes I’ve ever encountered… which is why I was shocked to discover it was in fact in Northern California.

Seriously, tell me this wouldn’t fit RIGHT into the Hollywood hills or Laurel Canyon. Oh well. Wherever it is, I very badly want to have a pool party here. That, and I desperately want to scrub those walls with some orange oil.

While this Berwick, Pennsylvania home was built in 1900 and has thankfully retained much of its original character, (front porch, molding, etc.) the interior is definitely a product of the mid-to-late 1960s, with deep green s**g, a myriad of wallpaper patterns, and bathroom carpet throughout.

The kitchen I would date at an earlier vintage — maybe early 1950s? The faux-marble walls, stainless steel counters, acoustic-tile ceiling and many mysterious compartments lend it a vaguely mortuary vibe, but not in a way that I dislike. One coat of cheery — preferably yellow — paint will brighten things up and give it new life.

And I can’t end this post without mentioning the spectacular, raspberry and peach-colored bathroom off the second floor landing. I don’t even mind the carpet, it all just works so perfectly… my only complaint it’s that the ceiling is un-wallpapered.

I’ll be the first to admit it; this 1956 Springfield, Pennsylvania time-capsule is not without its flaws.

You’re going to be scrolling though the first few images wondering why I even bothered posting it. But I’m going to need to trust me on this one. Have I ever lead you astray?

Is the kitchen renovated? Yes. And are most of the rooms empty? Sure. But there are moments of genuine, unhinged brilliance here that will make you forget all that, like the tufted-red leather bar-room with its dramatic contrast drapes, multitude of fish, indoor grill, and psychedelic frieze or the three, foil-wallpaper-covered bathrooms. And that’s to say nothing about the astro-turfed backyard!

Hey everybody! Just wanted to share something fun I'm working on. I have a possibly crazy idea to... maybe start designing a line of housewares based on time-capsules?? I don't know, its very much in the blue-sky phase. Anyyyyyway, I just wanted to share this print I made based on some wallpaper you might remember! More to come hopefully, along with my usual content.

Photos from Zillow to the Max's post 02/07/2023

This 1979 Crete, Illinois time-capsule isn’t the usual type of home I would share.

I remember feeling underwhelmed as I scrolled through the first few images of the listing. The interior was fine enough, and undeniably retro — just not in a way I found particularly compelling or that would just the time and effort it would take to write a post about

Then I saw the basement… And never has my opinion on a home flipped so quickly. Hidden underneath this very average home is a full, vintage bowling alley straight out of my childhood memories, complete with a full bar and billiards room. I can smell and hear every photo with stunning clarity.

Let this be a cautionary tale to all Zillow-hunters; always, ALWAYS scroll to the last image. You never know what you might miss.

In terms of interior design, The 1980s are a very divisive decade. While I’m absolutely a proponent —and to some extent an evangelist — of the style, I’m aware that there are many, even in this group, that have a strong aversion to it.

I am confident, however that this 1980s Springfield Township Time-Capsule could convert even the staunchest of 80s haters.

It is, to put it simply, perfect. The color-palette, the furniture, the use of space… And unlike many of the “cocaine palaces” I’ve posted in this group, this one seems livable — homey even. And I have a genuine admiration for the way they’ve used the space, particularly the sunken living room/wet bar.

There is so much that I love about this 1960 Wilkesboro, North Carolina time-capsule; the slate floor in the entryway; the leaded windows; the fireplace; that gorgeous, sage-y shade of green in the living room; the two generations of vintage appliances; the absurd opulence of the living room;the absurd opulence of the primary bedroom; the way the bed is on a raised, white s**g-covered dais…

Ordinarily, I could spend paragraphs writing about any one of these features. But there’s only one thing I want to talk about — the bathrooms.

They are just remarkable, each a work of art in their own right. The clear star of the show is the “his and her” en-suite off the primary bedroom, half ethereal Grecian palace, and half late-sixties avocado fantasy.

And while I’m not sure how I feel about a wicker toilet as a functional piece of plumbing, I love it as a work of surrealist art.

I have a long relationship with this 1967 Westchester, Illinois time-capsule. I’ve been passing it for years on the way to our family plot, and it’s always stood out to me with its distinctive starburst garage door and it’s obsessively-maintained yew trees.* I’ve always wondered what it was like instead.

Well, yesterday, I was finally able to satisfy my curiosity. When I noticed a “For Sale” sign in the yard I immediately pulled over and plugged the address into Zillow. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you I felt genuine anxiety as the images loaded. What if it didn’t live up to my nearly 20 years of built-up expectations?

Not only did it meet my expectations, but exceed them. The surprisingly luxe living room; the complete suite of coppertone appliances; the cloud wallpaper; THAT BATHROOM!

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

*I should not that what you see in the photos is a much, much more toned-down version than what I grew up with. There used to be some honestly impressive topiary work going on here.

Before I dive into today’s post, I have a quick message for all the Canadians out there. I was already pretty jealous of you guys, what with the healthcare, legal w**d, and polite people. After seeing this 1974 Blue Mountains Ontario time-capsule however, my jealousy has grown to an unprecedented — and frankly intolerable — level.

I have two questions for you. First; how dare you? Second; Which one of you wants to enter into a sham marriage with me so I can gain citizenship?

It would be worth the effort for the immaculately preserved 1970s kitchen alone.

Before we dive into today’s post, let’s all take a moment to get into the right headspace. Sit down, pour yourself a tea, take a few deep breaths — whatever you need to do to prepare yourself for this Museum-quality, 1953 Cresco, Iowa time-capsule.

I wish I had taken those steps before my first viewing. The foyer — with it’s vintage light fixture, starburst door-knob and wavy, and wavy glass room divider — took my breath away;the built-in radio in the living room gave me palpatations; and by the time I reached the photos of the kitchen, I was almost hyperventilating… Then I saw there were no photos of bathrooms, and got mad and swore at my computer.

But before I could get *too* upset, I became distracted by the home’s — shall we say unique? — landscaping choices. I try to keep it positive. I often fail, but I do try. But I can’t not talking about it. While I can’t help but applaud the ambition and audacity it must take to not only plant a dense evergreen forest in the middle of suburbia but build a hilly terrain literally one stone at a time, I can’t stand by the finished product.

This is the emotional roller coaster this house takes you on.

My usual, knee-jerk reaction to seeing a house like this 1898 Newport, New Hampshire time-capsule is to make some lazy joke about it being deeply haunted.

Today though, I’m going to have to work a little harder because I am just not getting a haunted vibe off this house. Or if it is haunted, the ghosts are cool. They may sneak up behind you in the bathroom mirror, but just to tell you that you look nice today, or that there’s a piece of spinach stuck between your teeth.

Even in its current, less-than-perfect condition, this house has a lightness and sense of livability to it rarely found in Victorians (in my experience at least.)

As if I couldn’t love it more than I already did, it also comes with a bonus time-capsule within a time-capsule — an abandoned, 1970s Elk’s Lodge complete with a full bar.

Do you have an affinity for synth-pop? A love for shoulder-passed blazers and the occasional bump of coke? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live inside a Yayoi Kusama exhibit? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, then this Golden Valley time-capsule might be for you!

I… don’t know where to start with this one. I love it so much. I want to meet the absolutely madman responsible for this house, and shake their hand. I can only aspire to this level of unhinged brilliance it takes to cover a fireplace in mirrored panels or lay down that carpet.

The Queens energy coming off this 1960 Flushing, New York time-capsule is off the charts. If you think I mean that as an insult, or am being in any way facetious you would be mistaken. I have such a profound and genuine admiration for these so-called granny chic homes, and can only aspire to the effortless maximalism and fearless design sense of an outer-boroughs octogenarian.

This house is living proof of the efficacy of plastic slip covers. Love them or hate them, they WORK. Those sofas are as pristine as the day they were purchased 63 years.

On the topic of sofas… I’m going to need alllll the information you people can get on that amazing zebra print couch.

This is it you guys — I did it. I found the ultimate time-capsule.

It’s been over a day since I first discovered this 1967 Lockport, New York time-capsule and I’m still in a daze, trapped somewhere between a state of shock and awe.

There are so many ways in which I could describe this home — an unapologetic love letter to camp; a whimsically-upholstered shrine to mid-century glamour; a reminder that more is indeed more; — but instead I’ll keep it simple. This house is perfect.

Obviously, I’m thrilled. This is everything I ever wanted; the culmination of years of hard work trolling through Zillow listings. But now I’m left wondering; What now? I’ve hit my peak. How can I ever hope to surpass this? “And so Max wept seeing he had no more worlds left to conquer…”

Any you can find my Instagram, where Injust finished uploading my full 3d tour of this home here: https://instagram.com/zillownaire_max?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

P.S. There were shockingly few images of the interior, so I took the liberty of taking a few screenshots of the 3d tour. The perspective is a bit wonky, but you get the general idea of the house. Do yourself a favor though, and take the tour yourself.

Hey everybody! Just letting you know today’s post will be slightly layer than usual* but ohhhh myyyyy GOD is it going to be worth the wait. Possibly the coolest house I’ve ever had the pleasure of touring. Here’s a little teaser! For your viewing pleasure, I present the coolest, most surreal basement I’ve ever encountered on Zillow.

* Unfortunately there are very few interior images, but luckily there is a 3d tour! Meaning for the written posts, I have to go in, take some screenshots, and do some minor edits so you can all witness it’s glory.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful — and shockingly attainable homes I’ve ever encountered on Zillow.

It really does have something for everyone; Period details like wainscoting, a grand staircase, original fireplaces, I layer floors mixed with a heavy dose of mid-century kitsch.

So hear me out guys. The home is currently split into three apartments, four if you include the guest-house. Which means if four of us were to pool our resources, we only need to pay 93,750 per person. Who’s in?

I have only one condition for my future roommates; nobody lays a finger on that amazing psychedelic wall-mural. It is precious, and must be protected at all costs.

Also, the pool table stays. On these points I will not budge.

P.S. I had to sneak in some screenshots from the 3d tour because for reasons I cannot comprehend, the original listing photos didn’t show off that incredible foyer

Usually while browsing through these listings, I’m able to conjure up a pretty clear mental image of the owners.

This 1974 Bothell, Washington home however threw me for a loop. Granted, that is in large part due to the lack of furnishings. But what is left behind only further muddled things.

Here’s the clues I have to work with:

- A massive out-building with carpentry supplies and a half finished boat
- A basement room plastered with Star Wars themed wallpaper
- A poster for a Tulip Festival
- A cryptic, too-blurry-to-read note taped to the wall of the dining room

My best bet is a geeky carpenter and with a passion for botany and excellent taste in kitchen appliances.
