57 years ago today: “The More I See You,” the fourth chart single by singer \Chris Montez, made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on April 16, 1966. It was written by composer Harry Warren (whose real name was Salvatore Guaragna) and lyricist Mack Gordon (born Morris Gittler), a songwriting team who primarily wrote songs for motion pictures. They wrote “The More I See You” for the 1945 motion picture “Diamond Horseshoe” starring Betty Grable and Dick Haymes; in the film, Haymes sang the song. Chris Montez’s recording, produced by Herb Alpert on the A&M label, peaked at No. 16 and remained on the chart for 14 weeks. Under Herb Alpert’s direction, Chris had his second hit of the year. After a four-year hiatus, Chris was once again a star — not at all in the Ritchie Valens mold that he had emulated, but re-shaped by Herb Alpert into a suave lounge singer. Gone were Chris’s black jeans, guitar and pompadour hair style. For his debut A&M album, “The More I See You,” Chris was clad in a suit and tie, sported a natty modified Beatle-esque haircut, and was accompanied by three young women smiling approvingly. His fans, old and new, approved as well. And Montez was both surprised and grateful. “I had hits. It was like I was reborn. I told myself, ‘now I get another chance — thank you, Lord,’” he told us for “Where Have All the Pop Stars Gone? Volume 1” (www.editpros.com/WHATPSG_Vol_1.html), available in paperback, ebook and audiobook formats.

58 years ago today: “Some Kinda Fun” by Chris Montez, the follow-up to his first hit single, “Let’s Dance,” made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 8, 1962. Chris and Monogram label owner Jim Lee wrote the song, which was included in Chris’ first album, “Let’s Dance and Have Some Kinda’ Fun!!!” The album, consisting primarily of rock tunes and ballads, also included two songs in Spanish. The single, on the Monogram label, reached No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for nine weeks. The high-energy “Some Kinda Fun” hit No. 10 in England, meanwhile. Montez flew to the United Kingdom in March 1963 to headline on a six-week concert tour with Tommy Roe, the Viscounts and popular British singer Helen Shapiro. There Chris was mobbed by screaming girls, who tore at his clothes, as described in “Where Have All the Pop Stars Gone? Volume 1” (www.editpros.com/WHATPSG_Vol_1.html), available in paperback, ebook and audiobook formats. Lee, who also functioned as Chris’ manager, hired publicist Andrew Loog Oldham, soon to be manager of the Rolling Stones, to handle publicity for Chris during the tour. One of his supporting acts on the tour was an up-and-coming British band that was beginning to build a strong following — a quartet called the Beatles.
